Turning 50 and having a positive outlook

Can anyone help me. I will turn 50 in about a years time and am having a hard time not looking upon this age as a time of depressing gloom and the edge of a slippery slope of my body and face declining. Unlike other milestones, i seem unable to get past the idea that I shouldnt be wearing this, that or other because of my age. So...
I need positivity in my mind. What did you do when you turned 50?
Did you do a style revamp? Did you say to hell with it, its only a number and move on? Or did someone give you a boot up the arse like my dh would or something else?

I agree with previous posters about jgnoring fashion trends and wearing what suits you and buying less but better quality - the cut makes such a difference. I look best in classic clothes, I need the structure, and I don't suit patterns but brighten my clothes up with accessories and jewellery.

I find I have to work much harder to look groomed but feel so much better if I make an effort and do most of it myself at home - manicure, pedicure etc. I walk as much as possible and have my hair cut and coloured every 6 weeks.

Findmuckery is right about enjoying life, I've got much more free time now, my kids are in their late teens now and don't need me as much and I enjoy my job but am much less ambitious these days.

Liz Hurley started with advantages and her life's work is to look good; that is why her clients pay her. She is a mistress of artifice and make up, plus probably spends a couple of hours most days working at toning the physique, and several more each week fine-tuning the hair, skin and nails. The rest of us have to box smarter, to keep all our lives running and still look our best.

There is no reason to post pictures that most people would have regarded as outside their ability at 25, never mind 50 Pipachi.... unless you are Liz Hurley, and if you are, then I concede you are exceptionally good for your age.

Kalqkra I walk my dogs in fields and woods and then I walk my friend's dogs by the canal and watch the ducks and swans. Been lovely in the summer but not so good in the rain and cold but the dogs love it then they sleep the rest of the day

Kalqkra · 23/09/2016 23:22

That's awesome to be able to fit so much dog walking into each day, I and my dog count ourselves lucky to get a 40 minute romp around the woods, and there is never a dog walk that I don't come back from happy and balanced, irrespective of the weather.

I started yoga. Best thing ever.

Im about to turn 60 and wear my best clothes and perfume every day, something I decided when I turned 50. Always wear makeup , keep my hair under control and try to feel good about myself.

Lorelei76 · 23/09/2016 23:54

Doesn't liz Hurley say she's hungry all the time? She looks marvellous but nothing is worth that, well million dollar contracts maybe...

Floisme · 24/09/2016 00:27

story you're dead right about wearing your nice clothes every day. I'm terrible at this - I was brought up to 'save for best' and I've never been able to break the habit. But I'm determined to do it now. I mean let's face it, I'm 60 so what exactly am I waiting for? Grin

ShebaQueen · 24/09/2016 07:45

Floisme, that's me too! I end up never using stuff because I save it for best - crystal glasses, cashmere scarf, pearls etc. Resolving to change, but it's a hard habit to break - as you say, it's the way I was brought up.

Lovely thread
Am 49 and have grandchildren but am fitter than I ever was.
I absolutely love fitness classes and country walks and do as many as I can.I lost 16 kg over past few years and am determined to stay slim but more importantly fit
This has also had a positive impact on my mental health..
I have tweaked my fashion choices and now wear much more streamlined and simple clothes and colours, partly to suit my new shape.
I read fashion blogs and try to keep my look 'current' within the realms of what I know suits me and that I like.
I wear make up always but hate very over done look and harsh eyebrows, super long lashes etc.I like the Bobbi Brown style of make up I suppose and have warm colouring so it suits me.
I suppose I prefer a more 'expensive' look even though I certainly don't frequent very high end shops but I hate cheap looking and feeling clothes so I tend to buy selectively.
If I'm honest my biggest problem is probably my hair.
It's just below shoulder length and brunette (coloured) and it's getting harder to conceal the greys without going too blonde which ends up looking brassy.
I'm loving Victoria Beckhams hair at the moment and I'm attempting that myself as in a few years it will be too dark for me I think

neveradullmoment99 · 24/09/2016 12:00

Well thanks for everyones lovely comments Flowers
So far i have:
Been re-reading Bobbi browns book and have ordered myself -
A navy eyeliner, forest green eyeliner. I have grey and brown already but brown has never really suited my hazel eyes and its been a long time since i tried either of these colours. I have found using brown that it lacks definition. We shall see. Ordered from superdrug at very cheap prices so we will see. Also ordered practically every colour of the MUA blush as its only £1 each and gets fantastic reviews. I could mix and match. BB says to have two. One for a pop of colour and another more natural one. Also ordered nip and fab stronger glycolic pads. Rave reviews from people esp those who are menopausal who have spotty skin. For me i have combination skin that has slowly become more spotty [ down to meltdown hot flushes!!!!] and raging hormones. So thats that. About to mix up a batch of henna to tackle my grey roots at some point that are peeking through. God, its all such hard work these days!!!!
As for me on the clothing front, think i am going to sort my wardrobe and see what i have. I do love clothes...
