Leggings/tunic combo on little girls - what do you think?

I have got a top from boden for dd1 (this one ) which didn't look good with jeans, but I thought it would look nice with leggings/sandals in the summer. she has a few of last years dresses too that would look cute with leggings.

But I really don't like little girls looking like miniature teenagers - would this look like that, or just cute? what do you think? (dd1 is 6 btw).

Also maybe nice with cropped trousers?

Aloha · 14/02/2007 12:01

Well my 2year old has been given a lovely blue floral tunic and blue leggings from Monsoon, which is beautiful. I think it would look nice an dbe comfortable. My stepdaughter wore leggings I bought for her (usually striped or floral) at that age all the time, little children have worn them for donkeys years

Not really answering your question, sorry.

Enid · 14/02/2007 12:02

dd1 and dd3 have a similar outfit. dd1 (7) wears hers with cropped jeans and funky tights. dd3 (8 months) with leggings.

I think they both look gorge

paddingtonbear1 · 14/02/2007 12:04

I love the top pollyanna, it's really pretty. I think it would look ok with either leggings or cropped trousers, and summer sandals.

RustyBear · 14/02/2007 12:06

Actually I have always thought that leggings with anything were only suitable for little girls - even in 1989 when I was the only mum at toddler group who didn't wear them.
But I wear shirts open over t-shirts, so what do I know.....

Enid · 14/02/2007 12:07

dd1 (7) has a 15 year old friend whom she idolises so constantly wants to dress like a mini teenager

I rather love that layered grungy look taht teenage girls seem to be wearing atm though

pollyanna · 14/02/2007 12:08

I'll give it a go!

She is very skinny so cropped trousers don't always suit her. Then again, her legs might look like little threads in leggings too

Enid, I really like the look in teenagers too, but don't want dd1 to grow up too quickly. But you're right, I think it will look really good.

I felt a bit funny about it but have given in and bought a set for dd from marks - if marks are doing it then it must be okay.

twelveyeargap · 14/02/2007 12:25

DD is 11 and wears skirts and dresses with thick "footless tights" rather than leggings.

I think the thinner fabric of tights, particularly if the hem is trimmed with lace as some of hers are, makes it look "older".

Thicker leggings suit younger girls IMO and are less "teenagery".

RosaLuxembourg · 14/02/2007 14:11

twelveyeargap - where do you get the footless tights for your DD. My 9-year-old DD would love some but I can't find any small enough for her - age 13 are the smallest I have found and they swamped her and anyway were too thin and got laddered on the second wear.

scorpio1 · 14/02/2007 15:50

what about these?

two pack of leggins starting age 3-16?

thought that top was lovely, nice with leggings

twelveyeargap · 14/02/2007 16:11

Rosa, I got a couple of pairs (with lace trim) in Tammy Girl in BHS. They're sold like leggings (ie not in the socks section), but are very thin fabric. I'm sure I saw some for kids as young as 7. They also had "untrimmed" versions.

They also sold some in the "tights" section and I think my mum got her some in H&M.

RosaLuxembourg · 14/02/2007 17:32

Those are great Scorpio, just what I was looking for. I never thought of Tammy 12yeargap, I should have looked in there. Unfortunately our nearest H&M is an hour's drive away.

Ilove too-short dresses and skirts on little girls. I think they're far more prasctical than 'standard' lengths, and tights/leggings ensure modesty. I don't htik it makes them look like teenageers - moe like little skaters!

GrumpyOldHorsewoman · 14/02/2007 17:48

According to one of my many books on etiquette/style it states that the correct length of hemline for little girls is a couple of inches above the knee (dates from about the 1950's)

I love little short dresses and skirts on LOs - they look very sweet. In fact, I think they look more like mini-adults in longer lengths. I fully intend do dress mine in the smock/leggings combo this year. It looks lovely

twelveyeargap · 14/02/2007 20:45

Tell me about your etiquette books Grumpy. I just bought some but was rather disappointed with the "modern" ones. I like the old style "milk before or after the tea" type stuff.

I am waiting for Debrett's to arrive from Amazon at the moment.

GrumpyOldHorsewoman · 15/02/2007 10:32

i have a book which is a re-print of one from, I think, the 1930's. It is called 'How To Be The Perfect Hostess' or 'The Perfect Hostess Handbook' (Can't remember which, and I am at work at the moment so can't check). I bought it a couple of years ago from Past Times and it is quite amusing! I have another called 'What Every Woman Should Know About Style' which is a modern guide to clothing etiquette and bought from Amazon. Amazon have quite a few good ones, including re-printed books originally sold years ago. I bought another 'Social Etiquette' one for my Mum, a 1950's Parisian one, and she loves it. Can't remember the name, though.

twelveyeargap · 15/02/2007 11:23

Ahhh. I love kind of thing. Debrett's just arrived and answered my question on another thread about whether fascinators were acceptable at a wedding where the invitation had stipulated, "Ladies' head dress prefferred.".

According to Debrett's, dress should never be mentioned on the invitation, therefore I have to assume that the family know nothing of etiquette and will have no idea either.

twelveyeargap · 15/02/2007 11:24

Gagh! Spelling mistakes...

princessmel · 15/02/2007 11:27

I think it looks cute and funky and not at all grown-up.

My dd wears leggings and I love her in them. So comfy and no trousers dragging in the rain and mud. Fab!

Marina · 15/02/2007 11:28

I think it looks good too. And dd adores leggings because they are easy to pull on and off. Gymboree do lovely plain stretchy velour ones if you can bear doing mail order from the US.
