Use hand cream, your hands will age a long time before your face

What's yours?

Never put your face in the sun...and I haven't done since I was about 19. Always worn a foundation with SPF, and at nearly 46 I still don't have any facial lines or wrinkles. Honest Smile

Also, 'buy cheap, but twice' so true. I would far rather wear one, beautiful cashmere sweater that lasts for years, than buy 4 cheapy sweaters that barely last the Winter and look and feel cheap

Also 'spend as much as you can possibly afford on foundation'. I hate to see women/girls with drab, chalky faces in completely the wrong shade. I only wear Chanel Matt Lumiere and it's fabulous. I also buy it for my DDs (don't buy the rest of their make up, mind) just to make sure their skin looks lovely. Some of their friends wear the most dreadful foundation.

Never, or rarely wear flowers or bold patterns. see Italian women for better examples of not wearing patterns. Except leopard and snake.
Never wear shoes that one cannot walk in.
Wash face with bar soap to rid it of spots and blackheads.
Acid tone.
Stay in the shade or wear a hat and avoid high spf suncreams which clog pores.
Don't wear foundation, just concealer ( I do ocassionally and it looks ok but I feel better without).
All advice from friends I now do!

Daisygarden · 28/07/2016 16:03

Kennington seriously I do the opposite of most on your list! Grin

I frequently wear florals & patterns, usually a dress.(also wear leopard and snake). Pair them with solid colours so they aren't head to toe. The right floral looks very fresh & pretty.
I would never wash face with soap (so drying). I use a face wash instead.
Would never acid tone.
Always use a high spf, but designed for face - haven't got any clogged pores! Frequently mistaken for 10 years younger (not a boast just a fact). Have used spf every day since teens.
Always wear foundation. The right one protects and treats the skin. Any decent concealer is usually too textured on own, unless you are a teen and have naturally young, line-free, blotch-free skin and literally need a tiny swipe.

I guess it's horses for courses?!

Daisygarden · 28/07/2016 16:07

MaQueen - also love the Chanel foundation but I can't get the perfect shade match for it and the closest one oxidizes on me. I use Clarins Everlasting for winter coverage and Estee Lauder Double Wear light for summer. Always Chanel loose powder though, it's expensive but lasts around six months on me, in daily use.

Kennington · 28/07/2016 19:09

Oh dear! Maybe I am doing it all wrong. It isn't as if I go around looking fantastic Smile

Daisygarden · 28/07/2016 19:33

I think it's whatever works for the person, and I'm sure you do go around looking fantastic, if you like leopard and snake prints! I can say that spf's for faces have come on a long way since using actual basic sun-tan cream for faces. There is better technology these days and it doesn't have to be expensive. Currently I am using L'Oreal Revitalift SPF30 which is under £10 in most places (used with a separate eye cream). I haven't found it to clog pores yet.

junebirthdaygirl · 28/07/2016 21:03

When you find something that suits your shape buy two in different colours. This has changed everything for me as l buy for shape when lm lucky to spot it so no impulse buying. Also get colours done and don't buy anything you don't have at least two things to wear with it.
And my own one, stock up on nice white t-shirt when you find the right one and you always look fresh.

spankhurst · 28/07/2016 21:07

If you want your hair to look like silk, treat it like silk.
Wear what makes you look and feel good rather than slavishly following fashion.

Chicinwellies · 28/07/2016 23:18

Make the best of what you've got, and be confident enough to flaunt what you love about you.
That and lvl lash lifts!

Elizabethtailored · 29/07/2016 07:17

Always make sure you have clean or polished shoes.

Surferjet · 29/07/2016 07:29

Don't smoke, drink lots of water, get a decent nights sleep & stay out of the sun.

Hopefully · 29/07/2016 08:21

Colour and style analysis (style more life changing than colour, for me) so you always wear clothes that suit.

Red lipstick always makes it look like the rest of your outfit was intentional - a friend said this to me once (I wear a lot of red lipstick, she pointed out that it makes everything else look pulled together even if it's casual). I don't abide by this all the time by any means, but it does help!

Make sure your wardrobe matches your lifestyle.

SteviebunsBottrittrundle · 29/07/2016 08:33

Oh I like the red lipstick tip^^. I never wear lipstick but might have to hunt for a nice red one.

sashh · 29/07/2016 08:50

Nothing tastes as good as thin feels.

If you genuinely believe this you need to eat better food.

SteviebunsBottrittrundle · 29/07/2016 09:07

Grin sash. Yep, I've never really understood that phrase brin bandied about. I've been really quite thin before and it didn't feel great tbh. I feel better now I'm bigger (though I do need to lose a few lbs now - can't win)!

whattheseithakasmean · 29/07/2016 11:25

I guess we are all different, but I can't think of any food that would be a decent trade off for not being able to do up my jeans. If I really want something, I'll have a small portion, but I don't want to overeat as the fleeting pleasure it may bring would not compensate for a permanent layer of fat, which is never a good look.

IceBeing · 29/07/2016 11:26

sashh 100% behind you on that one. Being thin doesn't feel like anything...not once the novelty wears off (if you have lost weight to get there). You are the same person when you are thin as you are when you aren't thin. Anybody how treats you differently can get to fuck.

I have tasted food so awesome in flavour and balance that I can still revel in the memory 5 years later.

IceBeing · 29/07/2016 11:30

Oh and here is some more advice. Your kids will never think you were a great mother, because you fit into size 8 jeans. Nor will they thank you for teaching them to obsess over their figure or appearance. They WILL thank you for demonstrating by example how to enjoy life, regardless of your shape, size or appearance.

LazyCake · 29/07/2016 12:24

Nothing tastes as good as thin feels.

I've been fat, thin and everything in between and can report that, for me at least, this adage holds true.

And FWIW, I didn't lose weight to become a better mother. I don't have to justify every decision I make about my life and my body on the basis of whether or not it helps to make me a good mum.

Getting a bit off topic now, so sorry about that...

JackandDiane · 29/07/2016 12:30

Agree with thin feels.
Also wear a fucking bikini. No one cares.
Plus your body is amazing. Treat it well, but never apologise for it

LazyCake · 29/07/2016 12:39

Yes, not sure how to put this into a pithy phrase, but it was a bit of a lightbulb moment for me when I realised that, regardless of how upset and angry I got, an omnipotent deity was not suddenly going to exchange my body for, say, Kelly Brook's. So I reasoned that, as (hopefully) I'm going to spend the next 50-odd years living in my bod, I might as well start liking it and looking after it!

KatharinaRosalie · 29/07/2016 13:29

Children learn from what you do and how you behave, not what you tell them. - true, therefore if your child actually develops childhood obesity and related problems, it is also easier to convince them to eat healthy and be active if you lead by example. Overweight parents are significantly more likely to have overweight children. I think there can be a middle ground between 'your looks are all that matter' and 'you're fine no matter what, who cares about the health'.

Fuckoffdailymailyoufuckers · 29/07/2016 13:32

Double cleanse, acid toner, moisturise.

And wear a well fitting bra.

Absolutelynothingelse · 29/07/2016 13:32

nothing tastes as good as thin feels

That phrase is going to stick in my head now and might actually be of some benefit.

SteviebunsBottrittrundle · 29/07/2016 13:36

The thing I dislike about that phrase (nothing tastes as good as skinny feels) is that it makes me think eating nice food will make me fat, which really isn't true IME. I've always loved good food and have been slim for most of my life. Eating too much food makes me fat (that's why I'm in need of losing a bit atm) and I don't even enjoy it when I do! If I overeat I feel horrid, but I just get busy and let myself get too hungry. Then when I do eat I am ravenous and overdo it before I've noticed what's happening. Completely my fault of course.

Enjoying my food, as in taking time to enjoy a decent meal does not make me fat, it seems to be quite the opposite. That phrase kind of feeds into the notion that taking pleasure in eating is wrong and to be slim you have to deprive yourself, which I have found to be completely untrue or that you can't enjoy food and be slim. I'm definitely probably overthinking though!
