Do you pay full price for clothing?

It occured to me that I very very rarely pay full price for clothes/shoes these days. Most of the major retailers seem to be forever having 20% off weekends... that makes me think the 'full' price is just the price they think they can get for the item plus 20%.

Then there are sales every five minutes... in the old days there was a sale in January and one in summer, now there are mid season sales, end of season sales, spring spectacular, autumn spectacular... I don't think more than 6 weeks goes by without a sale.

And lots of places eg white stuff, boden, do the 20% off vouchers

Just wondering if anyone actually pays the full price any more? Or is the full price just there to lull us into a sense of being savvy when we get the chance to pay 20% off?

It's all a big con really isn't it!

I'd go for the boots keep, provided you can still return the mac and get your money back. Ime sensible buys are the things hanging in your closet unworn rather than something that makes you happy to wear over and over again just for the sheer joy of the item (which is worth more to me and therefore worth spending on).

Nearlyadoctor · 14/10/2016 17:41

Definitely the boots!

Nanasueathome · 14/10/2016 17:43

I work in the principle that I will only pay the full price if it is something I cannot live without
Since there is really nothing in this category then I will only pay 50%
It has always worked for me
I have clothes in my basket at John Lewis and only buy them when there's a discount

hiccupgirl · 14/10/2016 19:14

I now only buy most things with a discount code. If there's something I desperately want that is popular then I will consider paying full price but tbh there is very little that I would need like that. I have plenty to wear so anything I buy now is really just because I like it rather than I need it.

I avoid sales generally as I hate the chaos and I end up buying rubbish.

Lanaorana1 · 14/10/2016 19:39

Never. I have expensive taste and live in cashmere etc fromTK Maxx's contemp designer bit (not as gharrrstly as it sounds). Theory or Vince, but I'm buggered if I'm paying 400 quid a crack from Harvery Nicks when I get it in TK for 50 by walking up the road.

Honourable exception: primark. Am wearing blissful cotton granny pants, lovely and baggy, 50p a pair.

FeliciaJollygoodfellow · 14/10/2016 19:46

I generally buy stuff online and use codes for free delivery. I don't buy stuff in the sales because it's normally the shit stuff no one wants.

usernumber007 · 14/10/2016 19:48

I only pay full price for Tesco, George and primary because they are already cheap enough and you can't guarantee that the item you want will end up in the sale. Never pay full price for anything else.

Ragwort · 14/10/2016 19:48

I only buy from charity shops so no, I never pay full price for anything. I used to work in the fashion industry - it is a huge, huge con. Sad

SillySongsWithLarry · 14/10/2016 19:52

I buy things full price but buy good quality and don't buy often. I don't like ploughing through the sale rail it's messy and frustrating.

MsUnderstanding · 14/10/2016 19:52

I find stuff I like sells out in my size.

woodhill · 14/10/2016 19:53

I tend to buy in sales but last year I wanted some Boots from John Lewis for Christmas. I think they were discounted eventually but I wanted them and I really like them and they were from dh.

Recently I bought a plain top that had nearly sold out at full price - really like it.

Judydreamsofhorses · 14/10/2016 20:00

I don't enjoy sale shopping but always look for a voucher code. I also have an NUS card - I'm a lecturer and it is a real perk - so get 10% off in quite a lot of places as standard.

The only shop I always pay full price in is Primark. I buy a load from charity shops, the occasional thing from TK MAXX, a bunch from actual sales and if there's anything I want that's not on sale then I google for a voucher code or swoop in a blue cross sale.

I've sometimes had a duff purchase in the sales but normally I get great stuff, and I find it easier to find insrpiration that way than sifting through the infinite selection of the full price options.

OCSockOrphanage · 14/10/2016 20:37

I buy most of my clothes towards the end of the season on sale, once I have decided where I need to fill a wardrobe gap, but very occasionally I will see something I love so much I buy it at full retail; those are the ones that end up being huge bargains because they get so much wear, over a year or five. There are not many of them because usually I wear jeans, jumpers and t-shirts. But shown a perfect dress up blouse, at a good price, that works for me, I might buy it knowing that I won't wear it more than twice a year, but I will wear it for 10 years.

SilverHawk · 14/10/2016 21:07

I have enough clothes. If something really catches my eye, I will play the long game.. If it's gone, it's gone.
For example, I really liked a COS dress. It was in the sale. I was lucky this time. Quite often, thing that I like do sell out but it doesn't matter.

SallyR0se · 14/10/2016 21:14

I don't even look at the full priced stock. Sale only! And TK Maxx. And charity shops. And outlet centres. The Brand Store has just opened near me!

beardedladydragon · 14/10/2016 21:34

Never. I buy literally all of my clothes from a shop called New Life. It is a seconds/end of line charity shop. I recently got a Patagonia Ultralite jacket for £10 (rrp £180). My jeans are all very expensive brands (citizens of humanity, Levi, Gant, whistles) but I pay on average £5 per pair. We are very lucky to have one in our town so I go in regularly to get the best bargains. It means though that I can never justify buying full price!

SallyR0se · 14/10/2016 23:22

bld, I like the sound of that place! One of the big charity shops near me has recently had a massive haul of ex-department store stock. Top brands like Whistles, Hobbs etc... All new. At low prices. The type of thing worn-once shops would charge a fortune for. I also like buying "older" clothes as everything made recently is absolute rubbish!

theclick · 14/10/2016 23:27

Rarely - love a bargain. I always hunt it down. I'll wait to get something if it means getting a decent percentage off

SallyR0se · 14/10/2016 23:34

My most recent purchase was a new (labels on) pair of Adolfo Domiguez black trousers. 90p! I'll be wearing those with my Monsoon black velvet tux jacket, 10 quid.

SallyR0se · 14/10/2016 23:36

Dominguez, obvs...

JaceLancs · 14/10/2016 23:52

I very rarely buy unless in some kind of sale or discount offer
For example I need a new black cashmere cardigan - at some point before Xmas I will either find one I like in tkmaxx or jaeger outlet will have one or M & S will do a 20% off offer
I will wait.....
