Dying hair grey?

I am 40 and have been going grey since my early twenties, I think I am probably 60% grey/white on the crown of my head. I have naturally dark brown hair so the roots are really visible after only 3-4 weeks. I have tried having hightlights to hide the regrowth but I really don't suit lighter hair colours. I've been considering whether to dye my whole head dark grey/steel grey - something like this colour. My hair is a chin length Bob with a fringe. Will this just add years to me? I am fairly wrinkle free and cool colouring. Any thoughts anyone? Or better ideas?

The problem with dying your whole hair grey, is that your roots will still show through when they grow, as they will be a mixture of dark brown and bright white which will show up against the one colour grey.

Thanks - to be honest my roots are pretty much 100% white/grey - at least it looks that way when the white stripe appears every 4 weeks! Perhaps I should have light grey highlights on the crown as well!

I think dark grey with some light grey highlights would look really lovely.

Oh I won't be doing it myself, will definitely get a professional! I suspect I'll need the existing brown dye stripped out first. Think I'll pop into my hairdressers during the week and see what she thinks.

Google those colours as a lot of salons use them.

Grey is fabulous but I do think there's a risk when you're 40+ for it to be instantly ageing, rather than trendy young thing. How about gradually going greyer? Ashy grey blond silver lights perhaps.

See I think having ashy grey highlights would be ageing. I'd be having a totally unnatural blue/grey with a few light grey highlights which would be obviously dyed rather than just looking like I'm going grey naturally iyswim?

I think you need a better hairdresser who specialises in colour and go for 3 colours rather than just highlights which I agree can sometimes look not quite right. I have a mix of tints which are a combination of my natural colour and 2 lighter colours which disguise my grey really well. I actually have loads of grey but it all grows in really well and only need my hair doing 3 or 4 times a year.

I started a similar thread the other day but someone pointed out my roots would still grow in if I was grey all over so I scrapped that idea

I think grey highlights in dark brown hair would just look like you hadn't got round to dying your greys.

I think the dark grey would be lovely on you as you've said you don't really suit light coloured hair, and it will be fairly obvious it's been dyed that colour I think.

Decided to go for a lighter all over grey/lilac. Here is before during and after!
