I need help. Makeup overhaul.

As the title says. I need to ditch my makeup collection of old odds and ends, and invest in some grown up make up. I need to completely start again. So, can anyone recommend some must have products? I've looked all over, and so many are recommended that I really need a concise list. I'm such an idiot, I don't know where to start. I'm light skinned and blue eyed. Please help?!

Chanel for my makeup base and Dior for eyeshadow and lipstick. I still rate cheap mascara- Rimmel is brilliant!

Try to work out if you're cool toned or warm toned - look at whether you suit gold (warm) vs silver(cool) or whether your veins are more bluey/purple (cool) vs green (warm)

This has quite a bit impact in whether foundation looks nicely groomed or tango tess, and the counter girls sometimes get it very wrong! I'm very pale and cool and I've had way too many oompa loompa moments!!

If you've got dark under eyes I'd look at a colour corrector - probably a peach toned one. I've got a good palette from Stila (available on Beauty Bay) which has several shades, other good ones are this by Urban decay in peach and Becca do one too. You'll also want a good concealer for afterwards, best I've found for pale skin are Nars Radiant Creamy (I use Vanilla) and Urban Decay Naked Concealer.

Blusher I think is really important to get right for a polished look, especially if you're pale as once you add foundation you can easily go to full on ghost mode. Nars tend to do some nice ones ( I like Desire), as do MAC who have a great shade range.

Foundation - it doesn't sound like you need very heavy coverage, although if you are wearing it for work you'll need it to last fairly well. Without going to mega heavy coverage one of my favourite foundations is Lancome Tient Idole 24hr, comes in a good range of shades and lasts very well without being heavy, and seems to be good for lots of skin tones. I'd also recommend getting a good setting spray - like Urban Decay all nighter - to help keep your make up in place as nothing looks less polished than your makeup skidding down your face by mid afternoon!

Eyeshadows - I probably would look at a Naked palette as they're great for a glossy look. I don't have the new matte one but I have the others (yes all of them, oops). I'd say Naked 1 if you are warm toned, Naked 2 if you are cool toned - Naked 3 is rose golds, beautiful but more subtle bridal, and the Smokey palette is lovely but a bit heavier. Another lovely option (online only) is the Anastasia Beverley Hills Modern Renaissance palette. It looks like some interesting colours but it's incredibly flattering and easy to apply.

You want a good mascara which doesn't budge...I like Estee Lauder Doublewear, MAC False Lash and the new Clinique variable one (name escapes me but you can click the lid to get different intensities).

Eyeliner - the easiest liquid eyeliners I've found are Clinique Pretty Easy and Urban Decay Razor Sharp.

Lipsticks - really personal choice, matte lipsticks are quite popular just now. MAC do a great range, but I'm really keen on the new Urban Decay Vice range of lipsticks.

I wouldn't worry too much about contouring and highlighting initially, it's something you can add in later as you get more confident.

I swear by Chanel for foundation - apply in the morning and it lasts all day and makes my skin look luminous. I also use Chanel mascara and blush and if I buy another brand mascara like YSL I always use the Chanel applicator as it gives me a really natural finish.

SoggyWetFlannel · 22/10/2016 20:56

Ok, I've had a look online, I'm definitely a Cool tone rather than warm.

This might be a silly question, are powder or creme eyeshadows better? I've seen lots of pallets with both types in, but creme seems very 90s to me.

And blush, powder or cream? Or, does that depend entirely on your skin?

StatisticallyChallenged · 22/10/2016 21:15

I prefer powders as they are easier to blend - which is the most important thing if you are trying to do a good smokey eyed look. You also need a couple of good brushes for this - Real Techniques are probably the best easily available high street options although for not much more money Zoeva (available online) are brilliant and very soft so help with blending.

I actually tend to go for powder blushes too, I can never get the creams to look quite right.

Another foundation option - for a not too heavy finish - is Urban Decay Naked Skin. The shades numbers ending in .5 are cool tones. YSL do some cool pale options (shades denoted as BRxx), as do MAC who confusingly call them NW just to be awkward. NARS do some nice light and cool tones too, as do Hourglass (more pricey but lovely) who also do fabulous powder (I use the Ambient Strobe Powder in Iridescent) which I dust over my foundation.

RaingodswithZippos · 22/10/2016 21:18

Chanel Les Beiges range is lovely - it smells gorgeous and I find a little goes a long way.

I don't buy primer but I use Nivea post shave balm under my foundation and it stays on all day.

Benefit Rollerlash mascara is the best I have found.

Collection 2000 waterproof liquid eyeliner is also brilliant value.

BusterGonad · 23/10/2016 05:07

Remus when you get a chance dust it over one half of your face, look in the mirror and you will be amazed at how lifted your face appears. It is amazing at brightening your complexion!!! Honestly as a blusher it's blah....as a brightening powder it's the bomb! Lol

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 23/10/2016 12:31

I'll try it, Buster. I love it as a blusher though - am deathly pale so it works well on me.

BagelGoesWalking · 23/10/2016 17:11

Very helpful thread although my DD was scandalised when I mentioned Nars and Benefit. Far too expensive apparently and I should make do with brands in Superdrug!

She did put on a Lisa Eldridge tutorial for makeup for mature skin that was interesting (although the woman was fabulous looking anyway and not a dark eye bag in sight, even bare faced!)

SoggyWetFlannel · 23/10/2016 17:50

I have such an amazing list of products to look at now, thank you all. I had a mini session with a lady at the benefit counter today which was interesting. I will fully admit to falling in love with the dandelion powder box. There is still 1000 other things I need to get. I really appreciate all of your help and suggestions!

Remus If you are happy to use it as a blush that is great, just try it once brushed all over one side of your face and slightly under and over eyes. It's like a face lift in a box. Let me know what you think. I love it as a brightening and lifting powder.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 23/10/2016 18:58

I like the idea of using it under eyes.

BagelGoesWalking · 23/10/2016 22:37

Presumably you'd need to put on the Dandelion over foundation or concealer, rather than on a bare face?

BusterGonad · 24/10/2016 04:07

I wear Dandelion after all my other make up as you would a finishing powder, that's how I was taught to use it. It lifts your whole face and makes you look perky and healthy. Don't fear the pink as it's very very light and I personally cannot see it on me as pink and I am ivory of skin!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 24/10/2016 09:29

Agree that it lifts the whole face. It's just lovely. Definitely pink on me though! I tried a bit under my eyes today but it didn't seem to do much, if anything. Will try again tomorrow and maybe be a bit heavier-handed!

BusterGonad · 24/10/2016 09:37

Remus lightly does it, put some on your brush, gently tab your brush on the side of a table etc to get excess off then apply gently to the face. Very very lightly under eyes as not to enhance lines and dryness. It's just dreamy!

itsbetterthanabox · 24/10/2016 09:52

Which Chanel foundation are people recommending?

itsbetterthanabox · 24/10/2016 09:53

Also benefit say dandelion can be used as either a finishing powder or as blusher Wink

BusterGonad · 24/10/2016 10:28

Isitbetterthanabox that is true and I apologize for my mistake, when it came out I worked for Benefit and I was told it was a finishing powder and to sell it as such. Halloween Smile

Kabex · 24/10/2016 13:17

Chanel foundation I had liquid to powder but it felt really heavy on my skin so I bought Vitalumiere Aqua and I love that but my mum swears by CC Cream

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 24/10/2016 16:26

Re under eyes - do you use the brush that comes with Dandelion, or another one? Dp keeps telling me how 'well' I look with it on my cheeks. Grin

notagiraffe · 24/10/2016 16:37

For a natural but polished look, I go for Rimmel eye shadow in the four colours palette as others always seem to dry out ages before they've run out. Also Rimmel eyebrow mascara in blonde. Maybelline Xtreme lash mascara and a neutral lip colour from Bourgeois or Chanel. which I also use as blusher. Still never found a decent foundation for pale dry skin taht doesn't make me look like the walking dead or an orange.

BusterGonad · 24/10/2016 16:51

Remus you need a face powder brush or a fluffy blusher brush if you are using it all over. Real Techniques are the best for the money. You are liking the new Dandelion application I guess?
