DH and I have been invited by his parents to a very formal dinner (they have described it like a formal evening on a cruise). We've never been to a formal dinner and I have no idea what to wear.

I'm tall but am very, very overweight. Normally i live in shorts and t-shirts as my job is a casual outdoor job.

Can you wonderful people on style and beauty sort me out please? I need to spend less than £100 including shoes!

I'm sure you'll look lovely and completely appropriate and, hopefully, they will be the sort of thing that you can wear again.

goingmad I feel your pain.
We had a family do once and she suggested a maxi dress, when I went to it wearing the said dress she looked at me like I had crawled under from under a stone.
Bitch. I hope her expensive ball gown splits at the seams at this do.

See, in reality we shouldn't give a monkey's bum about what anyone so utterly rude thinks, but we do. Think of something you're better than her at (being nice, making friends, good values??) and do a bit of role play sucking up. Compliment her. Enjoy the nice food. The outfit you've chosen looks lovely.
