Tipping your hairdresser

I'm confused about what's the norm, if there is such a thing, around tipping hairdressers in the UK. I've always done it and give about 10% of the cost of my bill. (I have a cut & blow dry in a salon every 6-8 weeks.) A conversation with colleagues recently revealed that some never tip. What do you do? If you're a hairdresser, what do you expect and how much variety in practice is there? I'm about to move to a different salon and don't want to get this wrong! Thanks

I always try and tip my hairdresser, if I have cash on me. Usually £10 for a £150 cut and colour, she is the salon owner, but I know she shares the tips with the assistant.

I also tip my manicurist, waxer and in restaurants, bars and taxis. I thought everyone did.

Having discovered that a blow dry added over £15 to the cost of a "cut and blow dry" (Shock) I now only ever have a 'wet cut'. I always try to make sure I have 10% of the cost in cash as a tip.

For those who pay £120-£150 every 6-8 weeks for a colour (and cut) I now feel happy with my decision to go grey gracefully Grin.

Tip at Xmas

You decided not to tip from now on op? Why?

It's interesting there isn't a consensus. I always tip my hairdresser. Usually give £5 (on a £55 cut and blow dry) to the receptionist to put in his pot. I never know whether it's the done thing - is it enough, is it generally appropriate for a senior stylist etc? I will also give £2 if someone different washes my hair. On the basis of this thread i'll continue.

To the PP who tip postmen - how do you actually do this? And the bin men? What's the etiquette?

Comedyusername - I'm also curious as to how you tip your postman/bin crew at Christmas? I'm never around when they call.

I pay £90 and tip an extra £10-15

Expensive salons don't pay staff more than cheap places.

Think I'm leaning to no tipping because I find it awkward, & I feel I'm paying quite a lot & regularly, & not convinced there's a need to. There's clearly no consensus.
