Please help dress an overweight woman who can't wear heels for a wedding!

I was actually going to skip this wedding (which is in about three weeks in the first half of May) because I don't have anything to wear, having put on a lot of weight this year because of medication, making me weigh in at a horrifying 15 and a half stone at just under 5 ft 6. But that seems like a cop out. Can anyone suggest anything I can buy online, as I live in the sticks, work mostly from home at the moment, and can't easily get to a city to shop?

I generally like plain-ish clothes, and favour wrap dresses - and as this wedding partly takes place in a quite conservative synagogue (and partly in a very famous museum, which is why I want to go!), it needs to be covered up, preferably long-sleeved, or with some kind of shrug/jacket.

The other challenge is that I simply cannot wear heels of any kind. When I wear formal-ish clothes at the moment, they tend to be slouchy black/dark/neutral asymmetric dresses worn with heavy silver jewellery and flat knee boots, but that doesn't sound weddingish-at all....? Which is of course annoying, because DH will just be showing up in the dark formal suit he wears every day for work, so why can't I? Grrr/

Any suggestions would be greeted with major gratitude. I realise it's a challenge...

Was going to suggest Studio 8 as well. How about this jumpsuit (change the belt!)

With these flats

if you can wear synthetic material (I can't) these shoes would look great with most colours, especially navy, and are v. cheap:

Zaral

UpsiLondoes · 18/04/2016 22:10

Do you find most shoes sizes fit you correctly? I have some stunning flats from yoox that cost between £30-60 in sales but they have ton of drool worthy designer flats (search all shoes then use filter for flats) around the £100 mark. And bargains under that.

Not sure what you're after, but to go with a Cos dress you linked to...

Blue or black

geometric electric blue splurge

classic strappy black

sparkly bejewelled type same designer does sparkly handbags too

Pinkcadillac · 18/04/2016 22:12

correct link Zara

LadyB49 · 18/04/2016 22:18

Oh...I love that jumpsuit.

UpsiLondoes · 18/04/2016 22:36

Agh, 3rd time retyping so I'll summarise - Eileen Fisher! Like Oska but more formal in silk fabrics.

In Fenwicks, Harvey Nics and online

this dress with a powder blue jacket and scarf like one below (but maybe from tk maxx) - and it will look very Spring weddingy

myrtleWilson · 18/04/2016 22:59

The 'Helen' jumpsuit on studio eight may work too?

hollinhurst84 · 18/04/2016 23:06

Have you considered having something made? www.aliceandco.co.uk

Loads of great ideas so far!
Im not sure about wearing trousers to a synagogue wedding- best to check that before you buy.

ImNotChangingMyUsernameAgain · 19/04/2016 00:37

I think trousers is shul is for these days.

What about black trousers (good with your flats), a black camisole and done sort of beaded evening jacket.

ImNotChangingMyUsernameAgain · 19/04/2016 00:38

That should say trousers for shul (synagogue) is fine these days.

Just realised I left a web address and didn't say anything about it.

I've been having clothes made by Alice since the early 1990's. If you have the money, and do t really enjoy the while experience of shopping, perhaps because you have limited time or never find anything that 'sparks joy' have things made quickly becomes addictive. A chat, some discrete taking of measurements, a couple of fittings and the perfect outfit can be yours.

I started having suits made for work, having seen a couple of very unflattering shots of myself. Now, work is much less formal, but i still get some special pieces made, really well cut trousers, a jacket to go with them. I am on record saying that the confidence i get from wearing really good, well cut and fitting clothes is beyond anything. Overall, i know i spend less because i have some great pieces in my wardrobe, so i know i am ready to go, well, anywhere.

Hope you find what you are looking for.

Hope you find what you are looking for.

OP you sound like you have a great style already ..think loads stuff on that Oska site would be suitable..I cannot bear flowery shit either.

Shoes are the bugger though.. these are nice and come in blacktop
better than ballet flats which look shit imo

ggirl · 19/04/2016 09:29

these with peachy/taupe outfit?

they do look like they may be painful tho

ggirl · 19/04/2016 09:32

with this dress
this jacket

and your fabulous silver necklace

plantsitter · 19/04/2016 09:33

have a look here.

At a London wedding with incredibly wealthy people you need to feel comfortable and chic, not trussed up like a turkey, so something simple like the black dress would be lovely.

purplebaglady · 19/04/2016 09:46

I'm a similar size and height. Don't be put off, you will look fabulous.

Phase Eight dress with a pair of elegant low/ mid heels. They have clever cuts and there will be at least one dress in their shop that will make you look amazing.

If Phase Eight is too costly then Roman clothes shop do online as well as In store and are a less expensive copy version of above shop.

Remember people see confidence. Hair, makeup and simile Grin

CrookedTiara · 19/04/2016 09:55

Thanks so much, everyone. I still think it is like a pleasant version of having a team of crack surgeons taking on your treatment. Grin

Thanks to whoever confirmed I wouldn't be shown the door for showing up at a synagogue in trousers!

ggirl, would all that linen risk looking very creased, billowy and informal at a very urban, London-y, indoors, museum-y kind of wedding?

Finally, that site looks really interesting. I haven't time before this wedding, though, plus I'm losing weight rapidly, so not wanting to invest in a size I won't be for much longer.

And Eileen Fisher is another good suggestion. I really like that kind of uncluttered neutral, fling-it-on-who-gives-a-shit thing.

OK, I will almost certainly be going with a neutral dark/dark blue/grey dress or jumpsuit, so would be really grateful for suggestions for colourful/interesting light jackets to wear over it to make it look less funereal? Not a blazer type of thing, probably something collarless and loose-ish?

Also, some gorgeous flats suggestions, but I have very wide feet anyway, and can't wear ankle straps because of my ankle break, which can rule out quite a few of the interesting one - is the cool flat in a wide fitting a contradiction in terms???

Have a look on Navabi for jackets. this for example.

Gudrun Sjoden for mental interesting flat shoes?
