Thick wavy hair - is it possible to look stylish??

I have mid-long dark hair - wavy/semi-curly, super ridiculously thick. When I wash (which isn't more frequently than every 4 days), I do the plop thing and it looks great. Nice curls. Lasts about half a day then the thickness takes over and I look like Diana Ross. I honestly think I look best with a messy bun, and whilst this is mostly fine, it's not overly 'finished'. And does feel a little teenager-y. Can anyone help? Is it possible to have hair as thick and wavy as mine, and still look 'done'?

I have very thick wavy hair - though it's more of a giant frizzball in this heat!

I can't really help as the only thing that makes me feel polished is a professional blowdry, but what is the 'plop' thing?

StillCounting123 · 20/07/2016 20:14

Your hair sounds like my hair.

If you scan up from my feet I look stylish. Get to my hair and it's another story.

What is the 'plop' thing?

It's when you don't use a towel on your hair, but wash it at night usually, pop a little curl cream or styling product into your hair, and then tie it up using a t-shirt. It kind of keeps your curls defined as they dry, so they don't go frizzy or limp.

Not to be had in Ireland or Britain afaik, but the 12 week blow dry is the business. I can't wait to get my next one.

It's not possible without a genius of a hairdresser. Who cuts brilliantly on curly hair. If you find one, treasure him or her. Pay too much, bring chocolates and send complimentary letters. Then maybe other hairdressers will pay attention!

I've got thick, wavy, fluffy hair. It's just above my bra strap across my back and layered.
I swear by my diffuser and Sebastian Potion 9, changed my life.
I get lots of compliments on my hair and I think my hair doesn't look wild and woolly.

newtscamander · 20/07/2016 21:19

I have exactly the same hair. I have cut it into a straight messy shoulder length bob. I just leave it to dry naturally and then spray Toni and guy salt spray on in the morning and crunch it up, and during my 2 minute drive to work it makes it have defined waves and it looks great and so easy to maintain!

FeliciaJollygoodfellow · 20/07/2016 22:39

True story cressetmama and the reason I am travelling from Liverpool to Birminghamfor a hair cut in two weeks!

dinodiva · 21/07/2016 08:24

Watching - very thick, wavy hair here too.

I have mine currently in a bob (a wob? Wavy bob?). I just leave it to dry naturally, but keeping an eye on products mentioned here because when my mat leave ends in a few weeks I suppose I should try and be a bit more presentable. When it grows long it grows outwards and looks like spaniel ears.

I'm currently shedding like mad having had DD last September. I'm the only person I know who was excited by the prospect of losing hair and having more of a 'normal' amount.

PootlewasthebestFlump · 22/07/2016 20:52

I have similar hair. I recently switched to the Aveda Be Curly range and it's awesome. Nice soft wavy curls in a long bob.

I also intend to get a water softener installed as this makes the biggest difference to my hair.

Following as I also have pretty long, very thick (pregnant) wavy/curly hair and can never find a way to wear it naturally that doesn't look scruffy. Tried the bumble and bumble products for curly hair lately and thought they were crap so aby more product recommendations would be handy Smile

Following.

dinodiva ha yes I always lost a ton of hair and yet noticed no major difference in thickness after babies!

Great thread. I put some sort of frizz smoothing serum on mine then hair dryer. I also use straighteners but on a low heat to smooth it without taking the waves completely out, but the best thing as pp said is having someone cuts it really well. It makes such a difference when someone works with the wave. I always have a dry cut for this reason as I think it comes out better.

I get a lot of compliments on my hair, even though I find it a complete nightmare. If I do nothing I feel so scruffy, and I'm a fairly natural look person in general so it is annoying.

Interested in responses, and intrigued by 'plop'

^^yes yes to this. DS was born in December and I got so happy when it started falling out. Dh isn't so happy having to unblock the plug hole each week though Grin
Very dark, thick hair here too with a wave. A hairdresser once told me that the longer it is the straighter it will be as the weight will hold it down. I have no idea if that is true or not but mine does seem a little bit more presentable as it is far too long at the moment. I wear it in a messy bun too, unless I have a spare hour to straighten it. That's the only thing that makes it look good

SatsukiKusakabe · 09/08/2016 10:50

I love the messy bun look on others, but can never achieve it without too much emphasis on the 'messy'

oldlaundbooth · 09/08/2016 19:29

What's it like if you wash it less?

citychick · 09/08/2016 21:11

I have thick , wavy hair that takes off in nasty humid climates.
And I currently live in Asia, so suffer badly. Nothing works except an expensive professionally applied product.

Last year I had Kebello. That worked fine.
This year I tried Tibello. That is excellent. Half head over the front and it works a treat.
I can wash, blow dry my hair and step out into hot, sweaty very Nasty humidity and still look blow dried by the end of the day.

Expensive but def worth it.

Good luck!

citykat · 09/08/2016 21:14

Brazilian blow dry. Home hairdresser to keep cost down. Or diy kit. Game changer
