Hippy-ish clothes for middle aged women.

I love the look of long floaty tunics, or linen, with linen trousers or harem pants, but can never find any! I recently bought my DD1 some new harem pants..the real, dropped crotch - looks like a nappy would fit- style and tried them on...I now understand why she loves them, but at 48 they looked a bit daft on me!

I like natural fabrics as much as possible but also hate ironing

My local 'posh market town' has some lovely tunics but are VERY expensive..aimed at fleecing foreign tourists! There must be some less expensive options!

It's not a flattering style for middle aged women.
Everyone I've seen wearing clothes like that look like the mad cat lady or homeless.

Hush Harem trousers are brilliant

Lots of lovely cotton/linen/silk stuff on eBay - I search for brands I like and tend to buy brand-new stuff with or without tags or labels. So far have not had a bad experience and have saved a ton.

Go on etsy and have some custom-made for you. It will be cheaper than you think and if you choose wisely, the money goes directly to the person making the clothing.

I just bought some from Forgotten Tribes recently. They are proper hippy. But other places I have bought harem trousers from which are more normal recently are Debenhams and H&M.

I've bought some things from Emma's Emporium and Forgotten Tribes - both are reasonably priced. Shivaeye and Karma Gear both have stalls which do the rounds on the festival circuit throughout the year.

Throw a few random searches into ebay using the words hippy, yoga, ali baba, psy, festival, gringo or pixie will bring up loads of stuff.

Thing is, your 40s are a bad decade for droopy clothes as one tends to have started drooping oneself.

But it can look great if you are bone thin and/or have very sharp hair and grooming to counteract the untidiness that age brings to your appearance.

Primark do smashing dropped-crotch joggers which are moderne but basically 70s in shape.

I also work in a special school and have to do a LOT of manual handling and also be able to sprint after an escaping child, so we tend to wear practical clothes we can move in.. . bend, stretch etc.

www.sproutpatterns will make clothes for you in any fabric you like from www.spoonflower. My favourite is the moneta dress. I have it in cotton spandex, which allows for more movement than Im capable of!! You can also wear it with leggings/ tights and flat shoes for working in a school. The Appleton dress is also good for workwear that's smart and comfy. I don't bother with high street shops myself as I either make my own clothes with Spoonflower fabric or order from Sprout. I don't like to be limited by the high street and love the choice at Spoonflower. Probably not everyones cup of tea, but still. By the time we're in our 40's we don't care what anyone else thinks!! We like what we like!
