Too many built up brassy highlights - how do I start again?

My natural hair is dark brown with some greys coming through.
I've had highlights for a few years & it's become brassy & the contrast is too much against my natural haircolour. In places it looks s bit coppery/orangey. It's all dry & frizzy I guess due to too many highlights.

I'm going to a new hairdresser tomorrow & really would like to make a change that suits me better.

I guess really I would like more of a natural look so brown hair with some caramel highlights. But how can I get back to this with my hair how it is now? I will need some kind of all over dye to keep the greys covered.

A good colourist will put some colour through the hair to break up the high lights. Not difficult for someone who knows their stuff.

Yep, talk to the colourist. Think you could bear to lose any length? The ends might be a bit past repair - but a protein shampoo and conditioner will help.

Caramel sounds lovely

I use a blue shampoo once a week to keep my lights fresh.
Might be worth a try.

Yes I wouldn't mind losing some of the length if it helps it look better. I can't look any worse!!

I just had Balayage on my built up highlights... They put dark colour at the roots and blend it out so it looks natural. Like this http://www.brit.co/balayage-hair/

Get balayage , much better than highlights .

You could ask for some brown low lights to break up the blonde and then a toner to neutralise the brassy colour.
The hairdresser should be able to recommend a toning shampoo you can continue using at home.

Alternatively, if you're naturally a dark brunette, then you could return to that colour. The condition of your hair will improve considerably if you stop using bleach.

Make sure you use a hairdresser that is confident with colour correction. Maybe go on recommendations or look at reviews? Or some salons have a colourist who has been trained specifically.

I had my highlights and dodgy at home due jobs undone almost a year ago and I'm so pleased. The colourist at the hairdressers put 2 semi-permanent colours on, about 6 weeks apart, and I now have no roots and it's very close to my natural colour.

My new hairdresser puts a light brown colour between the highlights which I'd not had done before but gives a really nice colour and evens things out from previous highlights.

I've also used that purple shampoo before (Touch of Silver?) to reduce brassiness. It's surprisingly effective after just a couple of uses.
