Refunds for earrings?

I've also posted this in Arts& Crafts....

What is the law / policy now on refunds for earrings ( for pierced ears.) For ages they were non returnable but I can't see anything on John Lewis website excluding them from refunds.

I'm asking as a fledgling seller- silver jewellery- and wondering what customers would want and accept.

Not sure of the law but I've never bought earrings from anywhere which did allow a refund, for hygiene earrings. It usually says that in the receipt. I wouldn't want to buy earrings that may have been in someone else's pierced ears to be honest

PurpleDaisies · 12/12/2016 08:37

I've worked in jewellers before. No refunds for earrings or other jewellery for piercings (except if faulty). As a customer I totally agree with that.

Tessticklesyourfancy · 12/12/2016 08:40

Earrings are usually non returnable unless faulty. You would need to make this clear and most people wouldn't have issue with that. Just make your policy clear and polite.

PollyPerky · 12/12/2016 08:42

Thanks- that's what I thought and put on my website.
I'm just surprised that an established seller on Folksy offers refunds for earrings so wanted to check it out.

I have taken earrings back to John Lewis but they hadn't bee worn.

PurpleDaisies · 12/12/2016 08:52

That's usually irrelevant jiggly-you can't tell by looking whether a pair of earrings has been worn or not.

coffeecakemum · 12/12/2016 11:40

When I ordered some earrings online from Goldsmiths they sent in a tamper proof packaging. It's plastic see though one, so you can see the earring but if you open and try them on then they won't take it back. I think it helps to have this option as I can't gauge the colour or size from the online pictures sometimes.

JigglyTuff · 12/12/2016 13:07

You could with these - they were in a jewellery box and you could see if they had been removed from the box

PurpleDaisies · 12/12/2016 13:10

That might have been useful to mention. Smile

The only reason earrings can't be exchanged usually is if they've been worn. This is obviously a new gadget to allow internet shoppers to look at them without having to buy them. I've never come across them before.

alltouchedout · 12/12/2016 13:19

I absolutely do not expect earrings to be returnable and totally agree with no return policies. However, this does mean i hardly buy earrings, as I seem to have earlobes that are apparently allergic to just about every metal in existence (I may possibly not be allergic to platinum but don't have the funds to find out). And I love earrings, so this makes me sad.

PollyPerky · 12/12/2016 16:47

I'm going to stay with my no refunds policy but I'm still wondering why...? J Lewis website says nothing about not refunding.

It came into practice in the 80s when there was the HIV scare and bloodborne risks. I don't know if the regulations have been relaxed.

Anyone- just curious.

polly if you read further up the thread earrings from John Lewis are now sent out in a sealed box so they are only refunded if the box is unopened.

Fuzzypeggy · 12/12/2016 16:50

Regulation or not, I think it's just a bit grim to think that your earrings may have been in someone else's piercings. Those piercings could be scabby, infecting and oozing or just not very clean. Totally unhygienic and I bet joh Lewis receipt will say no return even if the website doesn't

Mbear · 12/12/2016 16:51

Not sure how the distance selling act would impact on this? It might be why you can't find anything on their website?

Fuzzypeggy · 12/12/2016 16:51

X post, aah I see re John Lewis

JigglyTuff · 12/12/2016 17:24

Sorry, was on my phone earlier!

Polly - I would send them out in clear crystalline bags with a paper sticker over the closure (and maybe some handwriting in gold pen or something?).

Then it would be absolutely impossible for anyone to open the bag without you knowing but at a reasonable cost to you.

I have to say that I don't fancy wearing earrings someone else has worn - there's a risk of infection, even if it isn't HIV

FireAndStrife · 12/12/2016 17:39

I got a a refund from House of Fraser for an online purchase of Links of London earrings.

When they arrived they looked nothing like the picture on their website.

Angelicnorth · 22/04/2021 13:50

Hello, the rules are different if you are selling on line (Distance Selling Regulations), you can see the item if you buy it in a shop, you can not online, you have 14 days to cancel and return your item regardless of what it is or the reason.
