Boots Made for Walking (in jungles & cities)

Hello Xmas Smile

I'm having a nightmare trying to find some waterproof, comfortable, sensible boots that I can wear for my upcoming travels.

I'll be taking in cities and going on safari walks and jungle trekks. I'll be wearing a mixture of yoga style trousers, comfortable lounge trousers and shorts/dresses. What on earth should I put on my feet?

Boots seem the most sensible but I could also get some sort of casual trainer for the less treacherous walks. Has anyone seen any nice boots that fit my criteria?

Thank you Flowers

I think I wore Timberland leather boots on safari. You really need to ensure your legs are well covered to avoid insect bites and in rough grass. Merrell or Salomon trainers might be good for travel and city. Zip off lightweight walking trousers might be a good investment - they're breathable and dry quickly.

They look so perfect for safari! The walking trouser I've found so far are just so ugly but they would be sensible, must keep looking!

Those timberland boots will be as hot as hell and I may be wrong but I've always thought timberland were more of a fashion brand, not sure how water proof they would be.

Do you need boots? I went on safari and wore birkenstocks. Grin. Enclosed toe ones mind.

If you do think you need boots (and I guess it depends on the safari) fabric boots with a goretex lining may be good. I have asolo ones which are good.

Yes similar to those. Or goretex boots.

This sort of thing for general travel and sightseeing

My asolo are like these, so trekking shoe rather than boot. www.asolo.com/en/products/lifestyle/escape/shiver-gv-woman-passion.html

I also have some Merrell trekking sandals which are very comfy.

You can get waterproof walking trainers which are supportive and sturdy but not as heavy or hot as walking boots. I got mine from Cotswolds I think. You could try other outdoor stores as well. I think John Lewis stock a few as well. Check out North Face and similar brands. Some styles actually look ok as well unless you have big feet and have to buy men's like I did Sad

The Scarpa Mojito is what I wore last trip - needed to look ok in a city and be comfortable and robust enough to do a good trek in mixed terrain.

Good point about the heaviness, also got to think about packing them as i'll only have a backpack (really going for the traveller look) so the lighter and smaller the better. Combining the two makes much more sense doesn't it, a waterproof walking trainer for every occasion.

Why do they all have to be so wild though? Bright pinks and greens, crazy patterns and cut outs. What's wrong with a plain black waterproof walking trainer?!

Agree, these kind of boots

I think you just have to accept the walking trousers are ugly, but you might find something a bit less ugly at Prana

PossumInAPearTree · 14/12/2016 21:56

black and brown waterproof gtx shoes

NameChange30 · 14/12/2016 21:59

Cotswold have plenty - search results

I like these Haglofs (plain black) or these Berghaus ones (mostly black with a tiny bit of purple).

If you are doing a walking holiday please get proper walking boots from a walking shop, not any kind of fashion shop even Timberlands. In that kind of situation you will look like a twit in street boots regardless of how fashionable. I guess you're spending thousands on your travels, don't skimp on footwear and limp round for weeks.

I don't much like zip off trousers but I'd go for some lightweight stretch khaki's or capris. Gear for Girls are good for Prana and other brands that realise women aren't just short versions of men. e.g. like these. If you phone up they are so helpful.
stylish and practical travel stuff

Shoes you should try on, Cotswold Outdoor will have every season, every climate and should be able to advise you on the right thing for your activities. Salomon Ellipse are a lightweight boot that comes in a trainer version as well if there's not too much up and down.

I'd get Keen/Teva/Merrell sandals for cities/beaches/evenings. They aren't all clumpy and garish.

ps I've got gear envy and trip envy now - have a great time!
