Properly waterproof raincoat but not a winter coat!

Anyone up for a coat challenge?

We live on the coast and get proper rain and wind...DD1 starts school this week and we'll be walking whatever the weather. I've got a long, super warm puffa coat (although the hood is bloody annoying and blows off constantly) but I've always struggled to find the perfect raincoat for when it's warm but the rain is still torrential. Must have a hood (that tightens so doesn't blow off!), be properly waterproof and not 'showerproof' (pah, not our showers!), be as long as possible so I don't get wet legs and have some sort of waist shape so my huge norks don't make me look any more pregnant.

I have looked everywhere I can think of to no avail so I await the awesome power of S&B! Smile

I'm quite liking this one - it looks reasonably long and lightweight www.joules.com/Women/New-In/Stormaway/Waterproof-Coat/Marine-Navy?id=V_STORMAWAY|MARNAVY here]] but a bit unsure about the stripes - are they a bit mumsy/Boden-twee?! And it's pretty expensive. 25% off does help a bit though!

I'm also tempted by the target dry which is the longest I've seen and looks pretty seriously weatherproof and for a very good price - but it is a bit shapeless looking...

Not massively keen on the seasalt ones and why oh why are so many rain coats so flipping short?!!

Having had a proper soaking today (and all umbrellas stolen by the kids Hmm) I really need to sort this out soon!

Another vote for Dirkinson. I buy mine from Viking Kids website

florascotianew · 10/09/2016 19:47

Agree Didricksons. Excellent. And relatively stylish. Agree that Viking Kids is good website. Try also Outnorth - based in Sweden but ships quickly and cheaply to UK.
I've tried Seasalt once and got wet through in the mountains where it could have been really important to stay dry. Fortunately this was in Austria where after about an hour we came across local inn where there was warmth and food and - amazingly - local music (we'd stumbled across afternoon practice session).
I live in a part of Scotland where we have a lot of bad weather. Tourists wear Seasalt; locals wear often rather expensive German/Scandinavian mountain gear. Either that or cheap and bulky but v effective stuff from local industrial ships' chandlers.

I bought that joules one yesterday!
Hoping it looks nice in real life as never bought a coat online before...

celeryisnotasuperfood · 10/09/2016 20:30

Would agree that I am not expecting it to be amazing technically as it is a fashion brand - just good enough for wet walks to and from school. I haven't got a didriksons budget but if I needed great technical performance I would maybe justify that kind of money...

I have a Jack Murphy wax cotton coat.

Irish equestrian/country wear firm. Bit less 'obvious' than Barbour/Joules etc.

It's marvellous, not too heavy, but wind and waterproof. Love it.

luckythirteen · 10/09/2016 20:35

Another vote for Lighthouse - I have this and it is really waterproof and comfortable.

Toomanywheeliebinsagain · 10/09/2016 20:37

My sea salt is one of the best purchases I have ever made. It is so completely waterproof even if it's pouring down.

TheLittlestBear · 10/09/2016 20:40

Helly Hansen? If you can get to an outlet they are quite cheap

sandyposy · 10/09/2016 21:32

thanks to those who mentioned the lighthouse Isla, finally a waterproof jacket with cotton lining. And 20% off on their website. Bought, happy!

ChocolateIsNotSleep · 10/09/2016 22:25

Celery please can you report back? I do like the Didriksons Thelma but can't find it in a 12 anywhere atm!

Will do but I can't see it being delivered before the discount ends tomorrow. Suspect it will be here Monday or Tuesday...

ChocolateIsNotSleep · 10/09/2016 23:17

Ahem Blush

Although I don't think it will cut the mustard on proper weather days and I'm still not sure about the stripes. But hey that's what returns are for, right?

Which Didrikson would you recommend? Lndn

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 10/09/2016 23:56

I love my seasalt coat and it's actually quite flattering for a rain coat.

bingohandjob · 11/09/2016 08:02

Seasalt Hellweathers - properly waterproof and breathable. My "lightweight" North Face trench coat was so sweaty inside after walking for ten minutes! Didriksons also wonderful.

Shockers · 11/09/2016 08:06

I came on to say Seasalt!

user1471456822 · 11/09/2016 08:50

God these threads are costing me a lot of money! Now I want a seasalt coat!!

PITA that the shops are only in England tho as I'd like to go in and try on hundreds!

Honeywineandcleyshoots · 11/09/2016 09:02

Are there any Seasalt rain coats with plain hoods? Not so keen on theses patterned / striped hoodies.

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 11/09/2016 13:29

Yes, loads with plain hoods.

Honeywineandcleyshoots · 11/09/2016 15:05

thank you msadorable

celeryisnotasuperfood · 13/09/2016 13:50

Chocolate - it's arrived. Am pleased with it - it's VERY warm. The sizing is generous - I got a 14 which has room but suspect a 12 may be too tight with slouchy jumpers.
Hopefully the pics have attached...
