Invisalign - do you have to get the white lumpy bits?

Hi, had my consultation about getting Invisalign. Was really excited and booked my first 1 hour appointment for mounds, photos etc next week. But then they told me I have to get the white tooth coloured lumps put all over my teeth and when I looked at photos on the Internet of others with them, I'm shocked!

I thought it was just the clear gum shields, and it would be discreet, now I'm thinking maybe this is not for me.

Anyone had it and can share their experience? Or photos?

I think there's different versions. I believe if there's very little movement needed then the clear gum shield type things are required; if more movement then the white train tracks. Do they not offer the brackets behind your teeth? I've seen that before.

(This is all just from internet stuff btw I had regular train tracks as a teen and have idly looked into some additional straightening as an adult)

I did and it was ok (don't have photos because it was yonks ago).

The lumps did do a good job. They push the teeth with more oomph.

I've seen friends and colleagues with them (worked in the States) and didn't really notice until after I had them myself. Since then I zero-in on them.

Just be aware that you need some kind of retainer afterwards to keep your teeth in place.

I have a wire behind my teeth. No one else knows it's there, but I do.

Is six-month-smile not an option?

With hindsight (since had DCs and am less vain) I might have gone for the cheaper/more visible braces.

They are lumps underneath the clear gum shield felicia, I narrowed it down to Invisalign after lots of research but now I'm Thinking aaah people will ask what's that on your teeth?

So you HAVE to have them on under the gum shields?

From recent experience of lingual brace, it was behind teeth so invisible, followed by lifelong wire behind teeth. Maybe that's what you are thinking of?

You only have to get them if your teeth need quite significant movement

You may want to have a second opinion from an orthodontist (if your Invisalign practitioner is a cosmetic dentist rather than an orthodontist).

If you have to have attachments bonded on to your teeth you loose the primary benefit of invisalign (which is invisibility). You may find having a ceramic fitted brace with a white wire will give you better results and be quicker.

If you are having teeth bonded material anyway, you may as well just do it properly if that will give you a better result. I would be seeking a second opinion.

Yes that's exactly right autumnleaf the benefit is invisibility, if you take that away, maybe the tooth coloured braces make more sense?

It depends if you only have to have the white lumps for say a month and only on a couple of teeth, then maybe it won't be so bad. But you don't know the quantity until you have paid the first £500 lump.

After some more research it seems everyone has these 'buttons' and they will be on the whole time.

Anyone had any experience with Invisalign, any regrets?

Do has them and you can barely see the lumps.......the change in his teeth has been remarkable and he is so chuffed with them. He is 14 and hasn't been self conscious at all.

I had the 'bumps' with my invisalign....looks fine with the brace on...does maybe look a bit funny without brace on...but i kept brace on All the time.
Best money i have EVER spent. Big difference.

I'm doing invisilign at the moment, have the lumps and honestly no one has ever noticed them. They don't really notice the braces either. I'm really glad I did it.

May I ask how long you have had the Invisalign on for? Is it ever possible to get them on for less than a year?

I've got Invisalign and the 'Bumps' and honestly, they are tiny! You really can't notice them! No one has ever noticed mine, they are always shocked when I tell them i have a brace and only notice the attachments (bumps!) when I point them out. It's really no big deal. Invisalign is the best thing ever.

I'm just so worried about people staring at my mouth and thinking they are bits of food!

Tomorrow I have my first proper Invisalign appointment. I'm assuming they do the moods, X-rays etc. There is a deal with £500 off so I could get the Invisalign full for £3500.

Do I just do it because it's a good deal and I am conscious of my teeth anyway so may as well be conscious of the bumps. Or wait a month or so and pay full price??? I can't make a decision!

Hi Mrsstumbletap. I am just about to finish with clear braces (different brand from Invisalign, but exactly the same thing) and I didn't have the white bumps. I stated at the outset that I really didn't want them if it could possibly be avoided and they said ok! I would imagine it depends very much on your individual case, but worth asking. I had moderate crowding on my upper teeth & moderate to severe on my lower. I've had them since June & my teeth are completely straight. I don't know what the results would have been like with the bumps but I can't imagine how it could be any quicker/better. As I say though, maybe it was just possible because of the type of crowding I had. Good luck!

May I ask what brand i didn't know anybody else did them apart from Invisalign, do you have before and after pics?

Yes, it was June this year. The brand is Clear Smile. I was originally told approx 8 months but things seemed to have moved more quickly. I have an appointment next week & he said that might be it, or there will be just another few trays (max 6 weeks) so hope to be done by xmas. My main problem on upper teeth was the 2 teeth on either side of 2 front teeth were moving behind the front teeth, if that makes sense. I was told it would only get worse so decided to go for it. To be honest I wasn't really bothered about bottom teeth (although they were probably worse) but was told they had to do lower ones at the same time. Might have got it wrong about the severity of crowding on lower, but was definitely moderate. My one regret was not taking photos as things have progressed but I'm going to ask the dentist if he can email me the before pics when I finish treatment (they take lots before you start).

I went for Invisalign after doing a bit of research and going to an orthodontist and cosmetic dentist. I wouldn't worry about the bumps on the teeth, I had a few and as they're near enough the same colour as your teeth, they're not too visible. Mine were on for just over the year and I'm delighted with the results. I decided on Invisalign mainly because you can take them out for a few hours if you have a night out or special occasion. I was also advised that the white braces stain easily.

My DH has Invisalign and bumps for just under a year, last year. Money very well spent. He had awful teeth and no one knew about the Invisalign unless we told them.
He found them mostly painless, easy to use (I.e. On/off for meals) etc..
He has a wire on back of teeth now and he is so happy with his teeth.
