does anyone wear a petticoat anymore?!

I've just bought two gorgeous Phase 8 dresses but feel hot just trying them on! Do I need to brave M&S underwear department for "a nice pettie" as my mother would say? Confused

Also - which are the cheapest most decent Spanx-type pants? Blush

No I'd only wear one if my dress was see - through. Why would an extra layer make you feel cooler?

ChipInTheSugar · 08/05/2016 10:04

It would be a cotton one - and the dresses are sweaty polyester/viscose Blush

I am not sure a petticoat will make you feel cooler. I have loads of Phase eight dresses and find them to be fairly well structured and easy to wear.

FutureGadgetsLab · 08/05/2016 10:05

I do but they make you feel warmer.

Instamum · 08/05/2016 10:06

I think you will feel hotter with spanx and a petticoat.

ASOS has a sale on it's spanx right now

TondelayaDellaVentamiglia · 08/05/2016 10:07

I recently bought one in primark, but it was in the sale, it's a very light spanx-ish thing, but just fabulous, for skimming over bra and pants and it doesn't ride up too badly at all

If they still were in stock i'd go buy a million!

I think any unlined dress is vastly improved by a full slip.
I also have a bra slip, but it doesn't fit that well atm too fat on the boobs but they can be worth looking at for minimal underwear lines.

Nettletheelf · 08/05/2016 10:37

I thought that the word 'petticoat' had been formally retired since 1972. We should all start using it again instead of 'slip' or 'underskirt'. Not that I've worn one of those since I was about 10.

Fairylea · 08/05/2016 10:40

Spanx and a petticoat will make you sweat buckets! Shock

Coolest way to wear a dress is with big granny style pants in pure cotton and nothing else ....!

OOAOML · 08/05/2016 10:42

I do - M&S have cotton ones and a range of other ones (polyester I think) including ones that they say are cooling. I think they make some clothes sit better, and also stop see through on thinner materials. I am a child of the 1970s, I wonder if petticoats/slips are a generational thing?

Frazzled2207 · 08/05/2016 10:44

I wear them under dresses, Make me feel cooler and comfier and dresses sit better Ime

Helenluvsrob · 08/05/2016 10:44

M&s do a range of " keep you cool" underskirts. They are nice and make dresses hang better

BaronessBomburst · 08/05/2016 10:45

I have several M&S full slips, in different lengths, in black and nude. I love them. They are very light and comfortable and give you a smooth line under jersey dresses.
An extra layer gives warmth in winter, and in summer I wear them as nighties.
They're reversible too. A v-neck one side, and a lace trimmed scooped neck the other.

OiWithThePoodlesAlready · 08/05/2016 10:48

Not a petticoat but I'm thinking of buying a slip as I have a few summer dresses that are slightly more see through than I'd like.

amarmai · 08/05/2016 12:23

love pettis- in winter they keep sweat off woollies and in summer they stop the sun shining thru. Plus if i am wearing a dress that is a tad short , i allow the right petti to hang down and give me an extra layered look inch or two. Especially love net pettis-so airy!

KingJoffreyLikesJaffaCakes · 08/05/2016 12:28

I work in a nursing home and very definitely saw one the other day while I was sorting out the washing.

One though. In several years. Hadn't seen one for a long time before that.

Maybe it was some kind of ancient relic?

Muskey · 08/05/2016 12:32

I wore a cotton one yesterday as my dress was see through. Being the wrong side of 50 I don't think anyone would have wanted to see what was on show.

DerelictMyBalls · 08/05/2016 12:33

I wear a full slip most days for work and a half slip sometimes with skirts that tend to be clingy at the hem.

M&S do cooling slips which are quite good.

DelphiniumBlue · 08/05/2016 12:37

I wear the M & S ones with jumper dresses, for anti- cling reasons.

NannawifeofBaldr · 08/05/2016 12:37

I'm with the Baroness full slips under jersey dresses in winter give a much nicer line.

Reading this thread takes me back to school and girls telling each other it was "raining in paris" if their slip was showing. Smile

Babymamamama · 08/05/2016 12:39

I'm obsessed with natural fibres for summer and usually only buy cotton clothes although strangely viscose doesnt bother me too much. I cannot stand polyester. To answer your question my mother wears petticoats. Dd is intrigued by this as she sees it as so unusual. I never would as I think it would just make me feel even hotter.

DerelictMyBalls · 08/05/2016 12:50

Round our way, the code word was "Charlie's dead"!

Papergirl1968 · 08/05/2016 12:54

Snowing in Paris, not raining, at least here in the Midlands!
My mom still wears petticoats!

PrincessHairyMclary · 08/05/2016 13:00

I have a slip from Debenhams, dresses fit so much better about £19 it's a satiny material so quite cooling

ChipInTheSugar · 08/05/2016 13:09

I thought Charlie's dead was for ankle flashing trousers?!
