Does anyone know what makes hair static?

My hair is very static when i brush it and can hear crackle sounds, why??
I wash condition and apply a light oil to the ends so I know it's looked after! Could it be the brush?? Had it a while maybe I need a new one?!

Is it a plastic or nylon brush? That will do it.

You can get natural bristles, ceramic or wooden brushes. Although the ceramic ones only have a ceramic barrel

I've been using a plastic Denman one for years, the one that smells of strawberries and has strawberries printed on...then last week I bought the Denman one with natural bristles and now my hair just flies up as soon as I brush my hair!! So in my case natural bristles are bad

Cold,dry,weather and synthetic fabrics are notorious for causing static. Plastic hairbrushes make it worse. In the winter when I get undressed,I pull my jumper (acrylic wool,man-made) over my head and sparks literally jump off me. Ow!

It's driving me crazy! I just want to brush my hair without it going crazy!
