My brother is getting married in August. His fiancées heritage is Asian and she will be wearing Indian wedding dresses. Ours is not Asian and my brother will be wearing a smart lounge suit

There's a whole series of events - so I need more than one outfit!

  1. Religious ceremony at brides parents home followed by lunch at a restaurant. Brother has said wear something smart/casual. Bride has said "afternoon summer smart" with shoulders covered and need a scarf to cover head for ceremony
  1. Mehndi party again at brides parents house evening before wedding. Women only. No dress code given but apparently traditional to wear bright colours
  1. Civil ceremony followed by reception at stately home type place

Have bought 4 dresses but not sure suitable. Plus at my size (22) feel not v comfortable in a dress. Will try to link pictures

(Also do you think my dh should wear a suit to 1 (above) or chinos/shirt/blazer

Help!

I prefer the strioy number from the two above. The orange one is more reminiscent of an elderly lady on a cruise with way too much make-up, too much gin and a meddling witness to a hand bag snatching crime...

I don't know what your budget is:

Savannah Print Maxi Dress Similar to the one Kate M wore in India, maybe for the mehndi, £79

Talia Dress Great for event with bright colours, £119

Acacia Dress Indian dresses have a lot of embroidery on them, so this might suit - but not sure about the colour, £139

One Shoulder Maxi Dress I like this one because the top half looks very similar to a sari, £95

Green One Piece Sari This is made to measure and has the advatahge of being one piece so is very easy for someone who's never worn a sari before, £350

Asos have over 200 dress in their Wedding Guest range

Hiya popping on to give the thumbs up to the stripy dress. I think it might work well for either the religious ceremony or for the mehndi party as I think smart day dress would work really well for both and fill the brief. For the religious ceremony it ticks the box for covering the shoulders and you could add a neutral or bright scarf for your head - a pashmina usually works well for this. Also if you need to sit on floor during the ceremony the midi and flared skirt will make things easier for you.

SheHasAWildHeart · 20/07/2016 17:51

The stripey dress for your brothers wedding? Pretty sure the brides family will be dressed up in Indian bright heavily embroidered outfits; I don't think you need to go as bright as them but there's nothing about gnat outfit that says "sister of the groom" - even for the religious ceremonies (and I say that as someone who has attended many indian weddings).

thinkfast · 20/07/2016 20:20

So many mixed views.....someone at work told me the stripey one looks like a prison uniform

It's only half an Indian wedding...

Have decided to wear the stripey one to the religious ceremony/lunch as I think it meets the brief of smart summer afternoon

Will keep looking for the main event and keep the orange as a fall back....

Sadly I've gained so much weight monsoon dresses (my usual go to shop for dresses) don't fit me at the moment.. Watching what I eat but don't hold much hope. Wonder if I could get one and get it taken out a bit maybe...

Is it worth ordering another one of the green dresses? It sounded like it was just right for the main event.

Pantsalive · 21/07/2016 10:47

How about this one if you like green?

MiddleClassProblem · 21/07/2016 10:50

Monsoon is good for a bit of an Indian feel and do plus size

Pantsalive · 21/07/2016 10:55

Have you looked at Chi Chi Curve or on ASOS?

What was the verdict on either of your blue ones?

Pantsalive · 21/07/2016 11:07

This peacock blue maxi is very pretty and an absolute bargain at £69 reduced from £249!

SheHasAWildHeart · 21/07/2016 11:49

Those Chi Chi Churve dresses are gorgeous!

SheHasAWildHeart · 21/07/2016 11:56

Something like this for the mehndi? Simple, modern, comfortable and a bargain at £29.50!

FelixFelix · 21/07/2016 14:05

I'd avoid the Chi Chi dresses. They look very cheap in the flesh and not like I expected at all!

Twinklestar2 · 22/07/2016 10:11

What about Virgos Lounge? They do fusion really well.

Oh2beatsea · 22/07/2016 12:42

Hi have you looked at Boden in the clearance? I never buy full price but have bought some amazing dresses at a fraction in the sales. They do a size 22 and are often generous. I hope you find what you need - I understand your dilemma!!

Oh2beatsea · 22/07/2016 12:48

This green lace dress is in Boden clearance. Size 22 Long for £44.
Not sure if it's what you are looking for.

The sari stands out in a sea of ultra-modern wear, and that factor alone is enough to give us the courage to put on a saree. With practice comes comfort, ease and the confidence you had envisioned that comes along with it.

Pinkcadillac · 17/04/2021 22:18

I wouldn't normally choose this colour but I like this dress www.asos.com/asos-curve/asos-design-curve-blouson-embroidered-midi-dress-with-cape-back/prd/14735077?colourwayid=16639954&cid=9577
