Walking trousers - I am so bamboozled by choice

I am in the market for a pair of walking trousers, or maybe 2? Confused

For waterproofness overtrousers seems to be the done thing - so any recommendations for something that is not stiff and not sweaty like polybag??
And for something simply showerproof/quick drying there's just too much choice - i don't do well with choice.

Somebody choose for me!

Grin

This must be the very definition of First World Problem.
In my defence, I live in Scotland, I walk a lot and I have spent a very wet time last winter...

Craghoppers kiwi pro stretch fan here! Also they do them in different lengths so they fit on short arse me.

Although I recently got a pair by montane which are also v good.

I tend to steer away from the soft shell type marketed as shower proof. I think they would be warm although good for winter days. Less good for summer - even a Scottish one

I have a lovely pair of spray way walking trousers that are great for my short legs and very comfy.

I find that you just have to try them all on, as I find some of the fabrics really uncomfortable. I also have a pair of the Berghaus lined waterproofed ones. They are great, but can get really hot, so for preference U would go for unlined ones next time.

I like Rohan for summer waterproofs & Paramo for heavy rain. Got my Paramo off ebay - I think they have an ebay shop. Nikwax every couple of years & first pair still good as new after 6 years or so. Also tried Craghoppers but despite Nikwax treatment they didn't stay waterproof for long. Rohan do good sales.

Those Rohan Dry Roamers look great - funny, Rohan is not a make that is really on my radar, so thanks for the suggestion.

Yes, I will go and try some more of them on. I am now thinking I want one comfy 'cheap' pair for every day dog walking in the winter (v wet and muddy here) and a more 'serious' pair for actual hill walking Grin
The search is on....

Thank you for everybody's suggestions Thanks

haha, came on to suggest Craghoppers Kiwi pro stretch too.

I would not personally look at anything without a few percent Lycra else they have to be really baggy to give enough movement for scrambling.

Don't bother with the Craghoppers legging type trousers here I have them and they are as nasty as the reviews say. Which is a shame because slimmer cut trousers are easier to wear if you want to tuck into socks/out of the mud.

Gear for girls have a very good range IME.

TBH I don't wear overtrousers unless it's absolutely pouring , agree that DWR type trousers will do for most situations.

Huldra · 28/09/2016 09:23

Shame about those legging ones, I was interested in getting some.

I'm another fan of the Craghopper ones with some stretch, the winter lined ones are great too. I find they survive light rain fine.

I do have some summer weight mountain warehouse ones that I like, the cargo pockets are useful. I wish the women's Craghopper would have a cargo pocket.

I have Craghoppers Kiwi Stretch and several varieties of Rab. Jack Wolfskin are also worth considering.

I used to find Rab good for a smaller waist (I'm fairly pear shaped), but my trousers are all now at least three years old, some more like ten.

SpringSpringSpring · 28/09/2016 17:21

I find craghoppers bunch around the waist but love north face ones as they sit a bit lower and don't taper.

Never found any proper waterproof ones that aren't awful so will follow this one with interest!

blueskyinmarch · 28/09/2016 17:25

I have these Rohan trousers. They are comfy, lightweight, quick drying and shower proof. I wear them to walk the dog, go walking and to do housework. They are fab.

RaisingSteam · 28/09/2016 17:45

Now if money was no object I would look at say these, as far as I can see they are cut like soft shell jeans. Although I'm not sure about the peep-out knees! It is nice to see some variations on the polyester baggies that have been all there is until recently. Like the Rab joggers below. As often as not now I wear running or cycling leggings for walking TBH it is just more comfortable.

RaisingSteam · 29/09/2016 18:45

Timely email from Alpkit this morning promoting their new trouser ranges.

PacificDogwod · 30/09/2016 14:29

Damn you, RaisingSteam, now I covet their open water wet suit - that's a whole other thread! Grin
Do you rate their kit then? I had never heard of them.

Yes I think their stuff is good - I have a Filo jacket (like wearing central heating) and we have the Dozer sleeping mats. I understand it's mountain quality stuff but they go for niches rather than a massive range. There are plenty of reviews.
