The perfect stylish yet practical winter dog-walking coat

I have up to £250 to spend. I always hankered after a Barbour wax coat, but that's no good as they can only be sponge cleaned. I'll be wearing it on muddy dog walks, so I'd like the option of sticking it in the washing machine! I'll be wearing it every day over the winter and I'd like it to last a few years ideally.

I currently have a Jack Wolfskin padded quilted coat, but it's not very flattering and a bit too 'practical' and ugly. I want to look fairly stylish ... Usually I look like a scruffy blobby mess on dog walks.

I like the Seasalt coats, but would like to look at some others as well.

Must-haves include:
A hood (but not a hood that makes that annoying swishy noise as you walk ... does such a thing exist??)
Waterproof and fairly warm, but not overly warm as I get hotter on longer walks - so, more than a mac, but not quite an Arctic coat.

Nice to haves:
Cover my bum, but above my knees.
A nice shape, maybe with a belt or cinched waist- not square/boxy.
I love the yellows/oranges of Seasalt coats, but not very practical for dog walks. Something other than black would be nice though.
Needs to look ok with jeggings and wellies, but also with nice jeans and boots.
Lots of pockets to hold poobags, treats, keys and phone.

I'm a squidgy size 14... maybe nearer to a 16 but not quite. 5ft 3in.

Thanks!

Anything Lands End? Most of their coats come in petite and choice of colours. I really appreciate having sleeves the right length and a neat fit.

Also Go Outdoors are starting to stock more "urban" outdoor gear. e.g. this comes in red and grey.

splash the cash?

On the point of the Seasalt coats, I've just bought the Janelle having seen it recommended on here. I'm keeping it because it is waterproof, warm, a good length and cheap. However, it's ugly as sin and doesn't fit properly, by which I mean it is the right size, but the construction is very peculiar. It sort of sits on the back of my shoulders so I'm constantly hitching it forward and most of the fabric is in the back so it balloons. Also, the zips don't do up - I can only assume they're meant to be decorative, but really Hmm ? I tried it on in the shop and got a sort of shruggy smiling response from the staff about it. Confused

I was glad of it when standing on a cold, wet station platform at 6am the other morning but did think to myself later the same day when I spotted someone wearing the same coat (in red, mine is black) "yep, ugly coat, it's not just me" . Grin

Thank you - that North Face coat is very nice.

And thanks for the warning about Seasalt: duly noted!

I have this & it's very warm, showerproof & practical.

It's a mustard colour on the inside & the inside of the hood.

I bought a parka from Tu in sainsburys. It was either £40 or £45. I use it for dog walking . It's got a hood and a thing to tighten around the waist. I have had expensive jackets in the past and still use my old Barbour when I'm dealing with the cattle, but this Tu parka is great. I also have a sea salt raincoat but don't wear that when dog walking . I bought it on sale half price. I'm a 12.

Didrikson, waterproof, windproof, warm, big unswishy hood, multiple huge pockets for every eventuality!

Mine is khaki/olive and was about £170 I wear it all the time, it also has internal tie/pull things to cinch in the waist as much or as little as you want.

Thanks everyone.

Oooo those didrikson coats are lovely!

DS and I are doing battle over a Merrell duffle coat we bought a few years ago. It's warm and waterproof and we both luff it. I think there's almost certainly something similar in the shops; about £75, but DH bought it for DS so don't rely on that.
