How well is this scar likely to heal (with picture of scar)

I have a lot of moles, some of which stick out. A few years ago I had several removed and they were just shaved off leaving just tiny white scars no bigger than the original moles.

Recently I went to the GP to get all my moles checked and I asked about getting a couple more removed and they refused as it was essentially cosmetic. Fair enough. So I went to a private skin clinic and they said they could remove all except for two which they said looked irregular and I should go back to my GP about.

So my GP removed one of my irregular moles and I've been left with this scar. It's about an inch long and much, much redder than it looks in the photo. I had the mole removed about 3 months ago now. I rub bio oil on it twice a day.

Is it likely to get much better?

Hopefully the redness will reduce to light pink or white over time. I can't say for sure, though.

You need to use silicone scar sheets for six weeks to keep the scar flat. Then wait a year for it to mature and seek the advice of a plastic surgeon.

Thanks. Also is it unusual to be left with a scar this big after having a not enormous mole removed? Previously I've been left with a scar no bigger than the mole was.

If a mole is removed because it is "irregular" a larger margin will be taken than if it was for purely cosmetic reasons- if it did turn out to be cancerous they'd want to make sure they'd got it all.

What taybert says - they will have removed a larger margin of skin, hence the bigger scar. I find it depends who does the surgery as to how it scars. I have one on my breast that is frankly a pig's ear - still red after over a year, and puckered slightly, where it was stitched too tightly, and one on my face that is less than six months old and barely noticeable. I also have a large one on my back (which was a melanoma), which is flat and white and doesn't notice that much.

I would keep rubbing in the bio oil (or vaseline - it's the massaging rather than what you rub into it that helps) and see how it looks in 9 months. It looks quite lumpy - I had stitches in one of mine that were supposed to dissolve and didn't - my scar was lumpy like yours, and two stitches worked their way to the surface about two months after the surgery. I pulled them out with tweezers, and it flattened quite quickly thereafter.

I think your scar will look better with time. Mine has. Mine was very red, but it isn't red any longer. My accident happened in April and I have used this daily on my face between lip and nose - and it really is much better.

I had a mole removed on my back, she cut in very deep and took a huge flap of skin out. My scar is pretty big and quite 'rustic' looking. It's like a comedy scar complete with needle and thread marks. Yours is positively minuscule compared! I think mine was so big because she was worried it was cancerous, just give your scar tlc, rub in vitamin E oil or whatever skin oil you have to hand, maybe buy a scar healing plaster and keep it out of the sun.

It should do - it's only 3 months.
Bio oil and no sun or sun beds help, as well as how well you are in yourself.

You need silicone plasters! The work very well.

It looks a bit lumpy in the photo, so might have a bit of hypertrophic scarring going on. I had great results using kelocote gel, plus was prescribed haelen tape
