High end make up that is actually worth the money?

I'm having a no-spend Summer and saving up my Boots points, so I'm planning to get some nice make-up in the Autumn. I will be in the market for lipstick, lipgloss, powder and maybe foundation.

I have some MAC lipsticks (which are mid-range rather than high-end I know) and while the colour range is great, I'm not wildly impressed with their lasting or hydrating power. Possible brands I'm looking at for the future are Chanel, YSL, NARS, Estee Lauder. For lip products I'm looking for decent lasting power, no bleeding or travelling, decent hydration or at least a non-drying formula. For foundation, I have dry and dehydrated skin so I'm looking for a glowy radiant finish which lasts well through the day.

High street make up products have really upped their game in the last few years. I have had great success with some high street products (Rimmel foundation, Revlon lipsticks, Sleek blushers for example) so I'm wondering if it is worth forking out for £25 lipsticks and £30 foundations at all.

All recommendations gratefully received

For high end brands you can actually spend your boots points on;
Estée Lauder pure colour envy lipstick Chanel vitalumiere/ ysl touché eclat foundation
Lancôme mascara

Lotta I've tried the bourjois healthy mix stuff, having reading it was a Chanel dupe. IMO it's nothing like Chanel. I can't see what the comparison is. They're not the same at all.

Chanel are usually good for samples. Unless you get a super snooty sales assistant. Who clearly considers she owns the whole flipping beauty counter. And giving a sample would bankrupt her. Or something. I'm a repeat buyer, just gimme a sample fgs!!

Well you weren't expecting that little rantGrin

Ok thanks John, I will put my assertive face on and ask for samples of Les Beiges and Vitalumiere Aqua!

Ysl touché eclat primer is the best imo and I have tried loads for foundation I use Dior star foundation again I have tried loads but this is my favourite. I always use Clinique loose powder too. Shame hourglass isn't sold in boots because their ambient powders are fab

JimmyGreavesMoustache · 17/06/2016 08:12

bobbi brown foundation for me, and the odd clinique lipstick - pretty much all of the rest from superdrug. and I know it's very 90s and most people have moved on, but nothing makes me looks less tired than good old touche eclat.

i think a lot of what makes a brand worth buying is if the colour palette suits you, and for some reason almost all the clinique lipsticks seem to work for me, when other brand make me look like a clown.

There can't be many foundations I haven't tried but am loving the latest No 7 one. I had tried two others last year, got colour matched etc and they made me look sick. This one on the other hand is my absolute favourite. Just like my own skin but better. I will be buying again which is rare. Can't remember the name but is in a black rectangular tube

The best lipstick I've found has been a Topshop one. Better for me than MAC, Chanel, Dolce and Gabbana, Rimmel, MUA, or anything else. Perfect shade of red, too. (Hazard, if anyone wants to know).

I love Chanel Rouge Allure lipstick number 34 for its colour and I get through about 2 a year as I wear it for going out, but although I love the clout it doesn't last long at all. I like Revlon for lipsticks, I think they last very well and have a lovely finish.
Estée Lauder foundation but everything else drugstore. I've used high end mascaras (Dior and EL) but find them really no better than L'oreal. I recently bought Benefit hoola bronzer - what a rip off! Goes on really patchy and definitely not worth the money.

I tried the Chanel Vitalumiere aqua foundation and it somehow managed to give me a wrinkle that I'd never had before! My favourite foundation is Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturiser, although the tube is crap for travelling with as it seems to leak whatever I do.

Something that I would definitely repurchase is By Terry Touche Veloutee concealer. Hideously expensive, but I think it beats even Touche Eclat for its skin perfecting qualities.

YSL Touche Eclat Foundation
Lancome mascara
Lancome lipstick
Chanel tinted lip gloss

All staples of mine and all highly recommended.

The only high end beauty product I would stick to is perfume.

Everything else can be high or low or anything in between.

DameXanaduBramble · 17/06/2016 15:51

I use Chanel vitalumiere, but if foundations disappear quickly on you then I'd try another. The Bourjois healthy mix is, imo, , a fantastic dupe for the Chanel one, they are made in the same place. I find them to be really really similar. Texture, wear, everything.

andadietcoke · 17/06/2016 16:10

I do love the Charlotte Tilbury KISSING tree lipsticks.

Foundation I use Les Beiges and then build up colour with bronzer and blusher.

Another vote for the YSL blur primer - I don't normally get on well with silicone based primers but that one works well for me.
