Hair dye to cover my greys without turning me into a goth!

Can anyone recommend a natural looking hairdye for dark brown hair? I've tried a few mid-brown dyes but they are all too dark and light brown dyes look too blondy.

Unfortunately I cant afford to have it dyed at the hairdressers, so I need to find a good match from a box dye. All recommendations welcome!

Majirel in a 6 will give you a mid/light brown. You can buy it online and apply at home. I mix with a cream peroxide and is much easier to apply than a box dye.
Colour is much more longer lasting too.

I use Nice n Easy Root Touch Up in medium brown. It's great for targeting specific areas of grey without having to colour everywhere. It also seems to blend in fine with my natural colour which is dark brown.

I henna my dark brown hair and it turns the greys a rich coppery red, it sounds like it would look naff but it actually blends into the rest of my hair and looks very natural, plus the regrowth with henna somehow seems more subtle than with regular dyes

I wash mine with the Superdrug wash in/wash out colours - it's pretty good for masking greys, they start off a kind of coppery colour and wash out to a dark blonde. Then I condition with a coloured conditioner (£1.00 at Tesco) I've got a fair few greys and hate that all over goth look I get with semi-permanents too.

I use l' oreal casting 500 which is brown. My hair sounds very like yours and I get good coverage of greys but do not look goth like.

I can't recommend Daniel Field highly enough.
I have dark brown hair that would actually be mostly white these days but the dye covers it really well. It avoids all the nasty ingredients you get in other dyes and therefore it preserves the condition. (It does not work to lighten though).

Lush henna in brun is rich brown.

Or get a range of colours and mix your own. It's so lovely for your hair's condition, smells gorgeous and lasts.

I second what MouldyPeach says about henna - I have natural dark brown hair with loads a bit of grey, and I use henna mixed with powdered indigo (which tones the red down a bit, and gives a rich chocolate brown). It's a bit fiddlier than a box dye, but leaves my hair very smooth and soft, and with a very natural-looking colour. I buy the henna and indigo off ebay and 100g of each lasts for ages, making it much cheaper than commercial dyes.
