Can anyone recommend me something to get rid of winter flaky skin?

On my legs, mostly, especially the shins.

I get this every winter and towards the end it's at its worst - dry, flaking skin. Yuk.

I've tried body brushing, scrubs, oils and creams - nothing really makes any difference.

Anyone found anything that works?

It's like a snow globe in my bathroom when I disrobe Sad

I know what you mean, the couple of times I tried body brushing was like a blizzard.

Have you tried applying your body oil straight from the shower on wet skin? Though personally not the biggest fan of mineral oil, it does work best for this. It encapsulates the moisture and seals it in. It is a bit of an odd sensation both to apply and to settle in but works a treat.

Agree with botemp, and would also recommend a rich scrub, like Soap & Glory Flakeaway. It's very moisturising in itself, so maybe do that in the shower first. My legs get very scaly sometimes.

I second the Soap & Glory Flakeaway; I've found it's the best exfoliator out there for shins.

hudyerwheesht · 13/04/2016 13:00

Oooh thank you.

What's mineral oil though?

It's a byproduct of crude oil refinement, vaseline (petrolatum) is a more 'solid' form. Most baby oil is mineral oil with a hint of fragrance, sometimes it's written as paraffinum liquidum in the ingredients label.

botemp · 13/04/2016 13:12

Should add that for a more 'natural' preference cottonseed oil works very similar to mineral oil. The Naif Soothing Baby Oil has that in abundance and personally I'm a big fan of & other stories' Cotton Care Madapollam Body Scrub also with cottonseed oil and it leaves my skin addictingly soft.

I've been using the Garnier body lotion in the red bottle for extra dry skin. Caroline hirons recommended as a budget buy and she's right, it's amazing and cheap as chips.

Cream with urea in it. Not a fan of euricin myself as it is greasy but flexitol do one for legs usually stocked next to their footcare stuff in Boots. I also got a nice non greasy cream off amazon which i will try to find.

Lucked · 13/04/2016 13:26

udderly smooth

hudyerwheesht · 13/04/2016 13:51

Cream with urea? Who knew...

It would probably have to be something that I can buy in a shop, I'm very fussy about strong smelling products and need have a good sniff first to check!

Soap & Glory is in Boots, but it does have a strong smell. I'm pretty sure the lotion suzib recommended has fruit acids or some sort of AHAs in? That will be really good for exfoliating/smoothing in that case.

hudyerwheesht · 13/04/2016 14:08

I don't mind the scrub being strong smelling as it gets washed off but any lotion/oil will need to milder.
I'm that person in Boots that sniffs all the bottles. Blush

I had this last year and found that Clinique Sparkle exfoliator followed by Boots Protect and Perfect Body serum worked. About to start the routine again!

I'm that person too hudyer. My 5 year old DD tells me off. "Mummy! They are NOT testers!" Grin

Good shower oil/cream onto those exfoliating mitts. Aveeno shower oil smells a bit rank but is fab.
Give em a good scrub them moisturise whilst skin is damp. I use aveeno cream (no smell!) as my skin is sensitive and dry.
Taking off my black jeans resulted in manky snow shower effect too til I started this a few weeks back.

For the benefit of anyone reading this who also suffers from "lizard legs" as one Boots reviewer put it, the soap & glory stuff is good and Boots have smaller, trial sized tubs which is what I bought and used earlier.

Thanks for the replies. Looking forward to legs that can come out in public.
