What items don't date?

candykane25 · 08/08/2016 12:53

My first thought was a sixties style shift dress. Something simple, sleeveless, round neck, a line ish and above knee.
A black polo neck doesn't date.
On another camel coat thread there are opposing views about whether they date. I think buttons and detailings date but some cuts don't.
What would you say doesn't date?

I read a theory a long time ago that skinnie jeans came in to fashion when going out/semi smart clothing = jeans and a nice top. People wanted to showcase their "nice top" so jeans became skinnie to highlight the top. And now most of our tops go with the jeans and so do shoes and boots.

So it will take another major social change for skinnie jeans not to be such a defining look as they are now.

The only clothing I have that I've been able to wear for years are a pair of real cowboy boots my brother gave me . They are half my age and haven't been OK to wear every year but more often than not. And a navy v neck jumper.

cressetmama · 09/08/2016 13:47

I buy mostly neutral basics in simple shapes like Candy, mostly, but as flo has pointed out, your body evolves through time, as does your life.

I have rarely been without a version of navy, grey and black V neck sweaters.

Cowboy boots are also fairly immune to trends although I haven't missed mine since I replaced them with Spanish style riding boots.

Levi's 501s are great if they suit you; I've had successive pairs since I was 12.

All worn together sometimes.... I haven't had a black leather jacket for 30+ years, and have been wondering about one, though of a mind with shellsuit that they've become ubiquitous and should be treated with caution.

rightknockered · 09/08/2016 13:50

My Burberry's trench coat
A long (ankle length) black wool coat ( I got one in M&S around 20 years ago, and is now sadly looking past it's best and I'm looking for a replacement)

I had my mums navy blue blazer that she had made in the early 80's. I wish I could wear it but it's a size 10 but feels like a small fitting 8. It's in the classic Chanel design. It was destined for the charity shop but I saved it. It's made from very soft wool and hasn't got a single bobble on it. I gave it to my sister who had it adapted. She wears it with cigarette trousers and either a crisp white shirt or sleeveless silk champagne coloured vest.

Regarding leather jackets - there still seem to be plenty of bikers in the autumn previews but I've noticed that Me and Em are doing one that's more oversized and a bit 80s(and very £££ even for them).
www.meandem.com/boyfriend-leather-jacket-1

There are also lots of bombers in the shops and, although I've not spotted a leather one yet, I have a feeling - and that's all it is - that things may be starting to turn.

(Mind you I should declare an interest here as I recently bought a leather jacket in a charity shop, probably dating from around 10 years ago, and it's more bomber than biker Wink)

It wouldn't put me off buying a biker because I still think they'll be around for a few years and there's not a huge difference in shape yet and most of all, I like them. But if I did get one, I would work it very hard and def not save it for best.

Floisme · 09/08/2016 18:36

... and just I hit 'post' I get an email from Jigsaw with this:
www.jigsaw-online.com/product/clean-leather-jacket-/J28876_BK000
Not massively different from a biker but still a bit of a change.

And All Saints have got this in:

Whistles still doing several bikers though including this beauty:

JaceLancs · 09/08/2016 18:43

Very plain knitwear doesn't date in my opinion
I have wool jumpers including cashmere with v neck or round neck that are identical to those I wore 40 years ago
Classic style cardigans are the same as long as they have no details are straight up and down with straight sleeves

PNGirl · 09/08/2016 19:47

Converse All Stars have been popular consistently for at least 15 years with people of all ages. It's been interesting to see Nike Airs making a resurgence 20 years on!

Beyond that, everything dates I think. I recently got a black All Saints leather jacket with very little detailing (my last leathet jacket was good for 8 years) to last me but I bought an olive green biker in their sale in full knowledge I may move it on in a couple of seasons.

candykane25 · 09/08/2016 19:57

I had navy converse 20yrs ago and they'd already been around forever then.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 09/08/2016 20:28

YY to Converse. I had some in about 85 and have several pairs now (not the same ones!).

revealall · 09/08/2016 23:58

I think things that are never "in" are the only things that don't date.
I wear a thick wool boxy cardi every year - purchased 29 years ago ( remember as it was my first ever shopping spree in London ). Every year I get comments on my cool jumper. It was never a fashion item though.

I'm interested to see what happens to hair now though. Long hair is such a thing now and seems to enhance the style of most people.
But like everything it will fall out of fashion and I wonder what will come next.

Floisme · 10/08/2016 08:47

Ooh hadn't thought about converse. Are they the same style as they were in the 80s? I can't remember.

reveal I think we're seeing the end of long, poker straight hair, thank god. I've noticed far more young women recently with curly or wavy hair. I don't know if it's natural or permed but it looks great.

Floisme · 10/08/2016 08:49

Oh Blush
Sorry to everyone who straightens their hair. I'm just so bored with that look - it makes everyone look the same.

Floisme · 10/08/2016 08:50

That wasn't any better was it? Sorry. Think I'd better go now.

candykane25 · 10/08/2016 08:52

Converse has never changed. I wear vans now though.
I don't know anyone my age with long hair. In fact I only know one person with long hair, she is a bit younger than me and she's recently gone from very long to a lob.

I think that whilst everything dates, it tends to be the overall look more than just one item, if an item of clothing fits well and looks good on you it can be worn slightly differently for years to keep it modern. However items that were really fashionable date more than items that just looked good.
I'm early 20s and I love skinny jeans. To me all bootleg jeans look very dated and odd as I only ever wore them as a child, so it looks like someone is dressing as a child. I always think its interesting on mn as lots of people hate skinny jeans and love bootlegs. People have been saying skinny jeans are on the out for years and they are still in

charliethebear · 10/08/2016 09:12

I cant imagine anything worse than a bootleg jean and I'm not sure why Grin

ShellSuitonBonfireNight · 10/08/2016 09:13

Flo There are some v attractive jackets in your link, especially the burgandy one. I have to admit I'm not keen on the Me & Em one, but the price may be clouding my decision somewhat...

I've really gone off Converse...after loving them for so long.

Knitwear doesn't seem to date, such as an Arran jumper?

I've also been thinking Grandad style shirts seem pretty resistant to trends, although Henleys are having a bit of moment right now.

ShellSuitonBonfireNight · 10/08/2016 09:19

Charlie Bootlegs never really went away
..I've been wearing them alongside my skinny jeans for the last 10 years. Admittedly they got tighter around the thigh area but to me a kick-flare jean is just a Bootleg hiding it's untrendy name.

I'm 30 though and I will admit while I've been wearing both style of jeans, all my friends have firmly been in skinnys. I just like the silhouette of the kickflare on my bodyshape.

candykane25 · 10/08/2016 09:23

When bit cuts first came in, they were very dark, a bit 70s and actually a godsend for wearing ankle boots with as previously jeans were Levi 501 style or mum cut and wearing nice ankle boots with heels didn't look quite right. The boot cut went over the ankle boot and made legs look longer. I wore then in the 90s when I was you X and slim and they looked fabulous.
Then boot it's became less tailored, more baggy, less 70s, less dark and became a mum staple through practicality.
Now I still wear boot cut occasionally as a short fitted too does not look right with skinnies. But I have to balance it out carefully otherwise they make me look (more) short and fat.
I wear skinnies sometimes because thy are practical with a long line too and can be rolled up in summer and worn with longer boots in winter.
However I am fed up of feeling wheezed in skinnies. I want more room.
So relaxed skinnies and straight leg appeal more now.
I agree with the social shift theory.
Nicer and more stylish ankle boots made boot cuts happen. Before then boots were pretty plain and unexciting

I have a brilliant Arran jumper knitted by my gran for my grandad 60 yrs ago :)

I think that Jigsaw leather jacket will date faster than a biker jacket, as it hasn't got a collar, and collarless has been a thing for quite a long time.

Doesn't stop me wanting it though!

candykane25 · 10/08/2016 10:17

There are two films that I like that have wardrobes I would happily wear today. Meg Ryan I'm you've got mail, and renee Russo in the remake of the Thomas crown remake. Both made in tne 90s (I think).

MadameCholetsDirtySecret · 10/08/2016 10:17

Elegant doesn't date. Jeans and a white shirt can be v elegant as can a Chanel suit.

revealall · 10/08/2016 10:39

I think you need to consider the age of the person wearing the timeless classic too. Most of us remember boot cuts from teens or childhood. In 10 years all the youth will only have grown up with skinnies. That's why they will seem old.
Most of us will be out of high fashion and happy to wear what suits our style. But tight jeans, flares, 501's are all timeless really coming in and out. I do remember in the 90's talk that denim was over. It was all cargos, then skirts. Glad that was wrong.

It's interesting to see the change in amount of actual clothing covering people. From Tudors to Victorians to now, we wear less volume. My prediction is we'll be wearing hardly anything given another 100 years.
