Do you buy during the sales or do you buy when you want to?

Some say buying full price when they want to saves them money because they don't buy a lot of stuff just because they're on sale.

What about you? What works?

Sales all the way as the full price stuff is usually more than I can afford.

I do buy the odd full price thing though when they do those 20% off days.

Actually I think of the full price as 20% extra to the real price now, they do them so often.

OneNightTimeMenaceStrikesBack · 10/12/2016 22:45

depends how much i want something and whether or not i'd be happy to wait for it and risk not being able to get it.

If i really really want something and think it's likely it will sell out either at full price or sale price, ill pay the full price for it. If somethings more of a passing fancy then ill be happy to wait in case it goes on sale.

I buy essentials at full price though as those are things I need rather than things i just like the look of

IhatchedaSnorlax · 10/12/2016 22:51

I hate shopping so only buy when necessary, which usually means missing the sales altogether unfortunately.

SeaweedSa1ad · 10/12/2016 23:16

Generally buy at full price, although at this time of year I'm going to wait (either for discount days or the proper sale after Christmas).

Usually if I like something and can afford it, I'll buy it for fear of it selling out and missing my chance.

BabooshkaKate · 11/12/2016 00:23

I find sales hugely stressful. Usually I think if I want it, I don't want to risk not getting it in my size in the sales. I also hate the crowds and the heat and pushing and shoving and having to make a decision there and then.

I also don't buy huge amounts of stuff. So this year I bought a trench coat for full price at £200. I went in a few times to try it on over 2 weeks and then bought it. If I had waited a few months I would have saved £20 in a flash sale. If I waited for post Christmas sales I wouldn't have got it in the colour I wanted because it had sold out. I expect this coat to last me at least 5 years so I won't be buying a new one in that time.

RebelandaStunner · 11/12/2016 00:26

Both.
Full price for items that are cheap enough anyway, I avoid the sales in these clothes shops as they are like a jumble sale. Also for things that are a perfect fit/colour etc and that I've been looking for, for ages.
I usually do have a selective little look in the sales and have found a few gems occasionally, but you have to be much more ruthless as you are more likely to end up with mistakes.

mumgointhroughtorture · 11/12/2016 00:32

Both , If its an everyday sale , great bargain and I will opt for the product on sale over the full price yet during Christmas sales etc I try to avoid like the plague. I would rather pay full price than stand in a queue for half an hour to save a few quid. Queues and loads of people stress me out too much.

I've done all my Christmas shopping . I'm avoiding shopping centres now in the run up to Christmas .

chanie44 · 11/12/2016 08:09

I've embraced the kondo principal of buying what 'sparks joy' so my purchases are considered and I rarely regret what I do buy. I will always look for a code if I can, but sometimes, it's not possible, as the item may be low in stock.

My most recent purchase was a top. I'd popped into the store to try it on with a view to waiting until the Xmas sales. When I got to the store, it was 20% off, so I bought it.

maggiethemagpie · 11/12/2016 08:27

I've been known before to buy an item at full price, then seeing it go into the sale a few weeks later so buying the item again on sale but taking back the new item on the old receipt to get the difference. Best of both worlds!

chanie44 · 11/12/2016 08:32

^ I do that too!!

MsUnderstanding · 11/12/2016 08:51

If it's something I need then I just buy it. If it's something I want but don't need another one of, I might stalk it online and buy in the sale but often find I don't want it anymore.

TeaAddict235 · 11/12/2016 14:36

I try and wait for the sales for most things, especially for my DC. I think that lots of clothes are overpriced and under quality for me to pay the full price. Also there is too great a profit margin on many synthetic items.

CointreauVersial · 11/12/2016 15:23

I buy most things online. If I come across something I really like (or need), I'll buy it, even at full price. If it's a "maybe" or a bit pricy I might bookmark it for purchase in the sales.

BUT I'm much more likely to be browsing clothing websites when I hear there's a sale or offer on. So it follows that the majority of my purchases are reduced price.

In a way, I respect places like Next who never have offers - they just do a massive flog-off sale a couple of times a year. So if I see something in Next I will tend to buy it there and then, because that's the only way you can guarantee you'll get it. Whereas with (say) M&S or Debenhams I will think "oh, there'll be a 20% offer along soon", and I wait.

29redshoes · 11/12/2016 16:46

Unless it's something I really like or need I usually stalk it online until it's in the sale or there's a discount code.

Pistachiois50pmore · 11/12/2016 16:48

I have started using the online wishlist thing to keep track of things I like - then you can check back when the sale starts and see what gets reduced. Handy if you like doing a Whistles shop on your phone under the table at the in-laws on Christmas Eve.

bluechina · 11/12/2016 18:44

I tend to buy in the sales or on discount sites/outlets. I could afford to pay full price, but there are so many other things I'd rather be spending money on, and I don't see most clothes as being 'worth' their full price value when you know it's likely to be much cheaper if you wait a while.

I can't think of any time I've really needed to buy clothes for anything in the past few years - I have pretty much all occasions and situations covered, so I'm only shopping when I need a bit of a treat or to stock up on certain items if there's a good deal. I'm quite good at resisting the urge too often though, and looking forward to seeing my savings build up instead.

Newbrummie · 11/12/2016 19:10

Always in the sales. Even if you miss something one year the store usually does something similar next year or it pops up on eBay

gillybeanz · 11/12/2016 19:44

I just buy what I need when it's needed, and wants are bought when reduced.
same for all the family really, although, I do buy some needs at xmas time along with wants to bulk up the presents a bit.
