I think the trick to walking in heels is to walk normally. I know that sounds weird, but you need to walk like you would in trainers, heels down first, normal strides. I see people teetering like they are nervous about actually putting weight on their heel, whereas I find the best thing is to act like the heel is not there and just go for it.

Having a few drinks first always help

I don't walk in high heels. I teeter like a knock-kneed drag queen.

God bless the Doc Marten.

practise - wear them round the house between now and the weekend and you'll get the hang.

agree walking heels-first is important but you do have to take shorter steps else a thin heel can scoot out from under you and you land on your bum.

Heels are just part of the whole "elegant" theme - so, pull your shoulders back, stick your chest out, feel like you are being pulled up from a string in the middle of the top of your head - if you pull this off the occasional wobble on unfamiliar heels won't be noticed.

Then swing your leg from the hip and put one foot (more or less - don't be fanatical) in front of the other. - and yes, agree with KezzaG - let your weight go down on your heels! Don't try and walk too quickly.

Make sure you don't have to do a big traipse across town in them!!! You will be needing proper transport, of course.

Have a lovely evening.

I can't since I snapped ligaments attaching my right foot to its ankle. Bloody painful. Highest I can manage these days is a measly 2 inches. And to think I used to totter about in 4 inches plus. Irony is - I wasn't even wearing high heels when I had my accident!

I've reached the age of 46 without mastering high heels.... until this year!!! I'm up to 4 inches now. My secret was to buy ones that are a perfect fit, with a cross over ankle strap to stop them slopping around. And don't start with a thin stiletto... I went for a slightly chunkier heel.

Interesting comment from you experts about putting the heel down first. I was worried about snapping.

I practiced around the house, starting with 10 mins and building up to a couple of hours. I then graduated to the supermarket at a quiet time, using the trolley to hang on to and perfecting gliding round corners.
