Struggling with winter jeans shapes

Argh.

I'm over skinnies.

I can't make myself like those shitty wideleg cropped frayed things that make even the models look completely square and like their cat has died.

So I bought some straight leg Levi 714s. Which were fine rolled up a bit in summer, but look totally shit in winter.

So now what? Am I missing something with the widelegs that will make them look half decent?

I miss my jeans. It's like having my lower half out of action :(

Slim boot cut? They're big at the moment.
But I just carry on with my turnups through the winter and wear lovely socks pulled up! Not a look that everyone will like I know!

That's a bit like what the 714s are. I just feel a bit dated with boots underneath them.

I've really got into wearing trainers and brogues lately, and I can't make jeans work with them. I feel like an 80s male teacher doing 'smart casual'.

I'm with you Yvaine. I've tried turnups with big socks and I feel like a member of Dexys Midnight Runners. I've kind of given up and am wearing straight leg jeans over ankle boots - as long as the boots aren't mum boots I think it looks ok. I read a tip somewhere that it looks better if you buy jeans that are way too long so you can roll them but still have them full length. But I'm tall so that's not going to work for me.

I've tried rolling them up so they're still full length, but I have legs like a pit pony so they just look even stumpier.

What boots would be acceptable? I've been wearing Fly Mols, but they look like mum boots when you cover the leg bit up.

Straightleg over boots works but all straight legs are not created equal IME.
I tuck skinnies into calf or knee length boots in winter- it gives the effect of a wider leg silhouette iyswim. I've never got on with bootleg- a slight flare works better for anyone with anything more than a very slim upper leg I think I'll shut up now I'm rambling

I'm a bit fat for skinnies at the moment. I'm working on it, but my usual skinnies into boots winter uniform is very uncomfortable for the time being, and I refuse to give up on myself and go up a size.

What would be a good boot shape to wear straight legs over, mavens?

I find a funky coloured/textured/stitched Chelsea boot looks good over straights if you don't want to go too high heel wise. You need a pointier toe than a mum boot for interest. I got some JL copper ones last year which look great.

Ooh, I can't do heels at all.

I like the idea of a Chelsea boot, though.

I'm struggling too... I'm back to skinnier with boots but really bored. Is anyone wearing proper flares? I wore them a bit in the summer with wedges... not sure if I will just look very out of date with winter coat etc

I don't bloody know and it's driving me mad. Bought some straight legs but they don't look right and I don't know if it's because I'm so used to skinnies now that anything else just looks / feels odd or if they really don't look right.

I found an old pair of black bootcuts the other day in the cupboard and tried them on - my god they are so flattering - but I'm at a loss with what to wear with them, can't remember what I used to wear with them either.

God I used to wear bootcuts with bloody everything! Heels for nights out, Converse for casual, ankle boots and court shoes for work - I can't imagine wearing them now but I know that makes me behind the times! I'm still wedded to skinnies, I'm afraid, and I think most of us who were late teens/early twenties when bootcuts were last considered stylish will struggle to dust them off again any time soon...

OP, I wish I knew the answer. 8' still wearing skinnies with Chelsea ankle boots and sometimes a turn-up, if I can get away with it. I'd like to try some Levi's Curve (I think?) but never get to bloody Selfridges. I have some oldish Gap skinnies that are more like a straight leg and they look good with the ankle boots. I think they key to rocking a straight leg is a high waist and maybe a bit of a distressed wash - it's all in the wash!

Fly Mols don't look like mum boots to me. Mum boots are kind of non-descript and quite plain, usually black with a little bit of shine and a neat little heel - like this

But actually, I think you can even get away with a mum boot if you wear them with some skinnies - for the full 'mum' look you have to pair the mum boots with some too-short and flappy boot cut jeans... and a fleece if you really want to go for it.
