Going grey-what do you do?

I'm going grey, quite noticeably as I approach 34.

I have naturally auburn hair and went"bronde" last year which is growing out in a trendy dark route way which I don't mind. However the greys are appearing from around the edges rather than the top, if that makes sense!

I feel I want to cover it but not sure what is the best option? Highlights? Block colour? Chop it off? (it's shoulder length just now)

Plus there is the expense of maintaining it.

What works best?

I used to periodically dye my hair for fun rather than to cover grey but found as more and more grey arrived the roots looked terrible. I really didn't want to have to do it more regularly (am terribly lazy!) and I know a fair few women who have fabulous grey hair so decided to stop altogether. My hair is short anyway so only took 6 months or so to grow out and it looks so much better now. It's actually much less noticeable than grey roots.

I use a dark brown color every month or so. But I've been going gray since I was 16 (35 now) and most of my hair looks white when I see the roots. Tempted to grow it out and see how it looks, but almost pure white hair at 35 :/

I don't do anything about my grey hair, why buy into the myth that you need to look younger and attractive? Confused

Roussette · 20/07/2016 07:32

I've been going grey now for about 15-20 years and I hate it. I can't ever imagine embracing it because my grey is a horrible badger colour.

I used to be fair sort of dark blonde colour and my hair just got darker and darker and then the grey started and natural now is this ghastly dark brown and dirty grey colour. Maybe I would feel different if I was a lovely pearly grey or something but I'm not. I honestly cannot imagine ever letting the grey come through.

I have packet highlights with full colour every 10 weeks or so and it's totally worth it. I'd rather give anything up than my hairdresser. Because I have shortish hair, the grey doesn't show that much and I can leave it a good long time between colouring. I'm going slightly more ash colour now to work it in with the natural grey for when my roots show and I think it's nice.

I tried living with my grey but it drained the colour out of my face and made me look like a corpse.

It's horses for courses, some women look wonderful, others like me can't carry it off.

AnaisWatterson · 20/07/2016 10:05

My 1 or 2 greys have certainly ramped up this year (35) but I'm accepting it and letting it happen.
I think your skin tone changes and you can look better going with it.
I used to have highlights but stopped when it got so expensive, I'd imagine having blonde streaks in would hide it more though.

I use Lush henna in Brun. I get a light reddish brown which suits my colouring. The roots are obvious when they come in like with normal box dyes (which I used for years). I buy a brick with six pieces in it for about £10 and only use one piece every time I do my roots monthly so we're talking £1.60 a go. Twice a year or so I will do the entire head again so about £3.20 for that. My hair is in much better condition than it ever was.

toadgirl · 20/07/2016 10:16

^^I mean to say the roots AREN'T obvious when they come in with the henna.

I am 35 and have been getting greys for the past 7 years or so. They are mostly in badger stripe type location on my temples, which means when I put my hair up in a ponytail (which was all the time, with a toddler around) they show a lot... but really, I don't have that many yet on the rest of my head, so all over dyeing is kind of overkill. So in the end I got it cut short enough that tying it up is not an option. I used to get it cut short but then never got round to going back so it would grow out and hey presto grey ponytail. The only reason it's worked this time is that I've finally found a good hairdresser that I like going to, and I make my next appointment as I'm leaving the previous one. So far so good. When they start encroaching on my parting I'll reconsider highlights or dyeing. That bayalage thingy looks lovely though!! It wouldn't work for where my greys are really, though.

AnaisWatterson · 20/07/2016 13:50

How come they come through entirely grey. You don't get grey at the top but brown bottom unless it's dyed.

SexNamesRFab · 20/07/2016 23:32

Middle - currently using 8.3 shade by L'Oreal excellence (sorry can't remember the name). It's lovely and Lannister when I first but but as the weeks go by I do start to look new and more Targ Wink .

Shopper99 · 21/07/2016 06:50

I'm mid 30s and probably 80% grey with "naturally" mid-brown hair. I dye my hair every 4 weeks and am so bored of doing so but my roots are soooooo white I can't not. I have no idea how I'll ever grow it out tbh.

For those of you who have embraced the grey - how grey are you? And do you think it ages you? I remember seeing someone from the back assuming they were in their 50s maybe, they turned around and they must've been mid 20s but the grey ages them soooooo much so looked much much older.

Such a pain in the arse.

VertiginousOust · 21/07/2016 07:35

shopper, I'm probably around 40 % grey and early 40s and I think I've got quite a lot for my age. I have an illness that can cause prematurely grey hair though. I honestly think dyed hair/roots showing is far more aging than just grey. I was inspired to grow mine out by knowing a couple of women who were almost completely grey by early 40s but who looked amazing.

Middleoftheroad · 21/07/2016 07:52

Thanks Sex may look out for that today. Yes I would like to be a Cersei blonde I think though not the funny colour of the short wig she's been wearing.

Im another advocate of the powder cover up on roots. Spray is quite harsh and sticky but root touch up good esp the one from Boots where you can blend both colours.

WiltingTulip · 21/07/2016 08:03

I'm 39, didn't realize how grey I was until I cut my hair really short. When my hair grows out from the chemo I'm thinking I'll leave the grey (if it still is) and see what happens.

Previously, like other posters, my grey was a yuck colour- not at all what I hoped for (my dad is beautiful pure white). Is there a reason why sone people have such nice grey colors??

Roussette · 21/07/2016 09:13

Wilting I wish I knew. My SIL has just come out and gone grey. Straightaway she is a beautiful pearly grey, fabulous. I have a masculine salt and pepper badger colour and really can't.
