Who do you trust to buy the perfect foundation-type stuff from?

Would you trust a brand for always delivering the right shade and level of base for you? (Foundation, concealer, tinted moisturiser whatever looks best) Would you always trust the sales assistants to be well trained and not flogging you stuff? Or do you trust yourself? In other words I need some good but natural coverage - especially for this time of year. How do I go about it? I would consider anything; high end, Boots own, supermarket whatever.

Wow, loads of replies! What I think I take from it is don't be in too much of a hurry and try a few things. Thanks.

I had that drawer - loads of foundations and concealer and all other past it make up. Earlier in the summer I chucked nearly everything. It was brilliant! Just as much wasted coagulating in my drawer as in the bin. However, the weather cooling down, my skin feeling dry, pasty after a horror cold I need to get some new stuff in.

try it out on your face then look at it outside you really don't need a salesperson to do this for you

You need a good primer and then pretty much any half decent foundation that's a colour match will stay put all day

Armani or no7.
Look at the first 5 ingredients for different brands and most are similar.
Cyclopentaloxane type silicones are lighter than dimethicone.
I find no7 really good. But they have too many varieties so it is difficult to choose.

I tried Clinique beyond perfecting today. The sales assistant came up with a good colour match but it feels a bit scratchy after a couple of hours.

Tantpoke I did a lot of research on primers a few years ago and tried three different ones that were highly recommended but it just felt like my make up fell off afterwards. I don't know what went wrong?

I'm not really a foundation wearer anymore, but I do wear tinted moisturiser from Bobbi Brown. I wore Laura Mercier for a while but the colour was too pink. Before that I wore MAC but I think they must have tweaked the numbers and they were too yellow. I have always struggled with high street foundations. Colours just don't match my skin tone

I'm not brand loyal at all. I'm currently rotating Lancôme, Smashbox and Urban Decay foundations. I find all make up people pushy and I am a pushover in that one aspect of my life!

If I were to put a blob of all those foundations on my hand they are all clearly different colours but when blended they all suit me Confused it's so weird. For that reason I'm happy to go with anyone once I've been matched. I do tend to have it applied then walk around for an hour or so to test the colour in different lights and to see how it wears.

I'm currently using Diorskin Star foundation, light to medium coverage, with a slight glow and I then pop a bit of Dior Skinflash on my dark circles and in my lines and wrinkles. Expensive but so worth it!
