Expensive sun cream is it worth it?

Debating whether to take the plunge and buy either some Lancaster or Clarins suncream for my forthcoming holidays. Is it worth it or should I just stick to P20 or soltan?

Tinklypoo - Ultrasun do a facial one, and it's fantastic. Soaks straight in, and lasts all day.

I use Le Roche Posay sun cream because the kids get a rash from every other brand I have tried.
It's €22 but that's a huge tube that lasts the whole year.
(we are in Ireland so a teaspoon full would last the whole year : )

Yes Coco, the cheaper ones tend to be more effective because people use them properly!
Generous use is important for them to work effectively.
People are far too sparing with expensive ones.

Sprays have their uses but people don't tend to use them properly. They don't get enough coverage and they miss bits. If you are thoroughly sprayed then you are fine with them.

P20 is evil. That stuff has seriously screwed up my skin.

Only thing I can use now is SunSense sensitive or green people organic kids. They're the only ones I'll put on my kids too: not just because of my now massive sunscreen allergy (cheers, P20) but I wouldn't want my kids to ever suffer with the same hideous reaction.

Less chemicals on their skin the better.

P20 is. Brilliant for kids who are in and out of the water .It lasts well and my kids don't react to it.Otherwise the only ones they and I are fine with are Clinique and ROC.This year my eldest got a really itchy rash from Nivea kids and thought she had seen an Aloe Vera plant. After her and dh slathering it on and the rush to the shower and subsequent blisters ,we won't be doing that again.

I once applied p20 on top of a spray tan. It turned me completely yellow and I was like Marge Simpson for the week because it wouldn't come off!

Tinklypoo If you are going to wear make up over suncream why don't you invest in some foundation with a high SPF instead?

I can't imagine anything worse than plastering make-up on my face during the day when on holiday somewhere hot.

I read up on product tests and many of the expensive brands didn't live up to their claims. Calypso was rated well but I believe has a controversial ingredient. Aldis cream is 5 star UVA and came out well in product tests so I use that on my body, and ultra sun on my face.

BagelGoesWalking · 23/08/2016 23:03

Used to use Nivea but always gave me a slight reaction. Splashed out on more expensive Aveeno sunscreen 30 SPF (from Amazon) and it was great! Used it much more liberally because I knew it wouldn't react with my skin, especially on my face, and didn't get burnt at all Smile Piz Buin Allergy sunscreen is also very good.

derektheladyhamster · 23/08/2016 23:09

I use biore watery essence as an all year round skin care for my face as I break out. Aldi all Over the rest of me!

GoneClubbing · 23/08/2016 23:12

I use Clarins wrinkle control cream spf 30 on my face, I think it comes in 50 too. It's lovely and light and smells gorgeous, and only needs one application a day. A little goes a long way. It feels much nicer on my face than usual sun cream and at about £18 a go it isn't too extortionate Smile

NeedAnotherGlass · 23/08/2016 23:27

There isn't one single suncream that will work for everyone. People can be allergic or react to various different ingredients.
Try out different ones until you find the ones that work well for you.
That might mean different ones for different members of the family.

BeaLola · 23/08/2016 23:43

For my face I either use La Roche Posay, Clinique city block and when I go to work and wear makeup my Chanel SPF 30 make up Les beiges. Out in the garden all day I have used Ultra Sun this year - free on a M&S beauty box but I found it too thick in consistency.

For holidays in the last 2 years have switched from Soltan to Nivea invisible spray factor 30 & 50 and have not burnt at all whereas Soltan I seemed too. Not overally impressed when I tried Clarins
Best investment for my DS - he has Nivea the one that goes on light green and a stick one for his face - he is very good at applying plus I buy him the high protection sun vests/shorts and swim all in one got holidays and they have worked a treat at protecting arms, legs etc.

SuckingEggs · 23/08/2016 23:45

Ultrasun is amazing. Worth every penny.

CallarMorvern · 24/08/2016 04:14

DH is a redhead who lobsters at a mere glimpse of sun, he also has psoriasis and supersensitive skin. Ultrasun is the only cream that works for him, though I wince at the price.
I use Lovea for DD, as I'm not keen on the chemicals in some sunscreens and I rarely use sunscreen, so just use DD's.
