If you have a 32" waist, what size are you?

Currently losing weight and though my pounds and inches are falling, my dress size isn't! And it's a bit depressing.

These are skinnies that I've been wearing and have just ordered the same (again!) in 16 to be delivered tomorrow. Will let you know how they are when they arrive.

MrsLettuce · 18/04/2016 20:35

Oooh! Go you! Bet that was rather nerve wracking Flowers

NickNacks · 18/04/2016 21:24

Pathetically yes! I dithered all day about whether to get them and when they arrive I bet I still faff about avoiding trying them all. I think if they struggle to do up I'll just ben taken back to all those times I've kidded myself I wasn't putting weight on and just carried on forcing too tight clothes on Sad

I don't really know what's wrong with me, I really thought losing weight would feel better than this. I thought I'd be delighted to be ordering smaller clothes but I just feel grouchy.

MadSprocker · 19/04/2016 08:54

Do you think it's because you don't want to disappoint yourself, if they don't fit? Or have you put high expectations on the type of woman you will be once you have lost weight?

NickNacks · 19/04/2016 12:18

Definitely the worrying that they won't fit. It's humiliating pulling clothes on that are already a large size and them not doing up, not even close to doing up. I thought that fear and dread would go away. Starting at a size 20 I couldn't imagine ever being disappointed I'm not in a 16, but I am. It feels the same.

I needn't have worried. The 16's fit!!! They are snug due to larger than I'd like thighs but they are on and buttoned up comfortably. Like someone else said, I hope they will stretch with wash and wear. Smile

Yay well done OP great feeling isn't it (eyeing ip pre pregnancy wardrobe wistfully!)

NickNacks · 19/04/2016 19:58

I went a bit 'in for a penny, in for a pound' and bought a few other bits with my holiday in mind. Feeling encouraged by the jeans fitting I've just tried on the other stuff. I got some white cropped jeans, three t-shirts (white lace style, jade and coral) I can pull on when we go to lunch or something (these were size 14!), new sparkly black flip flops for the pool and a burnt orange dress. It all fits Shock

Excellent!

Fwiw there can be a huge difference between sizes. I bought some next jeans that fit fine, I tried on the next size down and couldn't get them past my knees. But getting down to 16 is great Smile

NickNacks · 19/04/2016 20:42

Thank you Smile

Blinking marvellous!

SunshineBee · 20/04/2016 14:41

Well done OP. I know exactly what you mean and it takes a while for your head to catch up with your body. I've lost 3st over the past 2 years and have gone from a size 20 to a 14 but I still pick up bigger sizes to try 'just in case' as I don't believe a 14 would ever fit me. I have a 32 inch waist and 42 inch hips, but I find it hard to get jeans which fit properly as they are usually either too tight on the hips/thighs or I have a massive gap around my waist Angry

DelphiniumBlue · 24/04/2016 16:24

Reading this thread has demonstrated how much sizing has changed.
I have a skirt from Etam, very old but label says "size 16: 28 inch waist." Size 12 always used to be 24" waist.
For jeans, I think 32" is still a 14 - but jeans were historically based on mens sizing.
Although as a teenager I remember thinking men in a 32" jean were fat! Most people I knew were a 28".
Not wanting to make anyone feel bad, fwiw, my waist hasn't seen a 28 or 32 for that matter, for a long time!

StillAwakeAndItIsLate · 25/04/2016 12:22

Completely agree, Delphinium.

I remember that when I was 18 I grew out of a fitted skirt from DP. It was a size 12. My measurements at the time were 33-23-35. I was those measurements until I was late 20s and got a car! More than that, those measurements would be about a size 0 today.

I'm now 40-32-42 (quite pleased I've retained my proportions, if not my measurements!!) and I'm now a 12-14 generally.

It makes me laugh when people start talking about Marilyn Monroe as being a 16. A 1950's 16 is a horse of a very different colour to a current 16!

NickNacks · 25/04/2016 13:49

Yes I'm aware I am still overweight and have a way to go, especially by 'old sizing' standards but I just wanted a bit of real life comparison and an incentive of decent fitting jeans to carry on my weight loss journey.

OP posts:
StilAwakeAndItIsLate · 25/04/2016 17:19

Well it sounds like you and I are quite similar (certainly waist/hips size wise).

I'm 5'3 so I probably look bigger than you because I'm a bit shorter.

I believe I can do it, so I believe you can too!! And don't forget, there are many ways of being 'womanly'. Some women are supposed to have curvy hips/thighs and a smaller waist. And whilst I could stand to lose a fair bit off my waist/hips, I'm concentrating on rocking the curves until I get there. Wink

KelzOus · 06/11/2020 14:33

Oly4 · 06/11/2020 20:21

I’m 32-32-42 and a size 12

yaboo · 11/11/2020 00:54

40-32-40 here (lazy part 1 lockdown), and am wearing 12's, or 14's. Am five eight.

BusterGonad · 11/11/2020 02:30

I always presumed a 32 was a 14 and a 30 a size 12. When I was a size 12 I'd go for 30 waist 34 leg (in Gap a uk 10) and now I'm between a 14 and 16 I can be a 32 or bigger.

Gwenhwyfar · 12/11/2020 18:52

I was going to comment on this thread, but realised I did so in 2016. Seems to have been revived by someone who wants to talk about keto...
I wonder what size OP is now.
