Is anyone on here actually a size 0?

SmileysPeople · 06/02/2007 17:38

I don't know anyone in RL, that is this mythgical, celebrity size.
Are there any on here?

And I always think , where do people that size buy their clothes? Apart from in Mothercare?

Is this following on from Fio's thread earlier today? Well it doesn't really matter tbh but I suggest you have a look.

Also, I thought BMI wasn't considered a relevant measurement anymore. Could be wrong though.

lol at Mothercare - not.

belgo · 06/02/2007 18:51

I've also heard that BMI's are unreliable - especially if you have an atheletic build. Someone very muscular could be considered overweight due to their BMI being over 25, and long distance runners could be considered underweight.

Hillary · 06/02/2007 18:52

I actually put on my 2year olds cardigan, the sleeves ended at my elbows but I could zip it up!

SmileysPeople · 06/02/2007 18:53

No I hadn't seen Fio's thread, I've been out all day. It was on the radio, discussing a documentary tomorrow night about a women whose is a size 12 who tries to starve herself to a size 0, that got ne thinking. How can I find Fio's thread?

Apologioes if mothercare comment was offensive to anyone, not intended, just a throw awy remark.

why did you put it on hillary?
were you chilly?

BuffysMum · 06/02/2007 18:55

what really annoys me is people moaning about my size (being slim but looking very slim due to no-hips ie opposite of per shaped) as they tuck into yet another cake/doughnut etc etc etc. I have been borderline overweight in the past, I have been borderline under weight in the past (pre-kids due to stress) but I am healthy - eat proper food when I'm hungry etc - I just naturally have skinny hips and being short does mean you tend to be a more petite frame.

Yes the size difference between shops really irritates me Per Una size 8 is huge on me now and so is Karen Millen so perhaps I truely am a size 0 hips, shame that the waist is a size bigger! I look back on the photos when I was boderline underweight - only time in my life I had a true waist and no inner wobbly thighs ) I liked it and still managed to conceive by accident......

Hillary · 06/02/2007 18:57

Ha ha.... no my friend said it would look good on me so I pretended to put it on and it actually fitted It is a knitted one though and they do stretch!

DarrellRivers · 06/02/2007 19:01

I don't think i could fit in my daughter's cardigans but am going to try tomorrow! should be good for a laugh
Am chuckling at the thought of you in it with your sleeves ending at the elbows

Mercy · 06/02/2007 19:03

Fio's thread re size zero .

Sorry, but I just get a bit annoyed when people have a bit of a laugh at smaller, naturally thin or slim people. I wouldn't dream of making a comment about larger size people and tents.

Hillary · 06/02/2007 19:05

Oh dear..he he he I'v started a trend

My big toe wouldn't fit into a size 0, quite franlkly.

nearlyfourbob · 06/02/2007 19:15

Ds could probably wear a 0.

SmileysPeople · 06/02/2007 19:15

Mercy, I think the differnece is that most of us would actually like to be thin(not all of us, and not a size 0, but a bit thinner)
so put it down to jealousy.

I seriously didn't mean any offence.

slug · 06/02/2007 19:23

I am!!!

Of course there's the small matter of the 2 in front of the 0 to consider

Hillary · 06/02/2007 19:37

So what would a healthy weight be then for a 5.7" woman?

funnypeculiar · 06/02/2007 19:46

I was a size 0 in gap pre-kids ... not any more! Am happier with my weight now (although I'dlike less of it round my tummy

I am a shortarse, however...

Hulababy · 06/02/2007 19:53

Not since being about 16 - but I am only 5 foot, and was naturally very thing back then. But looking back at pictures I was very thin; wouldn't suit me now. No where near now anyway!

The only adult I have known to be too small for size 6 was not a healthy sixe. She is about 5 foot 6/7 and was very very skinny - to the point of illness. It really wasn't great. Fortunately she has now started to put weight again and is a much healthier size 8, but still a bit too thin IIRR.

SueW · 06/02/2007 19:54

5'7" healthy weight range is 9st2lb to 11st6lb according to WW.

Hulababy · 06/02/2007 19:56

Healthy BMI is supposed to be 20-25.

Hillary · 06/02/2007 20:06

I'm just over 6 stone,

I used to have anorexia when I was younger

Mercy · 06/02/2007 20:18

SmileysPeople, no problem.

I think as is mentioned in Fio's thread that these smaller sizes are now available simply because those of us who are shorter/slimmer have to be catered for too. It's not us who have changed (whatever our size) it's the measurements:size label.

I think can see how this has happened though, because a few of you have said 'I wish I were size whatever'.

FrayedKnot · 06/02/2007 20:26

When I was in my teens I had a 32-24-32 figure which I think would have made me about a US size 2, and I am 5'8". I didn;t buy sized clothes then, apart from bras, so no idea what size I would have been. Miss Selfridge just sold S,M & L as I recall, and leggings came in one size anyway!

I ate constantly (spent my allowance on extra food because my packed lunch never filled me up etc) but I was also quite active did several dance classes a week & horseriding.

No way was I underweight, although I would have definitely described myself as skinny.

However, you ahve to consider that catwalk models probably have at least anotehr 2 inches height on that - 5'10" min I would imagine, and they are thinner. so of course they look emaciated.

I obvioulsy had a very fast metabolism which over the years has slowed down a lot and I'm now a size 14..ahh well!

The problem is I was used to eating whatever I liked whenever I liked, and it's a hard habit to break!

twelveyeargap · 06/02/2007 20:29

I should probably qualify the "xylophone ribs" statement, by saying I'm under no illusions that the rather thick layer of fat covering my ribs is any healthier.

I actually think that if it's possible to have a person who is dangerously thin because of an eating disorder sectioned under the mental health act; there is no reason why a morbidly obese person shouldn't also be considered to have an eating disorder (assuming they overeat) treated in the same way.

I know a very, very thin girl who eats a lot, but can't seem to hold fat on her body. She knows it could be dangerous if she ever gets ill as her body has no defence.

It's about balance and whilst we can't argue that some of those models are clearly starving; we also can't say that every person who is a size zero is unhealthy. I don't believe that people who are chronically overweight are healthy either, but that doesn't mean that there aren't people who are larger sizes who aren't perfectly healthy.
