How to get blusher right?

I just can't seem to get blusher right. I have very sallow yellowy skin with dark circles under my eyes so I can look washed out & ill with no colour in my cheeks.

When I do apply it though I often can't see it in the mirror so I put a but more on. Then I go to the loo at work & look like I've been tangoed or sunburnt in the mirrors there! Back in the car mirror on way home can't see any colour again, back to looking washed out.
How is the best way to apply it so it's enough but not too much?

Also anyone with a similar skin tone to me, what colour blusher do you use? I have mainly browns & peaches and I'm not even sure if they work for me.

Lastly what about bronzer or the all over powdersyou can buy eg benefit hoola, dandelion etc? Should these be applied as well as blusher or instead of?

I am 41 by the way so I don't want to look too made up, I just want a healthy glow that stays on for more than 5 minutes and looks quite natural.

Loads of replies thanks! Yes I definitely need to try before I buy as i've got several blushers already that are half used, some not even half and then I think no it's not quite right.
I do my make up by my bedroom window so the lighting is pretty good and natural.

Any more suggestions for good pinks to try? Bobbi Brown is a bit out of my price range but for the right colour I could be persuaded. Would they mind if I asked them to try lots out on me? Don't really want to make any more expensive mistakes.

I'm sure you can try at any counter, I never buy straightaway without checking it in daylight first, so they will be understanding.

BTW, I've been looking at photos of Kate Middleton and she seems to have switched to pink blush and looks really good in it, much better than the earthy colours she was wearing earlier.

Ooh thanks Chardonnay will have a look at KM, I wonder what she uses.

These Max Factor ones are great.

I have found that the people on the counters are really good at choosing the right colour for you. I think at most I've tried on 3 different colours at a counter. I say I am looking for a natural looking blusher to brighten me up, they ask a couple of questions then they choose some for me to try.

If you have the budget, you could get one of those huge makeup sets designed for young teenagers that have a tiny amount of lots of different colours of everything. The quality tends to be poor and there isn't much in each pot but it is ideal to try every colour at home and see which works best for you. Then you take that pot down to Boots or wherever to find the closest colour match in a decent brand.

So should cream blush be set with powder or just left on it's own?

What did you get at the end,OP?

JohnCheese · 22/06/2016 11:53

Another one here that hates the Bourjois blushes. V poor quality IMO, and I like high street for blushes.

Bright pink is the way to go. Am fair but sallow and orangey browneY tones are hideous on me. Have a Bobbi brown one atm, v v pink in the pot but v flattering on.

And yy, Kate used to look, em, pardon me y'highness but there ain't no other word, dirty in those awful browns she used to wear.

Topshop cream blushers are actually really good. What makes a big difference is how you are applying them too. So you should first suck your cheeks in and draw a sort of number 3 on your face with the bronzer, with the middle point in the hollow of your sucked in cheek, then smile and apply the blusher to the fullest point of your cheek on the apple,

It really depends on your facial bone structure and personal coloring. If you have pronounced cheekbones, this tutorial could also work.
