Fitted shorter tops/t-shirts to wear with my skirts - where have they gone?

MimsyPimsy · 10/05/2016 15:44

Where can I buy tops/t-shirts to wear with my skirts?

I am looking for something: fitted/clinging rather than loose, about waist length (not crop tops, obviously, as I'm not a teenager), a variety of colours (eg navy, cream, pink etc), and with short or no sleeves or even long sleeves.

I've hunted high and low, but everything is baggy/long. I spent hours hunting on the internet last night, but came up with nothing. I don't care about fashion. Where am I going wrong???

Just seen you've linked to two more while I posted! Thank you.

The spotty one is actually quite long, as it's tucked into the trousers - the length is listed as quite short because the back is so low. The other one (with a vest underneath!) also looks too long.

I'm not normally so fussy, honestly! I think what I want just isn't there :)

What kind of skirts are you wearing them with? I'd have thought you could find something tgat suits you/the skirt without it necessarily being short? Didn't mean to imply you were heading down the muttonous route - sorry!

MimsyPimsy · 10/05/2016 21:05

I expect my skirts are totally out of fashion. I just wear things until they fall apart - I don't think that style and beauty is my natural home Grin

The particular skirts I want to get tops for are shaped like this:
www.asos.com/search/midi-prom-skirt-in-stripe?hrd=1&q=midi+prom+skirt+in+stripe
Although not stripes like this. The model wears them with a very cropped top!

Diddly - that's too long as well.

Actually, this is introducing me to new shops, so thank you all!

Can you wear a cami tucked in, with a cropped cardigan over?

MimsyPimsy · 10/05/2016 21:15

Yes, I could do, but I didn't really want to. I just wanted a t-shirt that's fitted and short, but not cropped. Grin I know, I'm too fussy. But previously, I've not had any problems getting one! And I'd get quite hot with a cardi.

Petite might be a better fit

Diddly - re making some, that picture's just what I want! The skirt is just like the shape of my skirt. You see, I said it was out of fashion - but my old skirts are so nice. That picture's it exactly.

But I don't have the skills/time to learn the skills etc though. So I guess I'll just wait til it comes back into fashion!

Yes, I can see now why you need short fitted tops. DD actually found a lovely evening skirt for her summer ball in that shape, but had to send it back because we couldn't find a fitted shortish top (boobs too big for cropped!)
Anyway, was just looking a River Island for something else, and they seemed to have a few there.

MimsyPimsy · 10/05/2016 21:42

Yes, I'll have a look at River Island, then relegate those skirts to the back of the wardrobe until shorter fitted tops come back into fashion... sigh...
Thank you everyone for looking.

Bhs have lots of colours, m&co have some, if you use eBay there are sellers selling new m&s t shirts in various colours.

John Lewis own collection had a few, white stuff have some as well.

ginorwine · 10/05/2016 23:10

My dd has a skirt like that and she wears a body with it .
She also got a fitted t shirt from new look .
Could a dressmaker make several for you - ? May be worth it for yiou ?
Kettle well and gap modern boat neck also worth a try also Matalan .

ImYourWomanJonSnow · 11/05/2016 10:32

Watching with interest.
I think I have checked every shop I could think of, and I haven't found anything (and was prepared to fork out good money for the right thing too). Lots of lovely things sitting in the wardrobe unworn because I can't find bloody tops to go with them. I know exactly what you're after OP, a straight top sitting between waist and hip, not too thin fabric. Why do they not exist?

Anything here?

I was looking for the same sort of top OP. I have a t-shirt left from 2005 that is the perfect length/fit. I found 1 t-shirt in the end in TK maxx. I have another freind who buys things from the kids section and buys age 16.

teacher1984 · 11/05/2016 21:53

Have a look on Next online kids - Im a size 8-10 and have had a couple of short tees from there (age 15).

I also have this in Olive - www.topshop.com/en/tsuk/product/clothing-427/tops-443/t-shirts-2290019/pretty-mesh-insert-tee-5339841?bi=0&ps=20

The white one I found to be a little see through though. Olive one is gorgeous.

Notfootball · 11/05/2016 22:11

I bought this in grey and white from Topshop. I'm 5'7 and 10/12 and they don't reach the top of my jeans.

Sonotkylie · 13/05/2016 13:17

I am going to try the Gap modern v neck tee in petite. I have the regular ones which are a decent fitted shape ie not too clingy and great with skirts if you can tuck or fold. So I am giving the petite a shot - will report back (unless they are brilliant in which case I will get my choice of colours and sizes first ...!)

teacher1984 · 13/05/2016 16:46

I have just bought the gap modern v and it's ok but still pretty long, although I am short. Worth a shot though

Sonotkylie · 18/05/2016 13:43

Gap modern v in petite (only available online as far as I can tell) is not bad. Definitely lost an inch or so in length compared to the regular one. On me its top of hip bone/ bottom of waistband type length (I am longish in body), which works with the skirts I want to wear. But it would be hem able rather than having to cut off loads, if you wanted it shorter. And its not as droopy as some. (and its cheap so will tide you over until the ones you really want come back to the shops in a year or so ...)

ImYourWomanJonSnow · 19/05/2016 10:32

OP how about this one? www.cosstores.com/gb/Women/Tops/Patterned_knit_top/46885-40892947.1#c-22755

2madboys · 19/05/2016 11:10

OP I've had a few of these over the years, which go really well with skirts Wallis

Millionprammiles · 19/05/2016 12:24

Have also been looking and its nigh on impossible (and am shorter so even petite are too long). I also don't want completely sleeveless (you might be able to find a few 'shell' tops that are shorter).

I think tops currently are designed to either be tucked into pencil skirts or worn long and loose over narrow fitting trousers.

I have a lovely structured top that's the right length to wear un-tucked, from House of Fraser (brand Poppy Luxe). It was the only non flowery/sparkly one in that brand though.
