Do all shoes hurt past a certain age?

mumonahottinroof · 12/10/2016 21:14

Just ordered a pair of LK Bennett block heels with 25% off. I love them, but they bleeding pinch around the front of my toes, so they're going back. I am SURE 15 years ago I would have borne the pain for beauty's sake.

So do a) shoes hurt more as you get older or b) Does your tolerance for discomfort vanish? I could try to wear these in but I can't be bothered any more and if it doesn't work that's £200 down the drain.

Am 45, am I doomed to a lifetime of Hotter and M&S Footglove?

GIrlwhowearsglasses I am so, so sorry. I meant no offence.

I am willing to bet you don't wear them like that - if you do I am obviously a fashion ignoramus who knows nothing about style. Which is pretty much what my DDs hint at most days.

mumonahottinroof · 13/10/2016 10:35

feet lose their padding as you age (typical losing weight from the one place that doesn't show!!)

liiiinoo no worries!
I mostly wear them with opaque tights. I find the gold colour goes with black outfits, bright colours and more earthy colours too Wink

LagoDiComo · 13/10/2016 12:18

Last time I wore heels I put my back out. I console myself with the fact that flat shoes are on trend - you can get really nice ones even for evenings - and the fact that toppling along in heels you aren't in control of and feel miserable in is far less attractive than a well fitting pair of flat shoes.

neveradullmoment99 · 13/10/2016 12:55

Those boots are gorgeous!!!! [from eska] I would definetly wear them.

PinkSwimGoggles · 13/10/2016 12:57

no
I suspect you are wearing the wrong size. try a size bigger/wider.
feet change over time what might have fitter in younger years can be too small/narrow later.

QueenJuggler · 13/10/2016 13:09

My feet have increased a whole size in the last 10 years. Half size when I was pregnant with DD, and another half size in the 8 years since. Get your feet remeasured properly - you're almost definitely wearing the wrong size if all shoes hurt.

RunRabbitRunRabbit · 13/10/2016 13:11

I recently put these Sxholl insoles in all my shoes because even my Converse were giving me trouble. The insoles are heavenly.

High high heels always pinch my toes now. I can't do them. I can still wear mid heels. Insoles help but not enough to wear them on the way to work as well as round the office.

schnubbins · 13/10/2016 13:36

It is true that we are born with a thick padding on the soles of our feet that unfortunately diminishes as we age. This is now being treatable in extreme cases with injections of hyaluronic acid.

specialsubject · 13/10/2016 13:59

What was wrong with those boots? The wearer wont have the twisted calf/arse out duck walk from them.

Back in the day a high heel was two inches, not the fugly staggerers worn now. And also as we grow out of the teen sheep stage, we learn that fashion is not worth pain. Btw no.man would wear shoes that hurt.

dirtyprettything · 13/10/2016 21:25

Clarke wide fit Kendra are brilliant for my wide but small feet.
I find heeled boots generally more comfy than shoes and still wear my acne pistols a LOT

Still like putting my slippers on when I get home....

Glitteryfrog · 13/10/2016 21:36

My feet have increased a whole size in the last 10 years.

I've lost a size somewhere. I've been a big-ish size 6 all my adult life.
I have a couple of pairs of 5.5 shoes. WTF?

MsUnderstanding · 13/10/2016 21:57

Why would anyone wear shoes that hurt? Shoes are like clothes, you have to try them on in different sizes to find the ones that fit comfortably. I wear size 6 or 7 trainers but 7 or 8 in heels esp if pointy toed.

BestIsWest · 13/10/2016 22:22

Hypermobile ankles, metatarsalgia, Achilles tendinitis and maybe the beginnings of a bunion plus a history of 3 broken ankles means I've had to commit myself to flats. I do struggle with knowing what to wear with dresses. I feel I need a heel even if it's only an inch.

MrsSchadenfreude · 13/10/2016 22:34

I have Hotter court shoes for work. Blush They have a low heel but don't look too grannyish. I may be deluding myself though.

flopsypopsymopsy · 13/10/2016 22:42

I don't have any tolerance for uncomfortable shoes and my life has been transformed! I would only wear stupid shoes if I have to get out of a car and walk 50 yards to the restaurant.

Look at ECCO. They have a new range of shoes including high heels that have a heel which looks 15mm higher than it actually is.

Clarks, M&S, Rieker and Hotter are all comfortable but obviously some styles are a bit questionable!

CakeNinja · 13/10/2016 22:44

I still wear uncomfortable shoes on a night out! And feel hateful when watching dp put his sensible practical flat brogues on Angry
But I love wearing heels, love being taller, and they make my legs look long and lean so I suffer on.
They tend to only be uncomfortable later on in the evening though, and i can overcome this by sinking a few drinks - I don't notice the pain then!!
I love wearing heels but I used to wear them all day and all night in my younger days without feeling it. Now, at the ripe old age of 31, I feel it.
But not enough to put me off.

CakeNinja · 13/10/2016 22:45

And I tend to wear them if I'm getting cabs door to door, not if I'm going to be walking any distance!

ShyOyster · 13/10/2016 22:52

Not just me then! Oh how I miss the cheap and cheerful sky high heels from New Look that I could wear all night, dancing like mad and also walked home in them, totally pissed
My feet grew a whole size during pregnancy and are also much wider now. DS wil be 4 soon so doubt that will ever shrink back.
I cannot do uncomfortable any more. None of my old heels or any shoes fit any more, so it's all sensible now. Booooring. But, frankly, I don't give a shit any more,

mumonahottinroof · 14/10/2016 09:54

It's just so hard to find a flat shoe that works with a pretty dress for parties or whatever, all the sensible heels tend to be in dark colours. The LKBs are silver. I shall try them in a bigger size, though I fear they've sold out by now. I only want to wear fancy shoes max 3 days a year, the rest of the time it is all Fiftflop trainers and brogues for me and I couldn't care less. Glad I am not alone Smile

45 and have been in comfortable shoes for 10 years. I think as a result of this my feet are pretty and not ruined by wearing shoes that don't like me. My toe nails are healthy looking and toe nail shaped. My toes are normal toe shape and not bent from heels (my friend suffers this and had to have surgery). I do not have issues with built up hard skin. And I can run for the bus after a long day of wearing my comfortable shoes. My feet are happy and smug as hell.

Oldraver · 14/10/2016 11:00

I've never really got on with heels anyway and have spent my working life in trainers so have been used to 'comfy' forever. I have quite high arches so need something with support. I hate shoes that are 'flat' and have no shape..it started a while back with the god awful gladiator and ballet flats...I reckon in years to come they will cripple feet more than high heels ever did.

I saw something recently with regard to feet appearing to get bigger (it was a short video on a link on here about orthotics....It was something about the lack of support making the feet longer. It sort of makes sense

JanetStWalker · 15/10/2016 11:54

My feet have shrunk too, or shoes are getting bigger? I take a 61/2 or even a 6 sometimes now, which is pretty small for someone nearly 5'10!

SuperFlyHigh · 15/10/2016 12:07

How about uterque (Zara posh brand) they have lovely boots?

I fell awkwardly balancing in yoga the other week and sprained or broke my little end toe on right foot, it bruised and needed ice... OWWWWWW

Am 45.

Shiningexample · 15/10/2016 12:15

I think its just that foot unfriendly shoes cause damage to your feet and muscular skeletal system in general, this accumulates over time and so causes more problems as you get older

Of course there are other non footwear related problems which also get worse over time

Personally I value bodily integrity over fashion
