The Statement necklace

Is it all a bit 90s?

I'm despairing a bit at loads of middle aged female politicians ( across all parties) who - imo- ruin a good look with a huge necklace, which wears them. I'm sure they think it' 'lifts' the outfit, but it's become a cliche.

Isn't less is more when it comes to bling and smart suits?

Chockers are nineties.
Statement necklaces are last year.

I think Dower and Hall have some nice necklaces.
I think there is a confusion over chokers here. I don't remember them in the 90s but then the 90s were a fashion wilderness for me as too busy bringing up DCs! I do remember them from the late 60s and 70s; there are a lot of vintage shops online advertising 'chokers from the 60s'.

Chokers were definitely a thing in the mid 90s. I used to make my own out of interesting strips of material. Probably still got them all in a box somewhere.

I love a statement necklace, but I save the really big ones for the evening.

This is the sort of choker I remember from the 90s. I mostly wore pendants on long cords back then though, iirc it was all vaguely hippyish things, ying yams, Suns, moons, stars, crystals, spirals and so on.

I'm sure stament necklaces came in in the 2000s. I've never been able to get on board with them, they just seem to overpower every outfit they're out with.

Ah yes, Diane in the GW is one of the few women I think makes that look work. But her whole outfits are always immaculate.

Oh dear, absolutely, I didn't know that rouge noir was a blast from the past; I must be behind the times, as I was just settling down to apply some when I read this thread.
I'll just think of it as a timeless classic.

You are all too young! :)

This is what I'm thinking of when I say chokers- image of young hippie woman with velvet choker with gold heart on it.

Chokers were 70s.

My Girls World had one.

PollyPerky · 13/07/2016 09:55

I think there must have been a choker revival in the 90s if that's what some posters remember. If you look at 60s wedding pics, lots of brides wore chokers made from velvet etc.

Elspeth you have described my teenage years perfectly! Grin

APotterWithAHappyAtmosphere · 13/07/2016 10:07

Yep 90s were my teenage years and we wore velvet chokers with tiny charms in the early (grungey) 90s and then the swirly plastic tattoo type in the mid-late (ravey) 90s. I would have said statement necklaces were more 00s, when minimalism started to pall. I would put them alongside feature walls - people still like them, but they're not a thing.

JaceLancs · 13/07/2016 10:08

I wore leather chokers with beads or charms on in the 70s
I can't do any kind of statement necklaces due to allergies - the only costume jewellery I can wear is a brooch
Although I like a bit of bling it has to be real I vary between pearls, diamond or opal pendant depending on my mood
I used to like unusual earrings but now very rarely wear anything other than a discreet pearl or diamond stud

MadameDePompom · 13/07/2016 12:45

Oh I loved a velvet choker or two in the nineties. Until I realised they only look good on those with a swan like neck. Sadly my neck is more duck like.
