Can I wear this dress (pic attached) to Black Tie dinner?

Hi all,

I'm going to this uber-posh black tie dinner in a few days and sadly the long dress I was planning to wear I have changed shape for (too baggy around the waist now).

I have very little time as work is manic and no money to buy a new one. I do however have this 1950s off-shoulder gold cocktail/mid-calf-length dress: www.etsy.com/uk/listing/287075175/1950s-dress-vintage-50s-dress-gold-lurex

If I wore nude shoes and bag and deep red lips, pearl studs etc. to play the gold down, would this work? It is off shoulder.

It is the second most special dress I own and actually still fits me!

I don't quite have enough time to get it taken in. And I'm in the UK - but I have the exact same dress (not the one in the listing). Thanks all - your tips and help most gratefully received! Will probably wear hair up but really cash poor until payday this month so should do it myself!

It is stunning. What a gorgeous dress. Of course you should wear it!

CaraAspen · 21/11/2016 13:28

But don't do your hair in a "period" style. That would be too much.

polyhymnia · 21/11/2016 15:27

I think it's lovely. But would wear with quite low key subtle accessories as you suggest yourself, not in a 'period drama dress' type way.

burnishedsilver · 21/11/2016 15:40

It's beautiful. Wear it and have a great night.

FrickOnAStick · 21/11/2016 15:46

It's more original than the usual acres of dull Coast sateen.

Joinourclub · 21/11/2016 19:02

Love it! Definitely wear it.

hooliodancer · 21/11/2016 20:16

God, that's gorgeous! Perfect for black tie.
How come it seems to say it is vintage 50s, implying original? Or have I missed something?

Whatever, you will look the best there. I think black tie these days means glamorous, and that certainly is very glam!

RingOfFire79 · 23/11/2016 23:30

Thanks all! Sorry for late reply - yes it is vintage, originally made in the 1950s but looking pretty good despite its age!

God you can wear ANYTHING at black tie provided it has minimal fastenings so that it's easy to take off quickly when you've copped off at the end of the night.

[happy memories]

[remembers is a respectable married mother these days]

Lovely dress. Enjoy.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 23/11/2016 23:38

Skip the 50's hair, lovely dress!

DameSquashalot · 23/11/2016 23:44

I think I love the dress, but would need to see it on a person. The black tie dos that I go to tend to be strict for men, but woman can wear anything.

Maybe I don't go to posh parties..

mydietstartsmonday · 23/11/2016 23:44

Absolutely go for it

RingOfFire79 · 24/11/2016 14:51

Have taken a decision and will wear the gold dress; currently being steam cleaned at the dry cleaner's now. Thank you all so much for the help and for the kind words :) :)

I was looking for black tie ideas so this has been a helpful thread of What Not To Wear! I hope you have a lovely evening in your dress.
