What to wear on the plane

We are off to HKG in a few weeks, and I am pondering what to wear for the 13 hr flight. This sounds silly but I want to look like I am in control and stylish and not appear at check-in in my jogging pants and sweater, which I know will be ever so comfy. .
So suggestions please for something to wear whilst looking after my 15mth DD; something pratical (food stains / playing); comfy and stylish please.

I usually go for loose fitting, tie waist trousers (not linen, it creases to bu@@ery ) and then layers. A tshirt and cardigan type top (open but ties at the top, if that makes sense).
Spare tshirt and prob. spare cardi type top for when child spills ribena down you.
Always take a pashmina - the temp can vary on the a/c so you can wrap up in it, use it as a pillow, wrap dc in it or use it as a cover up when dc spills a second cup of ribena over you.

Layers are important. It can get very chilly on a plane but you can get hot running through the airport especially with little ones in tow. I would wear jeans, comfy jeans but they should be dark, something you would wear out on Sat. night. Add a light vest, top, wear a cardigan over that. Cashmere is the nicest. Cashmere socks are a must as is comfy shoes, no heels, no heels, no heels. I always fly up front and nobody ever wears heels. A good size but nice looking handbag. Be comftorable but not shabby. Do be aware though that you won't get an upgrade with a child in tow so don't try to dress for that.

With a 15 m old my advice would be a couple of spare clothes for her and one for you. Dress her the cuest you can and you will get lots of volunteers to hold her/play with her while you have your food or to allow you to go to the toilet (the most difficult task about traveling alone with a baby). Avoid jogging pants like the plague, people are far nicer to people who don't wear them, even when we all would be dying to fly long haul on our pijamas.

When DS was that age I had a little apron from IKEA that he wore all the flight long plus slipers. THat save me from the inevitable bruising of having a child crawling over me with shoues for 10+ hours. HTe apron was great and definitively reduced the stress everytime he smeared his food against his chest.

As for stylish, I don't know really, get comfy trousers (never jeans, ever!), and layers like a blouse +jumper and the inevitable pashmina.

I go with the changes of clothes mentioned previously, but as a veteran of non-gender-specific toilets on 25 hour flights to Oz, I never wear trousers anymore, and I always have a throwaway pair of socks for the flight. The toilet floors have to be seen to be believed, and trying to hold the hems of your trousers off the floor while going to the loo is just ridiculous. Long skirts are the way to go!!!

Agree with Jan, but you can always change before arriving.

A dress.... I haven't yet give up on the dream of ending up in an empty row or seats where I can lie down... now how do you do that with a young child I don't know...

CountessDracula · 29/01/2007 11:45

I think a wrap dress is a good flying clo

oh yes I was travelling solo in my head

Anniemac, I can not even graciously came out of my car wearing a skirt forget about liying down wearing one. I'm a lost case in that subject..................................................................................................................................................................... Although I have a talent to fall asleep in the most impossible places...

My only "but" about a dress would be that if you get smudged on something you will have to change completely rather than the lower/higher pieces.IYWIM

Dark shade wide trousers ( you can get stylish one) and light coloured soft cashmere top ( soft, not hot and not cold, light) and pashimini. Nice flattie in leopard print. Wow you look very stylish now
