Curls that don't look fried

How do you do it? I have just below chin length hair. It used to be lovely and thick but over the last couple of years it's thinned out drastically, especially at the front.

I thought curling it slightly might help disguise the baldness but it seems that no matter what heat defence spray or styling products I use, it just looks dull, frizzy and wispy.

Any advice or tips please on how to try to make me feel a bit more confident with this horrible hair?

Most of those styling products use silicones to control the frizz, which build up over time leaving hair lifeless and lank.

If your hair has thinned out drastically I would strongly recommend that you stop using any form of heat to style it (hairdryer, curling tongs, straighteners).

I stopped using silicone products and stopped drying/straightening my hair around four years ago as it was getting thinner and thinner and the difference is amazing!

If you want to try this you need to do one last really thorough wash with a normal shampoo (containing SLS, which most do) to remove the silicone build up and then after that start using shampoo/conditioner that do not contain harsh ingredients such as SLS, parabens, and avoid products with silicones. You should find that after a few months your hair is naturally in much better condition.

Try washing at night and using mousse and a wide toothed comb. Go to bed with it wet and don't use any heat on it.

I already use sls free shampoo and usually leave it to air dry. I just fancied some curls as an occasional look whilst it's party season.

The thinning has been gradual. Originally my ferritin levels were low so I've taken supplements regularly for years. apart from a few tufts of regrowth early on, it's got gradually thinner so it looks like age related female pattern baldness. I've seen a trichologist and a dermatologist when it started and they both thought that correcting the iron store deficiency would help. It hasn't.

You could try an infra red hairdryer?

How would I curl it though?

With a round heat retaining brush while you dried it? Or use a couple of Velcro curlers a la Vera duckworth!

I've started using olaplex three which is like a weekly deep conditioning treatment, once a week over night and then use a lot less as a leave in conditioner. Curls are really defined and not frizzy. I'm hoping it'll stop any breakage too in the longer term
