Need an outfit for a wedding, plus size and struggling

NaraDeer · 08/06/2016 15:06

I'm the biggest I've ever been and I'm really struggling trying to find something nice for a wedding I'm going to next month.
I need to cover my arms to past my elbows and I really don't think I'd be comfortable with even my calves being on show now. I have small boobs and very big waist and stomach.
So basically, I have no redeeming features to show off and I need something that will look half decent whilst I hide my entire body but at the same time I want something that won't be too hot in the July weather.

Any suggestions or shall I just go hide away forever now? Sad

KP there isn't any undies out there that could make me look anything but a big tomato in that red one! Grin

The more I look at knee length the more I know I just can't face it. I'd be so self conscience.
What sort of a top would work with them sort of trousers and a blazer? I think that sort of thing would make me most comfortable.

Your on line are fast deal and free returns I've had no hassle with them ever

Hope you find something nice lovely

KP86 · 08/06/2016 17:22

The same kind of silky singlet top they've got in the picture (or with wider straps to wear with a bra). Skimming your body without billowing which will make you look bigger. If you intend to have a blazer on all day then singlet will keep you cooler anyway.

Add some chunky jewellery - necklace or earrings and bold make up (and lightly curled hair if you can pull it off) and you'll look gorgeous.

Curled hair will help hide the dye roots if you don't have time to fix before the big day.

This was the Phase Eight jumpsuit I bought - it looks rather dark in the picture, but it's a nice deep blue/navy, good quality fabric, hangs very well, was comfortable and flattering, solves the problem of exposed legs and looked good with bright accessories. I wore it with a silver torc and electric blue flats.

Ooh, I like the phase eight one as well! Choices, choices.

issynoho · 08/06/2016 17:37

I was going to say navy rather than black if you're pale (like, English rose pale?).

And try a few pinks - rose, dusty pinks or a raspberry red/pink are lovely on us pale types. You might be a spring or summer? Do you suit silver rather than gold?

Blue ALWAYS works, imho.

SesameSparkle · 08/06/2016 17:39

When I was a size 20 I used to scrub up ok in a maxi dress from monsoon and a little bolero over the top to cover my arms. My personal favourite would be the melinda dress with the saphira shrug in the blue or red. Size 20 is pretty common on the high street now so you should have plenty to choose from.

BluebellTheDonkey · 08/06/2016 17:42

Hi, you mentioned you have a red complexion, just thought I would mention that I have rosacea (red skin) and I wear Estee Lauder doublewear maximum cover camouflage makeup. I wear it every day and it really works to cover up my redness. Its £28 so not cheap, but you only need a little and then you just have to blend it really well. If you go to an Estee Lauder counter they will colour match you and show you how to apply.
Good luck OP! Hope you find something.

issynoho · 08/06/2016 17:43

Yes, maxi dress is a great idea for a wedding. Go for a straight up and down column fit rather than floaty, galleon in full sail affair.

And Phase Eight stuff is v nice quality and tends to hang well.

What are your best bits? How can you emphasise it/them?

DXBMermaid · 08/06/2016 17:56

I've ordered some dresses from Macy's in the US before. They have a great selection of plus sized clothes and they deliver to the UK.

These are just 3 random dresses that I picked out.

Have a look at beige just for ideas. And I know a lot of people deride Simplybe but under occasion wear there are things that might give you an idea. Look at evening wear as well as the rest.

I think jump suit great idea. I also like maxi dresses as long as not in pastels ie being bridesmaids..

Lucked · 08/06/2016 18:15

I like this asos one

SimplyNigella · 08/06/2016 18:17

Simply Be have some Coast dresses in plus sizes which would be great for a wedding, they also have some skirts and tops that give a bit more coverage.

KP86 · 08/06/2016 18:25

The one Lucked posted is gorgeous!

misspym · 08/06/2016 20:39

I second sesames recommendation. I am a size 18 and find Monsoon jersey maxi dresses very flattering. They are good quality jersey so hang well and don't give a voluminous look.

NaraDeer · 09/06/2016 18:41

Thank you for all the suggestions.

That ASOS one is far too beautiful! I love it but I really want something that is nice but not in any way would draw comments/attention.

Can I wear flats with a maxi? Will need to pop into Monsoon.

Bluebell I keep seeing people talk about Doublewear on Mrs Gloss but have seen bad things about it for dry skin. Either way I'll see if I can get a sample and try it. Would adore finding a nice foundation that thats the right colour and doesn't go flakey even more than a nice outfit!

I'm so crap at putting outfits together.
I'm still thinking trousers, palazzo ones and blazer right now. Would navy trousers be better than black? I own a white blazer, I was thinking that with a nice white top? Or would that look stupid?

Hedge that's lovely, I'll really need to try some stuff on to see if a jumpsuit would suit me.

issy sorry just saw you say about navy rather than black! Blush I would say English rose so much as ruddy farmer to be honest.
I think I suit silver more and rose gold is better than yellow gold on me.

I like this jumpsuit. They do a dress as well in the same fabric with 3/4 length sleeves, midi length.
They keep going in and out of stock (I have 2 of the dresses to send back as they were too big) so keep checking if you like it.

Laska5772 · 09/06/2016 19:10

I dont know what your budget is, but how about a Bombshell dress? ( very Nigella.. and they have a sale on right now)

Laska5772 · 09/06/2016 19:10

.. and goes up to your size .. I should have added .. I have one and its fab

FunkyChunk · 09/06/2016 19:13

I second Scarlett & Jo, lovely plus size stuff and you can see the clothes on women of all shapes rather than standard "models"

Pinkcadillac · 09/06/2016 21:20

This maxi could be fantastic or awful IMO, but worth trying:

HeartsofOak · 09/06/2016 21:38

I think you risk looking a bit farmer like in a green jumpsuit, could look like overalls. Grin

I think if you're large of top half a V neck is very flattering.

also a 3/4 fairly fitted dress will give you shape and a silhouette. Combine with wedge heels with a point at the end and people will only see a sliver of lower leg and the eye is drawn downwards to the pointed foot.

Go for a darker colour with a fairly small (not daisy type) pattern and combine with the lightest 3/4 cardigan you can find in the pattern's colour.

Hair (keep it down but curled?), makeup, good undies, spray tanned legs, matching shoes/bag and a nice hat, should sort it.

Pinkcadillac · 09/06/2016 22:12

This kimono is lovely and would work with a plain black jumpsuit to cover your arms:
shop.mango.com/GB/p0/plussize/clothing/jackets/jackets/sequined-embroidery-caftan/?id=73070174_04&n=1&s=prendas_violeta.chaquetas

This looks strange but I'd be tempted to try it on. You'd need a light fitted jacket of some sort:
