Do you wear your new clothes straight away?

With me I buy things and end up saving them..not sure what I'm saving them for.
Almost like if I wear it ..I won't like it anymore and won't be special anymore
Anyone else? Or am I just mad

If i don't wear something straightaway, it's usually a sign i don't like it enough and shouldn't have bought it to be honest.

chanie44 · 02/10/2016 19:24

I used to save clothes for special occasions, but realised there weren't any, so now I wear my nice clothes regularly.

I bought a dress and decided to keep it for my birthday, which was about 6 weeks away. It was nice knowing I owned the dress bad looked forward to wearing it.

redroses86 · 02/10/2016 19:31

OP this is me entirely!! I always 'save' new clothes without ever really knowing what I'm saving them for. I think that once their worn their not new anymore and I'll lose the sense of anticipation to wear them. Also a feeling like they should be saved for some sort of occasion (I blame my Mum for this sense too!)
I've been trying recently to stop, I've just unpacked a new Asos haul. But I know I won't wear some of it for weeks, just to keep them new.

QueenCobalt · 02/10/2016 19:53

I'm exactly the same. I save things for best but yet work, school run and housework are the best it's going to get! So I''m trying to wear at least 2 things a week that I would normally save for best and you know what, it feels great to be wearing everything.

I have a few recent purchases in my wardrobe that are unworn but that's because they're jumpers and boots and it hasn't yet been cold enough. I've also got a dress which I bought specifically with an occasion in December in mind and a top that's for going out (it's lace so not really daywear) and I haven't yet been out since buying it.

TeaAddict235 · 02/10/2016 20:02

Good question OP.

No I don't wear them straight away. I often buy clothes with a purpose: work, church, flying, play, home/everyday etc, so I have to wait for that occasion to arise before wearing the items.

However this does mean that I have items stacked up in the wardrobe, sometimes forgotten until I go for a rummage. Or I end up wearing the same items to the same places and can feel a bit downtrodden say at toddler groups but look like an overdressed Christmas tree on the train to work.

My mum was always like "save the best for church or a special occasion" and I've downgraded it to "save the best for a purpose".

neveradullmoment99 · 02/10/2016 20:38

I do this always.
Then I realise they have gone on sale ggrrr!
My gran is to blame.
She always says you save that one for best ..don't bother wasting lovely clothes to sit around the house or go to tesco.

Mine too!

MeadowHay · 02/10/2016 22:49

Ugh yes I have this problem!! I buy things and they sit in my wardrobe for ages, I always feel like I should save new clothes for some kind of more special occasion even if they're just casual clothes, it's ridiculous! I have the odd thing that is still sitting in my wardrobe after literally years that I never gotten around to wearing and I still tell myself I will sometime...Blush. I don't even have tons of clothes or anything I just struggle with this one issue - it's my mam's fault, when I was little she wouldn't let me wear new clothes until it was a special occasion!!

DH is the opposite, he wears his new clothes asap, so he's trying to help me overcome this issue and I am slowly getting better!

PNGirl · 02/10/2016 23:16

I bought 2 breton tops (one from Joules which was around a tenner more than I pay for tops) about 4 weeks ago and they are still pristine in the wardrobe because I don't want to "waste" the first wear. I also have a pathological fear of being desperate to wear them and them being in the wash.

I'm going to Amsterdam in 2 weeks so maybe I'm subconsciously waiting for that?!

ChickenVindaloo · 02/10/2016 23:37

Yes, it makes my teeth itch to have clothes sitting around with labels and tags on. As soon as I get them home, I sit down with my scissors and a plastic bag and I cut out all of that crap (including the dreaded hanger straps) and fold them and put them away. Then they are officially my clothes. Although I do feel funny the first time I put them on.

JaceLancs · 02/10/2016 23:49

I keep things new if I have bought them for an occasion or for example to go on holiday
Also seasonal wear - today I bought a coat but it's not cold enough to wear yet
Other stuff has to pass the wardrobe door test - I hang it on outside of my wardrobe door if I'm not itching to wear it or haven't worn it within 2 weeks it goes back as I obviously don't like it enough
I also bought a Breton stripe dress today n put it on to go out to a friends in tonight

Amethyst81 · 03/10/2016 02:56

No I hate wearing new things! They look so pristine and I don't want them to get grubby! Then I wear my old boring tat and look the same all the time. I don't know why I buy new things really, sometimes I've forgot I've bought something and then find it months later, never worn with labels still on Blush

DustyOfSkye · 03/10/2016 03:03

Yep. This is me, a new clothes hoarder. Currently I have two tops and a dressbought months ago that I haven't worn yet. But I will soon. Dress for wedding coming up and good for work dos.

DustyOfSkye · 03/10/2016 03:03

*top for work do's

OlennasWimple · 03/10/2016 03:11

I keep clothes for "best" too - DH is the complete opposite and takes the tags off straight away to wear new clothes, even if we aren't going out anywhere after we get home Confused

I think the middle ground between us is probably the best approach TBH. I've got clothes that are still in good condition, but they are a little dated. I feel I can't justify replacing them because they are still very wearable.

CallarMorvern · 03/10/2016 05:03

I thought this was going to be a 'do you wash new clothes before wearing' thread.
I don't have enough clothes to keep anything for best, though I did buy a lovely Kew jumper in TKMaxx the other day and I'm waiting for colder weather to wear it (not that I want colder weather!).

BathshebaDarkstone · 03/10/2016 05:07

Yes, I'm like a child with a new toy! Grin
