When do you decide to go grey?

Is it when you cannot keep up with the dye/re-growth race? When you peer at your roots and think " I only did these two weeks ago and look, I'm silver" Shock

Or when you think "Hmm, it doesn't actually suit me now, dye looks fake". I don't think my hair remembers its real colour, it'll be interesting at least to see what happens......

Or (which I'm hoping is the right reason) you get your haircut with the intention (honest) of dyeing it but think "Actually, I look quite good"

My hair is short (think Long Pixie) cropped at the back/sides and maybe 2" on the top. Had it cut 4 weeks ago and I was going to henna before we went on holiday but I just CBA.

So, I'm planning to have another crop in a couple of weeks, and see how it looks. If it all looks dreadful, I have some Emergency Henna (but I don't want the risk of orange highlights so that'll be if I really don't like my natural hues)

One of my most stylish friends is 80 and her once dark brown hair is now a lovely shade of blonde , slightly ashy / golden without looking like D Trump and that's how I want mine when I'm 80.

That's fine if she wants it that colour, but nobody is going to be fooled into thinking it is not dyed or that she is much younger because her hair hasn't gone grey.

"but I think if you're naturally pale you have to be very careful when considering growing out grey."

Same for me. I never wear pale clothes next to my skin as I have no contrast - look washed out.

DamePlata · 23/11/2016 23:52

Yeh i avoid pale colours too.
black is supposed to be the no no but for me, beige, whitr, pale blue.... i look awful in them

ImBrian · 24/11/2016 08:20

Here's mine, I'm concerned what the dark mixed with grey on my parting will look like though as I'm only 'white' around my face. I wish it was all the colour that it is at my temples!

I've never dyed the grey hairs but admittedly I'm very lucky as they're coming through silvery and I really like them. I don't care about looking my age - I care about looking good and my hair does.

I don't suit a lot of pale colours either but my greys are just the right shade, which makes sense, I suppose, as it's my own colouring.

I like the mix at your parting Brian - it makes it look interesting.

Another trim, a fresh surge of grey ........ I'm getting there.

I need to spike or gel I think to give texture, maybe a matte putty or wax or something.

I'm inspired to wear make-up now (not for work though, CBA with that)

I'm 54 and the only grey I have is at the front in one part so if it don't dye it I look like Cruella Deville.

Keeptrudging · 04/12/2016 00:17

I'm still dyeing regularly, no idea what's under it but seems to be increasingly grey. How can I find out without letting it grow out? Is it possible to have all the dye stripped out at a hairdressers then dyed again that day if I don't like it? It's fear of the unknown which puts me off going natural.

My hair's dark, so there's no 'going subtly grey' happening! Am off to investigate the W7 powder someone mentioned.

Cocolepew · 04/12/2016 00:24

You can get your hair stripped but it won't show your natural colour. You hair will look lighter becauae even dark dyes have lighner in it (or something).
When I stripped mine after dyeing to too dark once the colour it went was a fetching orange.

Keeptrudging · 04/12/2016 00:36

Ha, thanks for the warning! Maybe not then Grin

PickAChew · 04/12/2016 00:43

The best thing is to just have s good look at your roots!

BradleyPooper · 04/12/2016 00:59

I am about 80% white and used to have naturally dark chocolate brown hair. I moved to a new country 3 years ago, stopped dyeing, stripped out what I could of the old dyed stuff and cut my hair short. I was 41 and found it incredibly ageing. I bought new makeup etc but couldn't get to grips with it, it just was't for me. I didn't feel like those glamorous grey haired ladies on the web, so many people look great with it but I just felt I didn't. I dyed it back and will continue to do so for the time being.

Keeptrudging · 04/12/2016 01:07

That's what puts me off. Without wanting to sound vain, I look a lot younger than my real age, most people are shocked when they find out the ages of my children. I don't generally wear make-up, I've got good skin, very few wrinkles etc. If I went grey, I'd worry that it would be instantly very aging for me when I'm getting away with aging slower than I should be (so far).

ceeveebee · 04/12/2016 01:16

I had dark brown hair with almost 100% white on top. I decided to take the plunge and go grey only yesterday. Here are the photos of the 7 hour transformation process - I'm very happy with the result!

ceeveebee · 04/12/2016 01:18

In case it's not obvious - the dark brown with white roots was before, the blonde us after bleaching and the grey is the end result!

Keeptrudging · 04/12/2016 01:28

The one on the middle is a lovely colour, it is nice and warm rather than the 'steely grey' I think I'll be. I've never had light hair, have dark eyebrows and a lot of freckles. I don't seem to see people with freckles and grey hair (but I'm sure they exist)! I've got a redhead complexion, my hair was auburn (although i dye it warm brown now as auburn seems to look worse/go too red as it fades).

BradleyPooper · 04/12/2016 06:25

Keeptrudging, same here. I have good skin with very few lines and was shocked to see an old lady in the mirror. I came to the conclusion that it was either my problem and I just could get my head round grey hair or it jus doesn't suit everyone at the same time. I have found a fabulous dye that's not blocky or harmful and I'll keep on with that until I decide to give grey another try.

BradleyPooper · 04/12/2016 06:27

Ceevee you look fabulous, funky hair with rock chick eyes, for some reason I can't get that that look!

allegretto · 04/12/2016 07:55

Can I ask when most people go grey? I am 43 and have probably 4 grey hairs - when will I be mostly grey? (I know impossible question but maybe someone has an idea!)

SilverHighlights · 04/12/2016 08:37

I started going grey when I was 22, I'm almost 35 now.

I have dyed my hair quite a bit for fun colour changes during my 20s, but last permanent dye was 4 years ago and I don't intend to dye it ever again. My username is apt, and the sparkly silvers through the front & sides are pretty. I actually want more!

AllPizzasGreatAndSmall · 04/12/2016 08:48

Is it possible to have all the dye stripped out at a hairdressers then dyed again that day if I don't like it?

If it was that easy nobody would stress about growing it out!

Cocolepew · 04/12/2016 10:48

Looks great Cee Star
