Winter coats for the DC - where do you get yours?

For the last few years I've bought coats for DD (6) from BHS but they're no longer around here or online. M&S coats didn't feel very warm. Where do you get reasonably priced, warm, waterproof coats from (suitable for school playtime)? Can be any colour, not just black or navy.

Also looking for DS (3).

Thanks!

Gap or Decathlon.

There is always a silly offer on for Gap so I have never spent a fortune on anything from there, and the quality of their down filled coats are great. They wouldn't survive a complete downpour but definitely a rain shower or two.

Decathlon have all sorts of jackets, their ski ones are particularly lovely (usually, not looked this year yet!) and reasonably priced, and not bulky so perfect for school/weekend

The Blue Zoo range of childrenswear at Debenhams is v good IMO.

CallarMorvern · 20/09/2016 12:47

I wouldn't bother with showerproof coats as they won't keep them dry in a real downpour.
Trespass really vary, DD's has a thin quilted lining, you can get ones that you zio a fleece in. So as warm as you want really.
Forgot to mention Regatta, I've been guilty of being a bit sniffy about it as a brand, but DD's last waterproof was a Regatta and it was fab, never needed reproofing in 2yrs. She also has a Regatta soft-shell that has been brilliant.

DS has had Next performance jackets for the past three years, which are excellent, very warm and totally waterproof. I've got my eye on a Boden one for this year though.

DS has got a Trespass one this year, with a zip in fleece, which was £30. He's only been wearing it a couple of days but so far so good.

His last winter coat was from Landsend and was fabulous! Their sales are well worth checking out. The only downside was the odd sizing. It had sleeves that you were supposed to be able to unpick and make longer but the body of the coat was far too short, so he outgrew it in length way before the arms became an issue! Hmm But it lasted him 2 winters so not a major issue

I buy the Polarn O Pyret zipped waterproof coat with a detachable fleece - always buy using a discount code.

Theya re pricy bui I buy big and also pass them down so I get 3-4 years wear out of both the coat and the fleece.

Believeitornot · 20/09/2016 15:33

Muddy puddles! They usually have discounts. Coats are brilliant.

Just bought dd5 a lovely red padded one very cheaply from sainsburys with the 25% off til mon

madmomma · 20/09/2016 17:26

It was under £20 and will keep her bum warm and has a furry hood. They also had them in a pretty oyster-ish colour but she'll get paint on Hera.

Lands End. Awesome coats.

Just thought I'd pop back and update.

We went to Decathlon yesterday and they didn't have a lot in for either DD or DS. They were either very dark colours or very gaudy. We also called in at Mothercare and their selection was even worse, and none of their coats felt very thick at all. On the way home we thought we'd just try Tesco, but again, hardly any to choose from (one nice coat for DS but they didn't have any in his size) so we gave up.

I went shopping this afternoon and called in to Matalan which was next door to where I was and was really impressed! Picked up two coats that said 'windproof' and 'waterproof' on the labels for just under £30 each. They felt lovely and warm, perfect for chilly playtimes and days on our new allotment! Both coats were the same, just different colours for boys and girls (purple for girls, and also came in a red and a blue).

Uniqlo. Both my dcs hate bulk and these are incredibly thin and light but (apparently) super warm. I also buy them a thin fleece (normally polarn) to wear underneath if the temp really drops.

Starryeyed16 · 26/09/2016 09:49

Debenhams had some lovely ones in recently and got one in the sale, afew months back whilst it was still warm, tesco and asda normally have a good range

WhooooAmI24601 · 26/09/2016 10:18

DS2 (5) has a Joules coat we saw in the summer sale, navy with tractors and diggers all over it and lovely thick fleecy lining.

DS1 (10) wanted a navy parka and we saw one in Next I liked, but popped to Ted Baker and they had exactly the same but far better quality for £10 more so he had that. Only thing with Ted Baker is that the sizing comes up small for boys.

ThomasRichard · 26/09/2016 10:19

They do look nice!

Oldraver · 26/09/2016 10:23

I see you have found some but would like to add to the thread..

Last two years DS had a padded jacket from Sainsburys...lovely and warm technically probably only showerproof, though he never got more than wet on the surface. Previously he had a Verbaudet one for three years and well worth the money

I have just bought him this Trespass one but in bright blue.

There are a lot of decent coats on M+M
