Haircut for thinning hair

I'm losing my hair at the moment. It's shoulder blade length with layers and a big side swept fringe. As my hair is falling out the part for the fringe is looking sparse, also the hair is really knotty.
So I'm thinking a messy bob. But I'm quite fat at the moment (size 20) and worried shorter hair will make me look fatter.
Any thoughts ?

I'm in a similar quandary. Mine has been thinning for a couple of years now Sad and what I do have left is dry, dull and flyaway.

I've been wanting something shorter and hoping a good hairdresser can work some magic with layers to make it look a bit thicker, but haven't been able to face going yet.

Pinterest is useful for finding ideas - I just do various searches for thin hair, fine hair, messy Bob and suchlike and have found lots that I like and that might be feasible.

Size wise I'm about a 12 but pear-shaped, so yeah I do worry about short hair (I've had it short before but was much slimmer), but frankly I look crap right now so may as well try something different!

Yes I'm feeling like I look dreadful anyway so worried a bad haircut would do me in.

Step away from the scissors. If what you really want is to be a stone lighter it's nothing to do with your hair

Invest in some good thickening shampoo and conditioner and some volumising spray. It helps.

I have had thinning hair and alopecia for the last 20 years. I currently have shoulder length hair, blunt cut with no layers. Over the years I have tried nearly every style going and a blunt cut bob or a bit longer will make it appear and feel thicker. Do Not under any circumstances get layers, all they do is make the hair look sparse , more flyaway and unmanageable. Trust me, I've had layers cut in several times and they have been a nightmare! The secret is to make the best of the hair you have and if I'm having a really bad hair day I put on a fab pair of earrings to detract attention and to lift my mood. Hope this helps , you can still feel beautiful with thin hair, accentuate your positives!

I have a short bob with long layers, fringe and side parting, which does a good job of making my thinning crown look ok.
These things also help: Nioxin system 4 shampoo and conditioner (or Elvive Fibrology when money is tight), VO5 Plump Me Up mousse, blow drying lotion and dry texturising spray, Babyliss Big Hair, and a wide stretchy headband for bad hair days.

Thank you all.

Sounds like I need a new hair but without the layers to make sure what I have is nice and healthy. I haven't dyed my hair in 6 years so what is still attached is actually really lovely and soft. I also really like my natural colour it's sort of highlighted.

I've tried thickening sprays before but it just ends up being really knotty.

Maybe it's worth re looking at it. I'm trying to keep my hair care/beauty stuff in the hippy range of things. Any suggestions?

I don't think we've got the cash for extensions at the moment but if things don't get better I might investigate. I'm hoping the higher dosage for my thyorid helps stop the thinning.

Extentions make it worse in the long term, my hair was really really thick until I had a sewen in weave Extentions, it was never the same again

I've got my hair cut very short, and well, at the back. The front, where it's thinest is swept forward and cut so that it stays like that with minimal effort.

I make sure it's cut well, it's not cheap and I've been happy with my hairdresser for the last two years.

It's also pale blonde and highlighted which gives the impression of depth and thickness.

Apart from shampoo and conditioner I don't put anything else on it except maybe hairspray.
It's possible to pay a fortune on miracle cures like special pills, lotions and shampoos but I've never found one and don't know anyone who has. A good cut and colour does it for me.
