A suit for court please

I have to take a case to the civil courts for the first time in a while. I am an experienced solicitor (i.e. No longer young!) but usually disputes in my field settle early....

Black suit? Whistles?

Plain suit. Will you wear it again any time soon? Is there really any point in spending much money on it?

Debenhams do nice suits in different price ranges. I tend to pick up my court suits there (from when I was a Detective and now that I work for a prosecuting authority).

Alternatively, a nice Monsoon dress (I love their sales) with a plain jacket and heels works too.

Lovelyideas · 22/10/2016 22:13

No I will not wear it again so resent the cost. Thanks for suggesting Debenhams.
Could I get away with a phase 8 dress and jacket?

Definitely. Phase 8 is usually really lovely. If you already have those, I'd just run with that.

Lovelyideas · 22/10/2016 22:17

Grey patterned dress that I have and new black jacket then?

Sounds perfect to me! I'm a slob most of the time, but scrub up like a new penny for court. Good luck with the case!

gallicgirl · 22/10/2016 22:24

I have some reasonable suits from M&S for court. However a sober coloured dress and jacket would be fine too.

Lovelyideas · 22/10/2016 22:47

Thanks, do you think abstract monochrome pattern on the dress is ok?

Definitely, you should have seen what my ex's barrister turned up in, she looked mother of the bride with thick black opaque tights and boots 🙄

Lovelyideas · 23/10/2016 11:53

Yikes!

I got a great suit in t k max for about £50

Suzietwo · 23/10/2016 18:20

I don't wear suits to court and attend 3-4 times a month. Shift dress and jacket or anything tbh

MissBeehiving · 23/10/2016 19:35

I'm a solicitor and would agree with suzietwo.

Gwenhwyfar · 23/10/2016 21:27

"thick black opaque tights and boots"

What's so wrong with that? It's what I wore with my suit the other day. Otherwise I would have had to wear heels and be uncomfortable all day.

Pisssssedofff · 23/10/2016 21:28

Didn't go with the dress

Mooey89 · 23/10/2016 21:30

I'm a social worker which I know is a bit different court role wise but I normally wear a black shift dress and then a black unstructured jacket with black tights.

Conservative business wear is how I've seen it described!!

Lexilooo · 23/10/2016 21:35

Are you doing your own advocacy? If so a skirt or dress suit in black, navy, or dark grey. If you are sitting behind counsel you can be less conservative so a trouser suit or dress and jacket would be OK, as would suits in less conservative colours.

Lovelyideas · 24/10/2016 21:29

Own advocacy so am coming back towards black.
I popped in today to observe - a solicitors' gown is an option too I guess...

if it doesn't settle I guess it will be handy for funerals...

OP posts:
Lovelyideas · 24/10/2016 21:35

Though with the gown you need the funny collar...

gallicgirl · 25/10/2016 13:58

Tabs!

The gowns and tabs cost a fortune so you would be better buying new suit.
