I went shopping all day today to find something to wear to my
Christmas party which will be a dinner & band in a smart hotel.
After hours of traipsing round I still have nothing!

I think it's my age, 41, i just don't know what to wear or which shops to buy from. Alot of the shops i like ie Warehouse, Oasis suddenly feel too young for me so I tried Phase Eight & Monsoon amongst others & they felt too old.

My body shape doesn't help as I'm 5'3 so most dresses were too long. I'm a size 12 but with a bit of a tum so things fit well on my shoulders but then are a bit tight round the middle. If I go up a size they are too big on shoulders!

I've been looking on line tonight but am just going round in circles.

I'd be grateful for any advice or examples of what other people are wearing.

I'm wearing this with a below knee leather pencil skirt. It's quite sparkly in real life.

angiekk · 21/11/2016 11:16

Nothing to add , other than I feel your pain :0( . Don't even feel like going . Top it off had an op on my foot in the summer , it didn't work so well. None of my heels fit me now and I have yet to find a nice small heeled , party shoe :0(

travailtotravel · 21/11/2016 11:23

Jeans. Christmas jumper. Thems our rules apparently as everyone has it already and they want to equalise things after last year. Don't ask about last year. I don't own a Christmas jumper. Am thinking of wearing regular jumper and pinnings Bauble to it. Can you detect my abundance of festive cheer?

Coast Dress

This...I love it. Coast dresses are always lovely, albeit expensive sometimes.

Thisismynewname123 · 21/11/2016 13:23

I just got this. Very flattering ruching hides the tummy

I feel your pain. I am in the same predicament so watching this with interest for ideas. Although (at the risk of outing myself) our Xmas do theme is 'Masquerade Ball'. Oh joy of joys, so now I need to find not only a dress but some kind of mask. Was thinking this, but suspect I may get accused of not taking the evening seriously Grin!

I'm wearing this coast dress, with ridiculously sparkly shoes and accessories. I was very tempted by a diamante mask, as we too have a masquerade ball theme, but I restrained myself as I already have a perfectly good mask for the 5 minutes I'll actually keep it on. The dress is very subtle compared to what a lot of the others are wearing - think floor length prom style, but I wanted something that wouldn't languish in the wardrobe.

www.hobbs.co.uk/product/display?productid=0216-5212-1926L00&productvarid=0216-5212-1926L00-BLACK-12. However, I've ordered it online and have not tried it on yet! It seems to keep going out of stock, so is obviously quite popular...

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 21/11/2016 17:05

Love that, Morag.

I'll wear either a black velvet mini dress with black opaques and either heels or heeled ankle boots, or a black tube skirt and black cami, with a little sparkly cape thing over it. Not decided yet.

Sleepthief · 21/11/2016 17:29

It's definitely not your age. I'm 42 and will either wear

Or
m.zara.com/uk/en/woman/dresses/crossover-velvet-dress-c269185p3997005.html

And plenty of glitter

Thank you for all the replies,I'm going to have a proper look at them all tonight.

bustergonad i really like the look of the Oasis Popcorn dress. I was just looking on ebay and this actual dress came up for sale, New without Tags, price £22.95!
When I looked further the seller had sold a few of them already and has loads of other lovely dresses for sale from great brands. I felt a bit suspicious but on looking at her reviews she has 100% and lots of positive comments. Just wondering how she would manage to sell this dress at half the price it is in the shop currently - is it a bargain or should I steer clear?

I'm wearing this dress to one and this top with black trousers to the other.

Not very exciting but they are both flattering and a bit sparkly.

Floisme · 21/11/2016 18:19

I'm closer to 70 than I am to 40 and our Christmas do looks quite low key compared to some: a modestly swanky meal and late bar. Anyway I'll be channeling my current style crush, Katharine Hepburn and wearing grey velvet wideleg trousers with either a silk shirt or a Whistles sparkly knitted top plus fake fur collar (that's if I go for the Whistles top) and silver-grey brogues.

For what it's worth, the only outfits I'm ever able to recall after a Christmas do are the wildly OTT ones.

Bananajam · 21/11/2016 18:30

Black frill sleeve dress and the black dipped hem skirt from Next for a 30th party next week and our Christmas party - I'm 46 and tried on a lot of outfits, I'm 5'6 with large boobs and a bit if a belly, size 12 mostly. These arrived end if last week thankfully as I was just about to give up.

metoo22 · 21/11/2016 18:34

I'm 54, planning to wear this in green
Great Plains Firenze
But it hasn't arrived yet. If its too flimsy I'll have to rethink. I wanted to steer away from black and thought I could also wear it on Xmas day with thick tights.

metoo22 · 21/11/2016 18:35

PS your outfit sounds fab Floisme

Loving the mask Pookiek😂

I'm wearing these with a black, ruched Outnet mini dress and peep toe heeled boots.

With plenty of glitter and false eyelashes, I'm going trashy!

Nice Carrie.
Although I like Megan's too....

gingerh4ir · 21/11/2016 19:42

new look skinnies and a top. I am always ShockShock by the sheer fuzz that is created about clothes to wear for the x-mas do.

Trickymoments · 21/11/2016 20:07

I hate the fuss too & the expectation. Because ours is in a posh hotel you feel like it's expected to dress up to the nines, I think they even put a dress code on the invite. I haven't got the time or money to devote to this but short of turning up in some posh undies I have to get something to wear!

Any thoughts on my post earlier about buying the Oasis dress from ebay at half the current shop price. Seems too good to be true??

Drinks with the school mums: HM white long sleeve lace top, Gap black cigarette pants, Clarks black suede shoe boots.

Meal out with work colleagues: Hobbs black jumper with star on the front, M&S A line leather skirt, opaques, Biden animal print heels.

Jmangel · 21/11/2016 20:23

Oh bloody hell sleepthief, that 2nd Zara velvet dress is just about to break my not buying anything new for Xmas rule! How could you?!
