I want to start wearing skirts - need help

When I wear a skirt I either look very mumsy or like complete trailor trash.

I want to start wearing skirts but how? I never see any I like, I have pretty good legs so would like to show them off a bit before it's too late...

help please.

pencil skirt?

MascaraOHara · 19/01/2007 13:56

I'm too 'hippy' not hiipy as in 'far out' hippy as in the size of my hips and bum. High waists also make me look like a duck.

short A-line, not too full, with opaque tights and boots?
Keeping it on or above the knee can help avoid mumsiness (I look awful in anything between right on knee and real ankle length)

My favourite ones are cord ones from Gap.

now is a good time of year to start...

I wear healed boots.

What sort of tops?

fitted tops
stretchy shirts
wrap cardi style tops
(nothing voluminous!)

oh you sound like me - I am quite hippy but I hate wearing trousers as I just look huge. I have good legs too and I think a good A-line skirt just above the knee looks nice with long boots. I also wearwrap tops or wrap dresses as this draws away from teh size of my hips.

Per Una have been doing some really nice long skirts that do not look either mumsie or trashy. The trashy thing is anything short or really tight - avoid this as not good for the big of bum anyway. Mumsie just avoid floral prints or go for a funky bright seventies print if that's your thing.

Don't go to next - their stuff is cut wrong if you have large hips and small waist. French connection stuff is good and gap.

Good luck.

a nice burgandy or grey colour would be nice then, or a choclate brown. With the body type you describe a-line would be best and that is not mumsy - or my standard fall back - a nice denim skirt with a bit of lyrca- esp. if you go for a dark denim you can dress it up or down.

I do think cross over tops look really nice, I have a nice array of necklaces and v-necks / cross over tops and the bottom half of me is usually understated a- line denim.

MamaG · 19/01/2007 17:29

oh yes, GAP cord skirt, opaque tights, boots and wrap top/cardi

v nice

If you have a sainsburys with a clothes section near you have a look there. I got an A-line denim skirt which is quite low in the waist and finishes just a bit below the knee and it looks great with boots and a fitted top.

jeangenie · 19/01/2007 20:21

low-waisted denim a-line skirts a winner every time for me (large hips and proud of them!)

brimfull · 19/01/2007 20:23

I really like this skirt.

((whispers to ggirl 'email sent'))

(((thanks dimple,you're a star!)))

The Boden knee length moleskin skirts are lovely with black opaques, boots and a fitted jumper.

I second Marks & Sparks actually, lots of nice bias-cut or A-line skirts. Go for stretchy, long-enough tops but ask an assistant to confirm the size is right for you.
Surely you can wear prints on your bottom half MO'H? And when you say you look like a duck, does that mean your bum sticks out backwards? Cos that's what they're supposed to do, I would kill for a proper girly bum - mine is wide but not pinchable.
