I already have bought it and it is lovely but not sure if I should be more floor length?

iseennodust I have some lovely gold shoes but they really kill my feet and we have a lot of walking to do.... I do agree though I could look for some non-black shoes.

Oh god I have some perfect shoes that the heel fell off and I was meaning to re-heel them - I need to find those shoes!

No, not for a formal occasion

LaConnerie · 27/06/2016 16:51

I'm sorry but I really don't like it. It's definitely not the right look for a formal dinner IMO...

LaConnerie · 27/06/2016 16:55

What about this ?

orangeistheonlyfruit · 27/06/2016 17:20

LaConnerie I as unsure when seeing the url link the dreaded monsoon but that is a gorgeous dress! :)

Ha ha I know what you mean Smile

I keep hovering over the 'add to basket' button myself, shame I've got no formal do coming up... I do love it tho.

I think yes to the dress, but don't like the shoes or the necklace. The danger is that it becomes too goth, so I think it needs more delicate shoes.

How about silver shoes and either a silver, sparkly cuff or dangly silver earrings?
Or pale grey suede shoes plus silver cuff or earrings as above?

WeekendAway · 27/06/2016 19:41

I think the dress is lovely but needs a chunky statement necklace with it. And those boots on bare legs look stupid.

WeekendAway · 27/06/2016 19:43

Oh hang on, is it a black tie thing? Full length would be better. And I still don't hugely like the shoes you've picked.

But then I am old so you should probably ignore me.

orangeistheonlyfruit · 27/06/2016 19:57

Well it is t a full length event as I've checked and the people coming can wear what they like it's only the grads who have been asked to wear gowns as there is a presentation etc.

Yes I don't want it to be goth remus I do have delicate shoes but with all the walking involved was not looking forward to wearing them. Maybe I need to insist on cabs.

Anyway dh is super late home with a flimsy excuse that I don't believe (he has previous for stretching the truth) so not sure I will be going to this thing after all as its his cousins graduation and I am going as a guest.

Anyway I saw a lovely delicate real white gold necklace the other day I may get that. It is a bit of a splurge but I will wear it loads. Have not got a cuff that isn't leather - maybe I am a secret goth lol.

Formal dinner calls for formal shoes. I think www.boden.co.uk/en-gb/womens-shoes-boots/heels/ar734-blk/womens-black_fresco-vienne-mid-heel these would do the trick.

Agree that it needs a seriously statement necklace. Something that drops well below the neckline of the dress and is heavy looking, gold or silver, no colours.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 27/06/2016 20:29

Voice of dissent here, saying a strongly voiced 'no' to a statement necklace!

orangeistheonlyfruit · 28/06/2016 11:23

So I am wearing the dress and it is stunning. Being silk it ripples when I walk and flows in the wind - really visually effective. Anyway, as most of you feared, the shoes do not look good. Buggers!

I am off at lunchtime to look for some.

And necklace wise there are a few dainty but large necklace type things in Cos so am going there to check them out.

You mentioned the graduates wearing gowns. I assume they mean academic gowns, not gown as in a floor length dress. I wasn't sure if that was why you thought they might be in floor length, whereas if they're in academic gowns, they'll probably wear something closer to business attire or a cocktail dress.

ISpeakJive · 28/06/2016 14:57

Right, I think the dress is lovely but you need the following:
(From top, down)
A really glam hairdo
Beautiful earrings (doesn't have to be expensive)
NO necklace
A beautiful bracelet
A clutch bag
Strapped sandals ( nothing closed)

You will look beautiful.
